Mel Kiper Talks Miami

If golden was to leave for the nfl who you want the next coach to be? Looking at the track record at miami i think they would make cristobal the #1 target. I say maybe a kirby smart at bama or charlie strong.

Al Golden said the reason he wanted to come to Miami was b/c there are no wholes in recruiting unlike at other programs.... he would go against his own thought process to choose to leave UM for another BCS program.

I also dont think he is going to the NFL any time soon as in the next 8-10 years.... for one he said he wants to be the 1st long term coach at UM and second UM is going to cash out any size check they have to if he wins big here w/o hesitation.

I don't know whether he wants to be an NFL HC, but he most certainly will be offered the chance very soon. And they'll throw a ton of loot at him. I hope he sees the grind of the NFL and prefers college ball, but I don't know. Always seems like guys bolt at least once to the NFL just to get paid and to take on the challenge. Then, even if it doesn't work out they move right back into a nice college gig.

What if he envisions himself as building his own legacy at UM like his mentor JoePa did at PedSt?

Just a thought...

golden's in laws just bought a house in south miami. he's here for a while.

His wife apparently loves South Florida and he has young kids that he's moved here and he won't want to uproot again anytime soon. He seems like a perfect college coach because he is an educator and a molder of character in young men. I don't see him as a babysitter of adults.

I think he's right where he belongs . . . and I suspect that knows it and is good with it. Maybe wishful thinking on my part, but that's how I'm seeing it.

Golden strikes me as the type who would not hesitate to take an NFL HC job. His goal right now is to re-establish the Miami brand and win a bunch of games. Once he does that he'll probably be in search of a new challenge. He's already viewed as the best in the biz at manufacturing wholesale culture change against heavy odds. All he's got to do now is win big and the sky is the limit for a guy like him.

Do you disagree?

I know one thing. No NFL team will be calling if we continue 7-5 seasons, so I pray he becomes an NFL target VERY soon.

Golden doesn't seem like an NFL guy to me. Can you imagine him on an NFL sideline with a white long sleeve shirt and tie? can't see it.

I respectfully disagree with you, brother. I think he has NFL written all over him. I don't think there's a chance in **** he bolts Miami for another college gig. But I do think he eventually leaves for the NFL.

I do as well, but not until he gets this thing going like a well oiled machine.

Good NFL Coaches last half a dozen years. Very good NFl coaches might make a decade.

Good College coaches have a job for life, and the money is very comparable. I for one don't think of Al, thus far is his career, as a standout strategical mind, which is fine in college. I think he could coach in the NFL but he isn't nearly ready in my opinion. He is young and might grow into it but I don't see it as of now.

Kirk Ferentz nods in agreement. I would not be surprised to see Al leave but only after he accomplishes rebuilding the U. And by rebuilding, that means winning an NC and/or competing for NC's on a regular basis, not once in a blue moon.

I'm not sure his 4 pillars are going to work in the NFL. Those guys have it and its about the X's and O's and getting players.
