Penn Live Article: Golden Turned Down

Hey, if you take time to read the comments at the bottom looks like Penn State fans think a lot of our coach and not so much of the latest AD and administration.

I just Don't understand why we are still talking about this. Al Golden has moved on, PSU has moved on for whatever the reasons. Now let us move on and stop posting about this sh#$%t its getting annoying and a complete waste of time.

Clearly he hasn't if it his agent took a phone call from PSU on Thursday.

If im wrong please point it out and I will gladly accept it.....but golden appeared to be extremely careful with his words since Sunday's statement. I dont recall ever hearing him or seeing him say he is staying or anything like that. I can recall im saying things like 'we are excited' 'i am not a candidate for another job' and 'looking forward to our guys coming back' etc. I dont remember seeing him say anything concrete like "I am here and i am staying and we are building something"...in the past he's been a lot more passionate. The fact that people on this board have said that the usual contact with alums/boosters practiced by the athletic department has been abnormally quiet this week says something.

Golden's demeanor this entire week has looked like a guy harboring some guilt and struggling with a decision. I think he is a good hearted guy and where someone like saban or petrino can take the approach of saying one thing and doing something else the next day, Golden isnt wired that way. He couldnt bring himself to come right out and say I AM STAYING because in his heart he knew if penn state offered he would probably accept. By carefully choosing his words he would beable to say 'i never lied'. Its worth pointing out that the same things he has been criticized for on this board, not being a true ceo, not having the cut throat attitude, etc...is the same thing that basically allowed everyone to read him like a book this past week.

There have been sources and rumors and all this other trash for the last week, but i this were a poker game golden would have been playing with his cards on the table, face up. Any recruits we have/had that were even close to being on the fence have had people in their ears all week pointing out that this guy wants out why should you want to go there? Heck, its pretty simple and it makes sense. The guys that are committed to 'The U' will be here no matter what, but until NSD we are gonna be sweating out every single verbal.

Golden has always closed strong but this year I think the only way he can really close strong is by keeping what he has...selling himself this year is going to be 10x harder than selling anything when we had the ncaa mess hanging over us. Once this year starts, for better or worse, he is going to be here for at least another 3 yrs (probably the minimum frnklin will be at penn st) and then we will get to do this all over. Lets just hope he can stock us with top classes for 2015, 2016, and 2017 before someone else comes in to hopefully lead us to a NC.

Who really cares who turned who down? The damage is done and it's Golden's doing. Whether or not you think "it was only natural, his alma mater, a huge raise", who really gives a ****. The program looks like it's in disarray and we're losing recruits over this charade. It's Golden's fault and his alone, no matter how you justify it.

I dont think you are totally wrong, but I think it can be indicative of several different things. To be honest, I would EXPECT AG to be a bit anguished over whatever decision was reached. IF he left, I honestly think he would have had some mixed feelings. And by staying, if in fact he turned it down, or bowed out, I think it probably is something that is still weighing on this mind. I mean this was his DREAM job. And probably would have DOUBLED his salary. I have no doubt that it was probably the toughest decision of the man's life. I think its natural that he's probably mentally and emotionally drained from that process, and the way the season ended. I mean its not like the guy has had much of a break or rest.

I also think he's treating things delicately, becuase he doesnt want to suggest he was TOO interested in the job, because it would look like he wanted out of Miami, vs trying to portray that he "listened to PSU's offer" as a "courtesy".

That article doesn't make any sense.

Either way, Golden has one year (maybe two) to prove himself as a head coach. The CEO thing is nice, but ADs are hiring people that win football games. If this team continues to regress, then Golden will be lucky to have a job as a position coach at Arkansas in a few years.

i agree about him having mixed feelings if he left, i do believe he is happy here and his family is as well. you cant fault the guy for being interested but i think we can all agree he dealt with it rather poorly. that old saying 'you made your bed, now lay in it" is spot on in this case IMO. i think he was dealing with the diffculty of hurting UM vs 'betraying' his alma mater but...now he was left at the altar and UM is going to payfor it this yr for sure. i hope like **** he closes strong but i wonder how he will do with so much negativity shining down on HIM. before he was defending the school and did a pretty **** good job of it...now he has to defend himself and any attorney who defends himself has a fool for a client...unfortunately he has no choice.

his only hope is that we somehow stay top 15-20 for this class, SOMEHOW improve next yr...and 2015 should yield a great class.

