There's probably 60,000 guys out there coaching football on all levels that could lead us to a bowl victory next season.

We sure know how to ****** pick em.

What if I'm somewhere between the the last 2? I've about had it with him, and I have more than serious doubts, and he's usually a corch to me, but I'm not fully in the last category? I picked the 3rd....but I'm not really in the 3rd or 4th.

I think al projects a good image as a front man, and he has the potential to contend with a couple smart fire/hire scenarios. I don't think he will do that though.

Al has a track record of success turning around bad programs.
Dude has cajones to go to Temple when he could have safely waited out a better gig like Shannon did here and all he did was turn them in to a bowl team in 4 years.
Now he's successfively dealt with another coaching sh!it storm by guiding the program for 3 years while dealing with the pending NCAA sanctions guiding the team to consecutive winning seasons all the while doing it with a ****ty as roster that he inherited.

All in on Al.

I'm sorry, but you said Al has a track record of turning around bad PROGRAMS. As in plural.

Please take the time for the rest of us to provide us with a list.

And while you're working over that long list, how many games has he beaten with winning records?

He took a UVA defense that was ranked 100+ and got them top 20 in 4 years.
Took winless Temple teams and got them to 9 wins in 4 years.
Took a Miami program that averaged 7 wins the last 5 years to 9 wins his 3rd year.

Actually he's averaged 7.33 wins and thats with bowl bans in 2 of his 3 years.
And since the basis for comparison is a 5 year average you may want to wait 2 more years for the measure to be comparable.

No doubt the defense has been lackluster, mainly due to shoddy talent and depth, but given Golden's stout track record of turning things around we should expect him to do the same with the defense.

Expect isn't the word I'd use after what we've seen these past couple years since Golden and D'Onofrio's defensive philosophy has been a far cry from the aggressive, attacking, fly to the football style we've grown accustomed to seeing as Canes fans.

Refusing to make much clamored-for changes to the staff could be interpreted by some as placing an emphasis on continuity. But continually rattling off tired excuses and citing select statistics in your end of the year presser to fit your politician-like, trending upwards narrative following multiple years of utter ineptitude on the defensive side of the ball makes it seem more like burying your head in the sand to protect a coordinator whom you're placing before the betterment of the program.

If the offseason insinuation about playing more Cover 1 and being more aggressive now that we have improved personnel in the front seven isn't just lip service, then perhaps some degree of optimism would be warranted in regards to finally displaying a willingness to change their identity to better fit the current personnel and caliber of athletes at their disposal in their recruiting base of South Florida.

But I'm personally not giving them the benefit of the doubt or blindly expecting dramatic improvement until I see changes made to our defensive identity.

Skeptical based on his track record at Miami.

quite the misnomer that is prevalent amongst folks of this board is that Golden is somehow rigid with his defense even though it's changed to varying degrees every year he's been here. Even look at the bowl game, looked vastly different then they had played all year.
So I'm not sure where the cries of "stubborness" is coming from. Ignorance maybe?

As for the wealth of South FL talent at disposal, problem has been HE HASN'T HAD IT ON THE ROSTER THE LAST COUPLE OF SEASONS.
You can best be sure that you won't be seeing kids like GAINES, GREEN, HIGHSMITH, RODGERS, Cornelius on his 2 deep anytime soon because he is in fact replacing these kids with the SFL studs and from across the nation that he's been bringing to CG.

I think Al Golden was the perfect fit for a head coach of Miami for the last three years given the NCAA mess, however now that we are largely through that mess I think he is a poor fit as our talent pool thrives on simple, aggressive schemes and not the conservative ideologies that Golden believes in. It is also important to note that it was year 4 when Temple made its biggest jump under Golden so this upcoming year will be really revealing.
