Next year could be ugly

***** brissett, he turned us down when he knew they wanted driskel to be the heir apparent. he is an idiot.

I see us going about 6-6 next year. Still no defense and breaking in a new QB. ****, we could and probably should have lost to UF, Wake and UNC this year. Pitt played awful and we only beat them by 10. Hope I am wrong, but this year did not show me any signs of us improving at all.

totally serious, until we improve on defense I will feel that way. I think we allowed 30 points per game in ACC play this year. When I see improvements in personnel and coaching on defense side of the ball I will feel this way. We gave up almost 50 to Duke.

Go take a look at my "real stats" thread. We give up 40 PPG in ACC play, 211 rushing pg, 270 passing pg, 481 total yards. AGAIN-- in ACC PLAY.

I don't necessarily agree with 6-6, but I can see an 8-4 give or take 1. New OL line up, new QB, more patchwork DL. Absence of Perryman. And the real "X" factor is if Donofrio is still employed. I

We gave up almost 50 last year to Duke but we won. This is why your post lacks any reasonable conclusion. Our defense is basically the same through ACC play as last year, the difference is our offense. Our offense has regressed but the actual result (ACC W/L was the exact same).

2013: 262 Points Allowed or 32.75 PPG
2012: 252 Points Allowed or 31.75 PPG

2013: 215 Points Scored or 26.875 PPG
2012: 263 Points Scored or 32.875 PPG

2013: GT, UNC, WF, FSU, VT, Duke, Pitt and UVA
Our Record: 5-3
SOS (i.e. our opponent’s W/L): 55-41 (33-31)

2012: BC, GT, NC St, UNC, FSU, VT, UVA and Duke
Our Record: 5-3
SOS: 50-48 (31-33)

If we keep the defense as is, we're not going to simply regress to a 6-6 overall record. Our crappy defense produced the same result over the last 2 years (5-3 to 5-3). It makes no sense and there is no indication that we would regress to 6-6 if we keep everything else in place. If we keep the defense as is we probably will go about 5-3 every year in the ACC and depending on our OOC schedule, we will hit 8-9 wins.

What you see this year is what you get from this team with everything in place. If you tweak the talent, if you tweak the offense, but leave the coaching...this is likely how we will finish. I don't see it possible to go 6-6.

I think what you will get from this team is a bunch of 9 win seasons from this crew with no changes to the coaches. I don't see any reason to hit 6-6.

How did you get 40PPG in ACC play in 2013?

My number is 262 total points or 32.75 PPG.

thing is although a lot of people aren't high on 17, he at least could throw the ball some and put up a lot of points. . We will have a qb who will be unproven at all from either a throwing perspective or managing game. Hope I am wrong, but 6-6 will not surprise me 1 bit. who do we play out of conference next year?

Our offense regressed over the last 2 years, in fact here are the results over the last three years.

2013: 215 Points Scored or 26.875 PPG [Morris]
2012: 263 Points Scored or 32.875 PPG [Morris]
2011: 219 Points Scored or 27.375 PPG [Harris]

In 2012 we started an unknown and he lead an offense that put up almost 33 PPG. He did better in 2012 (as an unknown) and our offense scored 6 points less per game. This unproven QB stuff doesn't mean 6-6.

An unknown is just an unknown.

I was exaggerating the number. Felt like 40 the last 5 weeks and many teams did put up 40.

You would have to think the offense would regress a bit though...wouldnt you? I mean we brought in a new OC. We already knew Morris was hot and cold. His injury definitely altered his play as well. Also losing Duke Dorsett and Scott certainly changed the overall numbers. Im not worried about the offense next year. It will be season 2 under coley with "probably" a more consistent QB.

The defense actually got worse in Run defense in ACC play..

If you call that improvement...you are crazy! By "definition' the defense improved in Pass D and Total D but by only 40 yards in Pass D and 23 yards in total D. That is not improvement my friend.

Call what improvement, what did I call improvement? Just so you know, I am a points guy. The offense needs to score points, the defense needs to keep points of the board. I don't care how they do it, I don't care if they stab to do it, just score more points and keep points off the board. While I don't love yards, I don't believe you can out yard someone to get the Win.

As for the offense, I expected the new OC to have some effect on the offense but not enough to regress that much. I thought a SR QB and OL we had would make up for some of the difference. Sure the Duke injury was huge and possibly it was not his impact on the offense that was missed but his return game (i.e. against VT) on kickoffs could have made some difference.

As for the effect on Duke/Dorsett (both injured against FSU):

When Duke was in the offense, we scored the following:

GT: 38 (remember 7 was on the Gunter Pick-6)
UNC (1st Quarter): 20 (Gunter FG block TD)
WF: 24
FSU: 14

Compelling Stat: 10 Turnovers

Points Averaged with Duke: 96 Points or 24.0 PPG

When Duke was NOT in the offense, we scored the following:

VT: 24
Duke: 23 (7 was on a Coley Return)
UVA: 41
Pitt: 31 (7 on a Fumble Return TD and 7 on a Pick-6)

Compelling Stat: 5 Turnovers

Points Averaged without Duke: 119 Total Points 29.75 PPG

I think the real issue was the amount of turnovers. I too am not worried about the offense next year. I think we will improve during ACC play.

I understand your thinking as to why we would not have a 6-6, but let me throw this out there--- We played teams that were worse this year. GT, UNC, VT, Va and they still carved us up. From the statistics point of view, we only improved defensively by 40 yards on pass defense and 23 in total defense. So if we bring the same team back... which we basically are (besides DP) we will improve another handful of yards. All the teams we played in the ACC will be re-markedly better offensively that we play. GT broke in a new QB this year, Williams at UNC is a true dual threat that will kill us (also in fedoras 3rd year), Lambert at UVa already lit us up and id be shocked if he doesnt start next year over that hack Watford. Duke loses Connette and thats about it. FSU just reloads! Pitt will be breaking in a new QB, same as VT.

I love the breakdown. I agree with most. For me, being an ex college football player (defensive back), My issue is the defense. There were many variables as to why the Offense was not up to snuf, while returning all the players. Turnovers played role but so did having a new OC! There is reason why offensive playbooks are bigger then defensive playbooks.... there is more information to learn and digest. Every QB on the current roster will be on their second go-around in Coleys system. Id start to worry if we struggled to put 17 points. Even if Coley blows..we have the horses on offense to put up 20+. I am 100% confident we get better on offense next year.

If a Miami team can score 24 points...that is more then enough to win, but our defense cant stop a f@cking nose bleed.

I love the theory that other teams returning players will get much better with an extra year, however, ours will just stay the same and no one will improve in off season. makes sense.
we won't be 6-6. that's ridiculous. yeah, and if duke doesn't get hurt, we probably end up w/ 2 or even just one loss.

Its been 3 years and chickillo has gotten worse!!!!! We have regressed on defense! Explain how you think we improve drastically with basically the same lineup?? Wake the f@ck up, Duke doesnt play DEFENSE!!!

Derek said we should have lost to unc, wake, etc, etc,. yeah, and we could have beat va tech and duke.
stop w/ the drama. chickillo isn't worse in 3 years. that's idiotic. all these newbies and 1st year starters at other teams are gonna tear us up and our players will just be the same. no one will get better. sound right?
