$$$ kept us in it. NC jumped in late after BB was hired.
$$$ was not the only pitch. We maintained a low profile for a reason.

Dawson looking at QBs to portal this offseason…Good breakdown, brother.
I can see what they see...but its desperation hour because you need to squint hard to look past the trash balls he throws.
Shannon Dawson just surveying the possibilities and thinking I CAN FIX HIM after a guy with numerous Heisman Trophy winning QBs, #1 overall picks, and All-Pros can only get 58% passing and a ton of picks out of him.
Everything is a step down from Cam Ward, but this guy looks like Will Levis after federal and California state income taxes that puts Chick Fil A Poly Sauce in his coffee.
He would fall right in line with Mario’s grand plan of making every game day a roller coaster of emotional experiences to see how tough you are mentally.Let me preface by saying I don’t want this kid, but he would have 5x the protection and a much better and consistent run game here than he did at USC. That alone would help him out and improve his game.
Big concerns with him for me though. He looks like a hold your breath type every time he drops back.

OKAAAYYYYY. Certainly no mope . But my feeling was that it was a steep hill to climb once the news broke of his former OC and QB coach going to Oklahoma. That coupled with the confidence OU showed seemed to indicate to me there was likely more going on than a simple bidding war.Because he wasn't. Why would YOU say that he was a long shot? That's what slump-shouldered mopes do to make themselves feel better after they lose out on a hard-fought recruiting battle, and I feel that you probably did not intend to come off that way. I know what we offered, and it was far superior to what Oklahoma offered. If you want to discuss details, DM me.
What Oklahoma did that we could not do was to recruit his family all during the fall. Mateer had no agent or advisor to guide him, only his family. His choice was solely to please his family and two former coaches.
gone after*should have went after Mendoza if they didnt have a plan (which they appear to not)
Completely moronic approach by pp departmentOKAAAYYYYY. Certainly no mope . But my feeling was that it was a steep hill to climb once the news broke of his former OC and QB coach going to Oklahoma. Mario is more of a "river boat gambler" than I am by nature. He has to be confident to do what he does. Sometimes, I do think there are variables, signs, call them what you will, that he and the staff ignore or believe they will overcome. It worked last year with Cam , not so much this cycle with Mateer. I know the sums these QBs are being offered are life changing for most of them. But we've seen it more than once where the money is simply not the biggest motivator.
Honestly, I think Emory's performance in the bowl game has made many of us, and I will include myself in this, question the QB recruiting strategy this cycle. It's really hard to believe they ever thought all the positive things that were sold to the fan base through the beat writers, site reporters, etc. I am going to assume (hope?) there are no orange & green glasses being worn with regard to Judd.
Anyway, there is no doubt Mario will kill himself trying to get a good enough QB through the transfer portal. make that multiple QBs....

gone after*
I think the personal relationship with the Mendoza family made it difficult. When you add business to family it’s generally not a good outcome. Not to mention the fact that Mendoza would have been under tremendous pressure at Miami with a difficult fan base, ready to pounce. It’s what any good parent, advisor does. Better fit for him at IU.

if news of us tampering got out, I'm certain news of him entering the portal would ... right?Technically since yesterday was the last day to enter it could still be announced today (delusion)

This guy is horrible and his portal window is closed to transfer so thank god for that also
NoI have to actually work today is this kid in the portal?
That mentality works better in recruiting when all kids are on the same signing calendar. You can keep working on your 1 guy until the bitter end and still know when your time is up and being able to pivot late and try to convince someone else to flip.I think you're right. I'm sure Mario's belief in signing Mateer was buoyed by how he landed Cam last year. But that was a huge gamble. It was such a big gamble, we almost went into spring ball with Emory/Reese as our QBs. Talk about malpractice. That seems to be Mario's approach - set his sights on one main dude and then go all in to the point that the backup options aren't waiting around too long.
