Portal next week - Good news

He had some dawgs he coached up at Illinois too, one of them was a high draft pick two years ago if I'm not mistaken

EDIT: it was Devon Witherspoon who was drafted 5th.
Yep my Eagles took him in the 2nd or 3rd round last year. Can’t remember his name right now but he plays periodically. Injured last season.

D$ has said the defense needs a head coach type

That's the only way.

I will say, on offense, he seems to have found a happy medium with Dawson. In year 2 Dawson seemed to have complete control but I also think Mario had input where he's valuable and Dawson seemed OK with that. Hope he comes back and gets a QB he likes.

It's a **** shame we only had Cam for 1 year because in the universe where Cam comes back I think it provides the momentum to get over the hump. I think that's why so many fans feel so disappointed. I don't think it's the 10-2 season, it's the idea that we likely have to start all over. If we had Cam for another year we'd be talking about refinement and fans are excited.

Don’t disagree with you but at the same time we’ve seen Mario make a splash with Cam in the portal. If we get to spring in March and we are in the same position, we can have the discussion about the excitement level for next season.

Gotta believe Mario has some big things planned for the portal in the coming weeks.

You never know when you bring in a qb or any other player in the portal. That’s why you spend on the closest to a sure thing as you can find. Even then there’s some questions. Just look at Cam Ward. Some considered him a turnover machine that’s shown to have decision making issues and had a losing record his last year.

That said our returning OL will make a lot of guys look better than previous stops. Having all day to pass seems to have that affect.
I want to see the young talent Mario recruited play. I'm just tired of the insanity of taking players from for the portal because of the lack iof experience, only to have our talented recruited players not gain game experience, then rinse and repeat the next year for the same reasons.

I think too many portal transfers are bad for team chemistry. Add a few key players from the portal who are superior to what's on the roster at positions of need.

It's time for Mario to put his trust in the players he recruited.

I think LB , OL , rb and DL are some of those areas the youth need to play. We have to start developing better. But we still need 10 or so guys in portal

I don't know why CIS gets so excited about the transfer portal? Most of the players have been overhyped, underperformed, and took away snaps from players who are more talented, but less expenenced.

Yes, Ward and Martinez have been great, but a majority of the 15 transfers have not. I'm not getting excited over a bunch of JAGS!!!. We have better talent that's been sitting.

Not using the portal is foolish in today’s football. You should take 6-8 guys yearly no matter how well you recruit. Guys get hurt , you miss on high school kids, depth pieces , guys leave early , and guys leave for the portal. It’s like saying only depend on your draft and not using free agency. There’s a balance that you need to work with. 70-75 percent HS and the rest portal. I do think we need to develop some of our younger guys now especially in the front 7.

not an attack on you but we could have rebuilt the entire secondary with the portal last year - easily
and we'd be sitting in the cfp with a bye right now polishing our acc champ trophy...
but we chose not to do that.

I've had it with portal. Show me 10 portal transfers in any of the last 3 sesons that made a difference. Most have underperformed. We shouldn't be taking more than 3-4 players.

I'm tired of the revolving door culture. A team full of mercenaries is not a team. Just a bunch of individuals.

Why are fans so quick to write off our own recruits just for some JAG who has experience? Unless the transfers are All-Connference players at positios of desparate need, I don't want them.

.Mario has recruited talent. It's time for the talent to play. We need corner help to join Frederique and Bown, safety help with Patterson, and a QB only if he has superior talent that's it. Role with the returning starters and young talent at other position groups.

Just because we took a number of the wrong guys in the portal means we should abandon it. We should evaluate better.

Look at the top teams in college football. They take 4-5 players tops. Even if we take 7-8, that would be close to half of what we've been doing.

Before the 2024 season. Canesport did a breakdown of the transfer players in Mario’s previous 2 seasons. It was abysmal. Very few panned out for the Canes.

If they can't get all conference players who can be difference makers, then they shouldn't bother. We had 4-5 good transfers out of 15 for the 2024 season. I think we would have been better served getting younger players vital game experience at several positions.

I'm more on the Dabo side of things. I don’t think a majority of the transfer players are any better than what's already on the roster. I understand the first couple of years with the roster overhaul, but after two top 10 recruiting classes, it's time for the recruited talent to shine.

D$ has said the defense needs a head coach type for the defense. Somebody that’ll have control and respect over that room. I believe that’s what we’ll end up with somewhere on staff. The little noise that I’ve heard leads me to think he’s looking for a high level p4 type’s. Maybe even former head coaches. Hopefully he gets somebody like that to bite. I will say to his credit he normally fixes his mistakes pretty quickly even though he seems to be fixing a lot every offseason lol. Regardless the room should look dramatically different.
We are already a rehab facility for coaches may as well make it DCs that tripped up as HCs

We don't need to take 15 guys from the portal. We have two top 10 and now 4 top 20 recruiting classes to draw from.

I also believe too many portal players affect team chemistry and culture.

Some of the transfers that were getting big NIL needed to be benched. I feel like it's becoming like thr NFL where free agents who are paid a lot of money, play regardless of performance.

The lack of playing time may cost us talented players out of those classes who should have played more when the older players weren’t cutting it. We still need to use the Portal. We just need better player evals for who we take out of the Portal.

What I found on 24/7. I’m tired of looking for more.

Oregon had 15 portal players.
Georgia had 10 portal players.
Boise State had 8
aSU had 30
Texas had 12

What are you ******* drunk?

(No judgements)
Check the facts on the portal transfers. We took 15 last cycle. Only 4-5 performed at or above expectations. The previous 2 years were even worse.

Go to YouTube and search for CanesSport's transfer evaluations. Gsry abd Matt did an excellent job breaking down the transfers from the previous years during Fall camp 2024..
