Mario not defending Cam

I don't disagree with that, but as a recruit, I will not go play for a coach who is hanging me out to dry when it's very obvious that this discussion was had prior to the game. Mario let the entire media run with the idea that Cam pulled himself out selfishly when he felt like it. The kid didn't have to play at all, but spotted us 31 points along with the #1 offense in the country for the season. As a coach, I'm taking all the heat for my guy and everyone can know this was a pre planned decision. Even something as simple as, my guy had a shot at the record, and I'm going to give him every chance at it, because he's earned it and keep him healthy for the draft once he's got it.

Most people agree, either this was:
Scenario 1: Mario preplanned that it would be Ward for 1st half, Williams for 2nd half; or Mario preplanned that Ward would attain record and exit the game and Williams would take over; or Mario and Cam both came to an agreement for this arrangement.

Scenario 2: Mario called an audible and yanked Ward out of the game and played for 2025.

Scenario 3: Ward called an audible and took himself out of the game to secure a high draft pick.

Mario's post-game comments: "I think all meetings with players and decisions like that, we make them in private, and we keep them in private," Cristobal said. "So I'll prefer not to answer questions as it relates to that. I know he played his best while he was in there."

Why did he use the pronouns "We" instead of "I"? He would likely use "I" if it was solely his decision to make; but I am reading this as it was Cam who made the call. He probably didn't really want to play this game (don't blame him--Ahem, Guidry's stank *** defense!) and made a compromise with staff that he would play the first half and leave it up to everyone else to decide the outcome of the game. In reality, he did us a solid by exposing the awful QB room we have.

So this gets back to Cam, who in a technical sense a pro money-making athlete, making a decision. Assume for a moment that he (Ward) made the call to exit the game. At what point to we stop hanging the yoke around Coaches neck and make him carry the load of these athletes and their decisions? These are tough discussions and a generational change in the mindset and the way we view student-athletes. NIL has wrought havoc for many different reasons and this pleasant discussion is a byproduct of this era. We probably need to have an honest spectators' discussion on what constitutes an unpaid athlete on scholarship and a paid athlete making NFL salaries. I feel less sorry for college athletes today who get criticized. I have completely stopped using the moniker "kid" when addressing them. I just think that once you go from unpaid to paid, there is a certain weight you now have to carry with you and the protections and the benefit of doubt you get that former players have enjoyed is now lost.

mario should have spoke. and if cam can't handle the heat, then good luck on the giants where there will be more media heat than this over summer camp missed throws.
This is kind of where I am. Let Cam deal with some media heat, but as the HC, Mario should have defended his guy. This was about as good as the arguments they put out for the Heisman and playoffs. Just a sorry *** effort.

Mario thinking him being silent is show of strength and its only letting others create narrative and letting qb hang to dry as we dont do media anyways.

He had chance to shut down early and he let it bubble, no wonder the backdrop smacked him in head..
Yep. I said the same thing yesterday. It was plainly obvious what was going down

**** when I was watching the game it never even remotely crossed my mind that Cam “quit” or bailed or whatever. I’m like oh that’s makes sense

Little did I know the drama 😂

Mario coulda been like yep it was part of the plan next question

Giants won their game today, they fell from #1 to like #4 with opportunity to drop some more. Pats have #1 on lock so looking like purgatory Cleveland or Tenn at moment. Endorsement money gone just that quick.

This concept won't change until they finally admit these are no longer student-athletes and treat the entire thing as pro athletes. Even then, an NFL coach would defend his guy as long as they are on the same page. If Cam went off script, that's another story.

It's not the criticism I have a problem with. Head coach that doesn't defend his players is a bad look for recruits.
Did he though ? I cam pulled himself out and didn’t return on his own why should the cosch take that heat round ? At least the last drive to get in filed goal range . You didn’t see the Colorado kids doing that even when they was getting spanked

I'm hoping for Tennessee. Cleveland is where careers go to die.

If Cam went off script, then I agree, don't defend it. The whole thing just feels sloppy right now though.

Funny part is actually hearing the arguement like huh? You arent even a UM fan, lol. See post on these videos where creator is making a big deal and comments are like Im a UM fan, thanks cam for giving us 2 qtrs, defense sucks!

Even in pregame interview, right before kick off if you scared it will give Iowa freaking state advantage.

1000% was Cam decision

He wanted that record and then wanted to bounce, but he played through the half instead

Mario **** sure wanted Cam to play the entire game, he wasn’t pulling Cam just to play Emory
