Our OL room is FILTHY

Alot of the max protecting was to protect our tackles imo, both were newly starters there so i understood it even tho it ended up hurting us in the pass game. You saw in the unc and Louisville game especially when we had less protection tvd got hit alot more.

Lee and cohen are bigger losses than people think imo..Rivers and francis are better run blockers than they are pass blockers, but 2nd year at tackle under mario and mirabal they should improve in pass pro

Our top 10 rating depends on if carpenter and whoever is the LG are really good. I need to see it first

It also had a lot to do with TVD having cement legs and then being hurt on top of that, imo. I think you’ll see a lot less of that this year because Dawson should trust Cam to be able to elude a free rusher. I actually think you’ll see WAY less max protect this season. We have a QB who benefits way more from receivers running around in a secondary vs having all day to throw.
I agree the injury was part of the problem but his lack of running ability should have never been the reason for max protecting so often. One thing that TVD did at an elite level was punishing defenses for bringing pressure. He was a much better passer against the blitz. Teams literally found the cheat code to stopping him by not bringing pressure and just dropping everyone into zone. Once that started happening Dawson should have completely scrapped the max protect looks and just tried to overload zones.

There was a stretch where Van Dyke was obviously hurt and you could see he couldn’t make any throws so I’m not totally faulting the play calling there. I think they were just scared of throwing Emory out there until they had no other choice. But **** how many times did we see plays with Tyler standing in the pocket forever, with no pressure and nobody to throw it to because we were playing 3 on 7?

Yeah and then he threw a pick from a completely clean pocket. Last year was maddening in so many games.

Honestly that’s got to be the most important run blocking statistic. Everything else is dependent on running back ability.

I believe we were third in the country in that stat last year
Agree.
Imagine what we could do with more explosive RB's.

Until proven on the field this is by far a weaker line than last year. I could care less about PFF rankings.
You make a blanket statement with no context.

This 2024 OL is yet to play. So, your statements are premature at best.

3 of 5 starters are returning. All 3 will be better in 2024, especially Mauigoa.

Cohen was good, but he wasn't even all-conference. Whoever wins that LG job, should be as solid as Cohen. The only real question is C.

To say the 2024 OL is, "by far weaker", is FALSE. You are also discounting the underclassmen that didn't play last year who will provide depth in 2024. If anything, as a whole, the 2024 OL will be stronger than 2023 with more depth.

Wtf does that first one even mean? People just be pulling stats out their ***.
It's called math. If you haven't paid attention in school to it, no point in paying attention to it now.

All you have to know is it's (Expected Points Added) the most reliable metric out there.

Great post. People really can't grasp that it's a virtual certainty that the 3 returning starters we have will improve. So it's not the same line but replacing Lee and Cohen. It's a better LT than we had last year. It's a better RG than we had last year. It's, very likely, a MUCH better RT than we had last year (assuming Mauigoa stays here).

So yes, is Carpenter going to be as good as Lee? That's TBD. It's certainly a pretty good chance that he is. And, IMO, absolute worst-case is he's a slight step down? It's not like we're losing Jason Kelce and replacing him with a freshman. Lee was very good, but he wasn't Brett Romberg, and the kid we have coming in has plenty of evidence of being a good player in a very good league.

So really, the only thing that can possibly make this a "far weaker" line is if the LG position is just a complete sieve. I'm going to remain optimistic that 2 of the best OL coaches in the country can find one kid out of all this beef (pause) to be at least OK in that spot.

So, there's a somewhat decent chance the line is even better. There's a pretty decent chance it's just as good. There's a very small chance it's slightly worse. There is no chance it's far worse. I award the dude you responded to no points, and may God have mercy on his soul.
Spot on both posts. Rivers moving to LT was a big move and now he’s had a lot of time to hone and work on things. He can certainly improve in the run game. Mauigoa obviously dude is just some other level freak of nature. Cooper etc

Only thing from last year to this year is somehow the absurd luck we had with injuries. If this group all managed to stay healthy all year and be together I could certainly see them being better than last years group despite how much I like Lee and Cohen.

Another key connection here between the OL ranking, RB room ranking and WR room ranking…

Each one is the best room in the ACC. Now add Cam Ward, and to a lesser extent, Arroyo/Williams/Lofton.

There is zero excuse to ever put up less than 30 points this year. 35 a game is more than doable, I expect it.

Get to the ACC Championship or pitchforks are coming out.

Yeah our TE room healthy is vastly underrated IMO. Understandable they aren’t on any of these lists given injuries and the usage last season but in my eyes it’s near or top of the ACC at least as well.
