The English prof's job is to motivate his students to learn his subject, not to shill for unions. Somehow this guy's non-sequitur statement has me thinkng that if the football players ate too many beans at the training table and got gas it would be justification to bring in a union.:t5diA6fawIHW78.jpg:

Today's society does not allow truth anymore. It's all about politically correct BS. If you don't think what he said is true then you are blind and I feel sorry for you. People need to quit looking for reasons to be mad. If it weren't true he wouldn't have said it.

You are an alien from the planet Voltar III, if it weren't true I wouldn't have said it. Oh, I'm sorry does certitude only apply to English teachers? :mmkay:

As a professor in English, Peter Schmitt should understand the importance of context and proper citations. Since he provides neither, he should also understand why his words mean nothing.

If Schmitt wants to provide some meaningful insight, by all means, go right ahead, but he shouldn't just blindly throw mud at anyone. That's something a professor at a top 50 university should understand.

Shame on the publication as well for allowing a potshot to be printed without any sources or documentation whatsoever.

Edit: Apparently the quote is from a practice video which I can't watch right now. Either way, context should be provided if they want to allow this guy to voice his opinion on the matter.

It was in this interview of day 2 practices -

I have to say when he said it, I kind of had to think about what I had just heard but printing it in the paper is another matter. That being said, it was when he was asked about the delay due to weather so I think it was more of a sense of 'delays to practice' instead of the word 'distraction'. Its hard to know especially since its hard to hear questions and you dont really know what they were talking about before the camera started rolling.

"There's always some kind of distraction whether it's class or, you know, the media...".

Al didn't mean that "classes themselves" were distractions. He meant that the classroom "could become" a distraction if players aren't doing what they need to do.

This Professor took his quote way out of context.

This is the truth. His job is the football coach, and classes right now ARE a distraction for the kids. It's one every coach has to deal with, and they all feel the same way. They want the kids to do well in their classes, but they also want them to perform on the field. On the field, you know, where they actually earn their scholarship. They didn't get scholarships in chemistry, but in football.

So sure, the quote LOOKS bad, but it's not. It's just the truth being blown out of proportion. Had he said, "Classes are a distraction that my players have no business attending", there would be a story. Until then, big deal.

Awesome "news" reporting.

it was a letter to the editor....and of course the Miami Herald ran it

What is the context that he is referring to?

Ariz - Get this Schmitt guy on the phone.

Rather him provide "The Work"

Something. Anything. Must be in D$'s doghouse while Nash, Tito and Glory get it done.

I don't think so. He lumped classes, the media and guys getting injured together as distractions. It's hard to defend Al in this case.
