Josh Pate Speaking Facts on Miami's loss to GT (11/10)

Very true. Pathetic defense overall. We actually limited the explosives pretty well, we just couldn’t get them off the field at all. Pretty much exactly opposite of how the other games have gone.

Really though my point was, if you told me pregame that GT would have 28 points with a minute left in the game, id have bet anything we’d be winning. Still in shock we only scored 3 TDs on 10 possessions. We scored half our season average.
GT didnt allow us to get into any sort of rhythm. cam wasnt his best self that day but you can also credit that to tech. they were more physical and their blitzes were well timed. also, can we not sub in McCoy on passing downs. keep bell at LT and Rivers at G.

I get it though. this was a loss coming though. cam has to be heisman like every week for us to even win games and eventually he was going to have an off game. ****, if sam brown makes a catch in the middle of the field on third and Long its a diff story. but that stuff happens when youre so highly dependent on one unit. the defense needed to and should have smothered tech. they were never going to throw. we allowed them to run all over us.

I was praying GT would punt the ball on that last drive, I really thought they would come out of that 2 minute warning and go for it on 4th down.

A 5-4 team with nothing to lose, I was shocked they let our offense get another shot at it

Once they came out in punt formation, I really thought we had this game…

I was shocked too. All my people I talk to, I was saying he has to go for this, but also coaches are conservative by nature. Especially after Mario burned the timeout. They were one play away from essentially ending the game at that point. I think us having all 3 timeouts when he made the initial decision played into it because even if you do get it, the game still isn’t over. But I’m with you, I was pretty surprised he gave the ball back to Cam. But it worked.

I think teams have worked out that if you just frustrate Ward by playing 2 high safeties he eventually stalls the drives himself.

He / we don't have the patience to take the underneath stuff / lean on Fletcher / Martinez. That'll only get worse when you play teams that can legit take away Horton / George et al with one player.
This…

Too bad Mario isn’t “meddling” like he did last year and forcing Dawson to run the ball more.

Fair and logical, as usual from Josh.

He said one thing that I’ve really been shaking my head at the last 2 days too. It only took 28 to get us. I genuinely did not think that was in our range of outcomes. We’re killing the defense, and rightfully so. But we lost a game giving up 28 points. I thought if/when we lost, it’d take AT LEAST 35, if not 40. I just can’t believe we only scored 23.

More on this in the stat roll thread, but regression to the mean finally got us on 3rd and 4th down. We’d be comically great up until now. We finally had a down game, and it results in 23 points.

But that game really didn’t change a whole lot to me, once I got over the initial disappointment of hoping for a true miracle season and going undefeated into the playoff. It’s a good team, with flaws. Just like a lot of teams. We didn’t lose by 30. With Cam Ward, we’ll be in the game against anyone we play, imo. This one, we came up one possession short.
Well said. I’ve said several times since the game ended as terribly as we played GT still caught a huge break. Nine times out of 10 Cam gets out of that tackle. Unfortunately this was the 10th time and he fumbled. No one can make me believe had that not happened we would not have gone down and scored and pulled that one out of our rear end.

That said I’ve watched too many crazy games this year to rule out Miami winning out and winning the ACC, from there… who knows?

Just heard sportstalk guy who has covered ACC said this was best game GT has played under Key. Goes to my point that we arent good enough yet, to handles everyones best shot.

Cant say that on here. Alot of Colin Cowherd "I have new information so my view has changed" mofos on here. Lol. People want to delete that preseason predictions thread and act like this was "natty or bust" type season. Win the **** ACC (ESPECIALLY if we are playing SMU; I will have my pitchfork out if SMU wins the ACC title before we do) and whatever happens after that, I will accept.
SMU offense is so much better than GT's. Scary thought for our weak *** D.

I'm furious about our flaws because I watch and rewatch our games. However glancing around: Every team that they think is good enough to compete has serious flaws and are very getable. We have as good a shot as anyone.
Canes shades off it’s the most balanced year in cfb I’ve seen in a long long time.

That’s the macrocosm of it. In the finer details is gt dominating time of possession and playing keep away for an already off day for the offense. Some argue we had close to the same number of plays but when the offense is not getting it done that time of possession is going to get you.

Yup. They clearly had a gameplan, and they whipped our *** with it. Short passes, work the edges, keep them in 3rd and manageable, don't turn it over, and keep Cam off the field. It worked.

He’s generally fair. I’ve said before that anyone thinking we had a serious chance at winning a Natty this year was delusional. Winning the ACC, finally, and getting into the playoff was the goal.
Getting into the Playoff is key, because no one knows what can happen. In the NFL, people always say "Get into the tournament". Why? Because you can go on a run and do something. Let's be honest, Miami is a team that has a special QB and an offense that can put up points against **** near anyone. That is a dangerous combo in a single elimination playoff.

This team has obvious flaws, we knew those flaws coming into the season. What matters is finishing the season strong and finding a way to get into the party.

Lack of ability to adjust will always hold this team back. Ward was not on early in the game, take the points. Demonstrated lack of situational awareness that this D is swiss cheese. 6 extra points and Miami wins the game, all other things being equal.

Like he said teams that are supposed to keep it going into playoffs are peaking right around now.

National people seem to not overreact as much cause they considered us overrated anyways.

Somewhat. But also, national people are "national people" because they're not fanboys. They don't throw a party or kill themselves based off a week's result. Josh said it best....this loss doesn't change his perception. It was a one-score game. We've won a couple this year (VT and Cal...I know Louisville was 1 score but I really never felt we were in danger that game, they led the game for something like 2 total minutes), and we just lost one. We didn't get blown off the field. We had a very down game offensively, our defense did what it does and was generally poor, and we got beat. We won the previous 2 games by 50 points.

Where do we go from here is the million dollar question? Do we beat Wake by 20 and Cuse by 10 on the road and roll into Charlotte and play well? Or do we **** the bed? That's the real story, not necessarily what happened on Saturday, as disappointing as it was. It's very hard to win every single game in a season, favored or not.

We’ve heard all season, and even in fall camp, about how good the leadership, and the mind set, of this team. IF that’s truly the case, I would expect they’ll do some soul searching and get their **** together - on both sides of the ball.

They had a players only meeting during the last bye and I would expect they will during this one as well. May not hear about it but I think it’ll happen. The issues, especially on defense, have been discussed incessantly so we all know what the issues are. It’ll be interesting to see what changes are made come 11/23.
