Josh Pate Speaking Facts on Miami's loss to GT (11/10)

Considering most of this website had us winning 7 or 8 games in total I'm genuinely amused by the Baker Acting I've seen.

Fanbase is basura.

You mean the non-FG attempt when Miami was down by 12 in the late 3rd quarter. They should have kicked it to make a two-score game stay a two-score game?

Also, Miami went for two only once, not twice.

Y'all gotta stop this ****. The calls were the right calls. We have the #1 offense in America and a poor defense. You're not winning games with field goals.
If the first have FG was made the second half FG would have made it a 6 point game. The late TD would have given us the lead. Its a cumulation of things. Not just one by itself.

Very fair characterization on the Miami-GT game and where we stand moving forward - Pate still thinks we win the ACC, but not good enough to compete/win for a national championship.

Pretty accurate. I hope we can win the acc. The defense has me very concerned though.

He’s generally fair. I’ve said before that anyone thinking we had a serious chance at winning a Natty this year was delusional. Winning the ACC, finally, and getting into the playoff was the goal.
Agreed.

We are good team. At times a very good team. Nonetheless we have glaring D weaknesses and if/when our offense struggles...
Then, things like GT happen.
We were due for a close game that we would lose. Hopefully this loss motivates everyone to step it up for the final run.

Btw, this team reminds me a little of the Dolphins under Marino in the late 80's. D is pretty good but heavy reliance on the QB play to win games.

Wake is bad enough that we can win a close one. Syracuse has me worried as heck. Thanksgiving weekend. Good offense. Will be either a shootout or we come out slow and they score a bunch

The good thing on Syracuse is McCord is a statue.

This would be the one game to just let the ends pin their ears back and go get him. If he scambles he isnt making it far. So no stunts or getting cute. Make McCord have to move a bit and he becomes an Int/poor decision machine.

You can't play the butterfly effect in football. He went for it on 4th and 3 in the first half. IMO it was aggressive, and correct. I'm not playing for field goals with the #1 offense in the country. With Cam Ward, I'm pressing the gas pedal down. Mario has been uber aggressive all year, and I commend him for it. I'm not going to play Monday Morning Quarterback on this one.

If we "win a close one" against Wake, then sell your ACC Championship tickets, if you have them. Because we're either not getting there, or we're getting pasted if we do.

We're not going to win a close one against Wake. We're going to score 45+ points and win by multiple scores.

Agree with the first part, the second part not so sure of anymore.

“Because Miami didn’t go take the game, they allowed the game and their opponent to take them…”

Outcoached. Outplayed. GT wanted it more.

Sad.

I said this all year. We not good enough talent wise to win it all when we run into a different type of roster that’s better. We going to get destroyed

Fair and logical, as usual from Josh.

He said one thing that I’ve really been shaking my head at the last 2 days too. It only took 28 to get us. I genuinely did not think that was in our range of outcomes. We’re killing the defense, and rightfully so. But we lost a game giving up 28 points. I thought if/when we lost, it’d take AT LEAST 35, if not 40. I just can’t believe we only scored 23.

More on this in the stat roll thread, but regression to the mean finally got us on 3rd and 4th down. We’d be comically great up until now. We finally had a down game, and it results in 23 points.

But that game really didn’t change a whole lot to me, once I got over the initial disappointment of hoping for a true miracle season and going undefeated into the playoff. It’s a good team, with flaws. Just like a lot of teams. We didn’t lose by 30. With Cam Ward, we’ll be in the game against anyone we play, imo. This one, we came up one possession short.

To your point. I think the 28 point actually falls on the Offense, specifically Cam. He is a God Send and couldn't be happier and/or grateful for having him. But when you have a game like this, where it doesn't seem to be clicking or going right, you have to take what the defense gives you. There were to many series that ended short because he didn't take advantage of that. On the 2nd and 7 or 9 yards, and the entire defense is dropping back into coverage, you have to be decisive and take the yards they are giving you without getting hurt or use your check downs.

I saw multiple series we didn't do that and we would end up 3rd and long, which resulted in hurry, sack, misthrow or receiver drop. Can't always have the mentality that you will always have another series. Wise man once told me, to throw a 70 yard touchdown doesn't mean you have to throw the ball 50 yards. Use the check down and see if one of our guys can break it. I think he will learn from this and adjust.

But either way this year has been great and has given me hope for the future. It's been fun to be the talk of College Football again and hoping we can carry the momentum moving forward. Close out the last two games and get to the ACCCG.

I keep seeing the internet talking about how our terrible defense let us down and I wonder if the internet even watched the game. Yeah, they sucked, but 28 was pretty good for them. And anybody who went into that game thinking 28 was enough to beat us was ******* nuts.

The internet wonders if you watched the game or of the you just watched the scoreboard?

this. the internet wonders if he noticed that GT only scored 28 bc they limited possessions and had 10 more min of TOP. they raped our D. if they could throw the ball, theyd likely put up 40+ (they were going to put up 35 but intentionally took a slide before the goal line to end the game). this was every bit as bad as the UNC manny game

Man...I'm not trying to be a mope but I think there is a serious conversation that needs to happen around Mario and the success this year. You have an entire side of the ball that has regressed this year beyond the point that he inherited it. The defense is worse than when he got here. And it's absolutely full of recruiting deficiencies and lack of player development. How do you explain that for a program that's supposed to be on an upward trajectory?

I get Mario got Cam Ward and he gets credit for that. But you can't ignore the reality that if he had missed on Cam Miami could be a .500 team right now, or worse.
