Ludwig grew up in Ogden, UT.Just like Phil Longo not leaving UNC
Still here.
I don't get how firing a guy for coaching an offense that went multiple games without scoring a touchdown is ****ting on a guy. You fire the guy and say the results weren't good enough. End of. The day after the season ends. That's walking that accountability talk Mario does all the time. Those of you waiting for a Gattis to be fired...he won’t. The mopes are correct but they miss the point.
If he was going to be fired he would have been by now. That’s obvious.
But if Mario is waiting for some coaching changes after bowls and playoffs the waiting makes sense.
Iowa plays their bowl 12/31. I read they are under pressure to make changes to one of the worst offenses (yeah even worse than ours) after then.
Early smoke was they were looking at Gattis and they just so happened to sign the qb that played under Gattis that made the playoffs.
This allows the appearance that Gattis is leaving vs getting fired and Mario allows him to save face after an abysmal year.
Doing one of his assistants a solid doesn’t go unnoticed in the coaching ranks. It’s a cut throat business, no doubt. Doesn’t mean you have to go about it ****ting on your assistants on the way out.
Just an opinion and hopeful thinking but certainly a plausible scenario.
If Gattis doesn’t leave by 1st couple of weeks in Jan count me in among the mopes.
Not sure about rest of country. But I do know it wasn’t the first time Mario replaced a coordinator north of Feb. Did the same with Leavitt at UO. So for those saying “if he’s not fired yet he won’t be” isn’t correct based on Mario’s past moves. How many coaches were hired after that date?
Any earth shattering hires?
I am referring to some on here that wanted him gone like after mid season. What you say is true but not the whole story. There are also contractual reasons for Mario to let this play out this way as well.I don't get how firing a guy for coaching an offense that went multiple games without scoring a touchdown is ****ting on a guy. This is what I started wondering about as well... is this basically a situation like last year when Miami was going to keep Manny if they didn't get Mario. Is Mario big game hunting and if he doesnt find someone that he wants he will stick with Gattis?I think you are conflating two points. Yes, the hiring of someone reasonably can wait until the end of their season. That applies to the interview process too. However, that has absolutely zero bearing on the firing of Josh Gattis. You do not need to have his replacement lined up to fire Gattis. And frankly, as objective and patient as I am, this is starting to feel a whole lot like the Manny situation last year in that he was going to stay if they couldn't get Mario.
If Mario had fired Gattis by now, this conversation would have a completely different tenor. At this point, while Mario does not owe us any explanation or move on a timeline, people are 100% well within their rights to react to it negatively and question whether or not a change will happen. And that is 100% on Mario.
This is kind of my fear, but that is candidly a ****** way to go about doing business. I felt the same way about how they handled last year. If someone is not the right guy, they are not the right guy. It is not and should not be Garrett Riley, using an example, and that is the only acceptable alternative to Gattis. Just the same as last year should not have been Mario or bust, once you decide Manny is not the best person to run the program. But this year is even more egregious as there are dozens of people out there that are better suited to run this offense with more success in a vision that Mario wants. At least last year you could say Mario, Kiffin, and maybe one or two others. This is what I started wondering about as well... is this basically a situation like last year when Miami was going to keep Manny if they didn't get Mario. Timing is the key variable

My speculation is that Mario learned his lesson on OC candidates and already has an agreement with the next guy…. At the sametime Mario is very respectful to the coaching industry
Therefore, it’s gonna happen quick, Gattis announces he’s leaving for a new school (Iowa?) and Mario announces the next OC since that school’s bowl game is done
While I don't disagree with you and think the way they handled it last year was not great, I give them a little bit more of a pass than I normally would as I think they looked at it as 'we are leaning Manny is not the right guy, but aren't necessarily ready to pull the plug, but we know Mario is the right guy and if we don't get him this year, we may never so that tips the scales.' I don't think that is how Mario is viewing Gattis, but who knows. This is kind of my fear, but that is candidly a ****** way to go about doing business. I agree with 100%. I also think last year had some outside factors. Like do Ruiz, Mas brothers, etc contribute whatever they did for anyone other than Mario? While I don't disagree with you and think the way they handled it last year was not great, I give them a little bit more of a pass than I normally would as I think they looked at it as 'we are leaning Manny is not the right guy, but aren't necessarily ready to pull the plug, but we know Mario is the right guy and if we don't get him this year, we may never so that tips the scales.' @jhtheking I got you for disagreeing when Gattis is fired. You can take the ban tooTiming is the key variable

That's because there is still a business to run. You can't run without a CFO or a Director of XYZ or fill in the job in many cases. There is nothing for an OC to do right now besides recruit, and he hardly has been doing that.In the business world, it’s quite common to discreetly interview candidates for a role that is currently held by another. You hire the new candidate first with the understanding that you will then fire the incumbent. It happens all of the time, especially when trying to avoid a prolonged vacancy that could further hurt the business.
Does this practice extend to sports? Sometimes. ADs often send out feelers and conduct interviews in neutral locations when looking for a new HC. These initial interviews occur prior to the current HC being fired (or at least before it becomes public). This is not uncommon.
Is this what Mario is up to? No clue, but I sincerely hope so.