But, but Canes4Life and the golden slurpers said he turned them down. How could this be true? And that Golden was going to spin it so it could benefit him in recruiting.

No your right dude. My apologies. IF the PSU version of Gary Ferman posted it, then it must be so. He was turned down just yesterday, but said he was not a candidate more than 4 days before that. I mean if AG HAD turned down PSU, its not like some PSU homer blogger would try to spin it the other way around right?

Like I have said all along, NONE OF US has a clue what went down. But Schools dont usually fly down and meet with an HC FIRST, only to leave them hanging for a week without an answer. This could have played out any number of ways, up to and including PSU asking Golden what his timeline was, and him saying "I need an answer by Sunday night, or Im pulling out".

And I dont blame him. Again, everyone on this board new PSU was the ONE place that he would likely bolt to, or at least seriousy consider if it ever opened up. I just find it funny how suddenly everyone seemed SHOCKED that he would meet with them and hear their offer once it did open up. Many HCs will listen to offers from other programs. Art Briles was reported to have almost been BEGGING for the UT job, and it wasnt until days later, that he issued his "Im staying at Baylor" statement, and that was right around the time Strong was hired.

But of course, its just Al Golden. The Antichrist. The only coach who has ever considered a huge raise. LOL.

Are you related to zone3cane?

I think Al was asking for more money, and a better deal. That's why his agent, reportedly was answering the PSU calls on Thursday. If PSU turned him down, they wouldn't be wasting their time calling him. The way I see it, Golden is buying himself more time by keeping d'NOfrio around. If we $#it the bed next season, it will be the end of No'D. Well that just give Ol' Al more time to "get the ship righted". He will buy himself two more years with that move....watch!

for anyone that believes it went down like that article would imply i have a bridge to sell you. golden knew this thing would take forever and withdrew his own name last sunday.

Well, at least him campaigning for and then being rejected by Ped State has helped our recruiting class tremendously. As a few astute guys predicted, Gulden made a triumphant hero's return to campus, and it actually benefitted the class greatly.

This is over. I have moved on from this debacle. Let's root for the team and hope for the best.

We need more charismatic leadership like this on the board. This man said it's over, and, I'll tell ya, I feel like it's over now. I think I was just waiting for someone to make that bold proclamation.

Let's get this thing going, Al! We love you and are glad you're here!

You're really sounding like a broken record at this point, all the B&M'ing isn't going to change reality. Honestly what's the point?

I've been following CFB for a very long time and I've never seen someone f$%k something up the way Al did with this situation. The closest things I can think of were the situations with Elliot Spitzer in NY and Senator Weiner from NY and both of those guys had to resign. IMO, Al will not feel enough pressure from anyone to resign and he clearly doesn't possess the integrity to resign of his own volition. Assuming that I am correct, I just don't see the point in banging that drum continually.

As far as loving Al, and being glad that he's here, that couldn't be farther from the truth. Al is a fraud. He can't coach and he apparently doesn't recruit very well in South Florida. He wanted out of Dodge because the walls are closing in on him and everyone can see that he not only gets his *** kicked on the field, he gets his *** kicked off the field on the recruiting trail. As you know, no one was rooting harder for him to get that Ped State gig than I was because it was our best opportunity to rid ourselves of him. Now it appears that the decision makers at Ped State were smart enough to realize that he isn't a very good coach and it looks like we are stuck with him. Am I going to root against the kids on the team? F&%k no. Am I going to root against the school? Same answer. Realistically, this thing will work itself out because if he's as bad a coach as he's looked over the past three years, then he will continue losing and he will be gone, or, if he was a victim of players who weren't up to par and he replaces them with players who can contribute, then he will win and it will build.
