Look to the Transfer Portal: Discussion thread

Ewers isn’t good. Texas had the best offensive weapons in the sec and a good to great line. Ewers just doesn’t move the needle for me. He’s living off that five star rating. Texas is dumping him after this year
I mean you can say he hasn’t lived up to his hype….but he’s a 3:1 TD:INT QB with 65% completion and 8000 career yards. We could do far worse lol

it honestly feels like UGA lost a step or two the last two years. however, im not sold UT will turn all this recruiting into wins.
I agree. Somehow my biggest concern moving forward in CFB is Oregon. Feels like Lanning is making the right plays in HS Recruiting and the Portal.

It’s a new era of moving fast on evals in the portal and being able to scheme and coach on Saturdays. The old formula of stacking talent through HS recruiting is dead. I was all about building through HS and still think there is an element to it but it became crystal clear in 23 that the game had changed
I’ve come around to transfer as a significant piece, if done correctly.

Whereas HS was super important before, now I think its deemphasized. Only take those that you feel STRONGLY will contribute in year 1 if not a premium positions like NT/OL and the high 4/5 star QB (those premium positions ideally would not have to come in and play asap). Most every other position you should have an expectation they will be on the field/performing in that first year. If not, cut bait.

The meat of the incoming talent would hopefully be those portals that have good tape as freshman and/or starting as a sophomore. We should tamper the **** out of these kids throughout the season once it becomes apparent they good. They would also bring at least 2 years to your program.

The other part of the team should come from one year mercenaries that are all about their business and need to ball out. These should supplement your roster where it has a one year gap to get you over the top.

I’ve seen enough of the portal trends that the talent available is only going to increase.

two things, I could see him leaving for NFL or SEC if he doesnt win a Natty at Oregon. I also think hes making a mistake rolling with Moore next year. if he doesnt win it this year, I dont see Moore as that guy. Lanning is a beast though.

Now I maybe getting ahead of myself because he hasn’t committed just yet but look at Lucas. A kid we missed on cause we got in the frey late but he showed out his freshman year and now we look to benefit from it. As you stated, HS will still be important just not the end all be all and it will have different layers to it. Finishing second on certain kids and staying in communication(yes I know this is gray area) will be one of those new layers.

You have to re recruit your current roster every single year to prevent them from leaving. Imagine if every player in the NFL was a free agent every year. Its completely illogical from a team building, roster management perspective.
Imagine Lamar Jackson being able to peace out and leave to go and play for the Steelers any time he **** wants.

I would say that in the current landscape Miami will need to have premium evaluations. The pecking order is evident and players wanting to return to Miami will be option A.

I think alot of our fans forget that most of our biggest portal addtions..came in the 2nd window of the portal after Spring ball was over. (Martinez, Barrow, Baron, etc). You guys gotta relax. You have to save some of the NIL money for the guys playing in the CFP who will portal out as soon as they get knocked out too. Im definitely not in panic mode. We get Lucas and/or Brantley and I give us a solid B- coming out of the first window.
That is correct and that was because we got Cam so late the 1st window was closed. That wasn't the plan last year or this year. This is just one of the faults of our HC. The spin has already been out. I sense no worry, Miami is ready to spend big with playoff teams, we are on these big guys still. Maybe it still works out. Reality is, we have signed 2 portal players with visits closing Sunday. With our holes, you can't spin that and I don't just bash our program. Their is no way to spin Guidry still being on the staff. Their just isn't. Atleast we haven't been fed, he isn't hurting us with aquiring talent.

The Portal as currently structured is a massive game changer. It allows teams with cash to compete with traditional powers (e.g., Texas Tech). It negates most of the “under-the-table” elaborate payment schemes that provided an unfair advantage to certain teams (e.g., all of the SEC teams using agents to pay kids). It puts less of a premium on high school recruiting and dilutes the relationship building strengths of great “recruiters” (e.g., Mario but that’s a story for another day).

I could go on but it’s a DIFFERENT game today.

According to Pate, UNC was the highest offer, Oklahoma likely the lowest. He says Belichick came after Mateer hard.

And there it is. Money matters. But recruiting and relationships still matter too, even in the NIL/portal era. ... So all you dorks saying Mario is suddenly a an Edsall because he "only knows how to recruit" can go **** off.

My alternative theory is you move slow on evals in the portal, because you have analysts evaluating guys on other teams the entire year and backchannel the **** out of them. Something Mario certainly can do.
