Incoming DT Transfer

It is kind of funny that we finally got what everyone hass been clamoring for over the last few weeks. Do we need a DT? Yes. Can he play DT? Yes.
And there are still people here trying to spin it into a negative. Incredible.

They wanted a Dexter Lawrence or Christian Wilkins to grad transfer in. All American or bust. Fact of the matter is he most likely wont start. Starters weren't our issue. Having guys to go in and give a few quality snaps behind them was the concern and this guy might just be able to go in with Bethel and give us quality snaps!

Exactly. He is exactly what most of us had in mind for a transfer (JC or Grad). That is, someone who can give you quality depth off the bench. No he's not going to be a star or even start (unless there are multiple injuries), but he's capable of playing. And he shouldn't affect our attractiveness for '18 or '19 DT recruits.

For me, the ideal has always been Silvera, another quality '18 guy (Briggs, Thompson, Coburn, Chatman, et al) and a transfer. We have a chance to do exactly that.

A high quality JUCO DT would've fit the need much better.

We needed extra experience, but we also need quality.

Butch somehow managed to get 2 4-star JUCO DTs at FIU.

I'm fairly certain we could've found one as well.

At any rate, hopefully this chap will give us enough quality to go with the rest of the group.

There's nothing negative about this, he's a rotational guy with a good pff. We pretty much got Moten back for another year. Some of you idiots are worthless a holes , like I said "there's nothing negative about this".

2019 D-Line looks very strong in Florida. And your boy Butch had to eat a 2* OG in 2019 to pull his 4* juco DT brother. I am more than happy to add a one-and-done player with college-ready size for DT depth.

EDIT: And Tart-Spencer (the other DT) got kicked out of EMCC and whatever he did it was so bad alabaga stopped recruiting him.

It doesn't matter whether he's an initial counter for 2017 or 2018. What matters is we can only bring in 28 NEW players because only 3 can be applied to the 2017 class. It doesn't matter if its him or an EE being applied to the 2017 initial counter limit.

Right now including him and Boulware, We will have 21 Initial counters used up. That means we have 7 total left - and Nesta Silvera will be one of them. So, Now we only have 6 more recruits we can get in this class.

Guys that seem like sure things - Andrew Chatfield and Marquez Ezzard. That leaves us with 4 Scholarships left. Tyson Campbell and Patrick Surtain obviously have their scholarships saved no matter what.

That leaves us with 2 left out of Coburn, Thompson, Briggs, Peters, Chatman, and Gerald, and any other potential transfer we might be looking at. IMO the order I listed them in, is the order of who are takes. If Coburn and Thompson want in, we close up shop for the year. That doesn't seem likely though, so Briggs and Chatman are probably the most likely.

Has this been confirmed? For some reason I thought the number was 4, but I could definitely be mistaken. Thanks.

He absolutely impacts numbers. He counts against the 25 scholarships limit per year.

No he doesn’t, he only has an effect on the final 85 scholarship limit. He will not count as a member of the 2018 class. We will likely have at least 5 scholarships available this year even if signing day goes well...

False, go read the NCAA scholarship rules.

Technically you’re right but that rule is just for show, at the end of the day we’ll find a way to add who we can. Most common way to do that is by rolling the early enrollees back a class. Tennessee signed like 33 players last January for example.

Wrong, we can sign a maximum of 28 this year, including the maximum number of kids we can count toward last year's class, which is 3. 28 is a maximum and we can't increase that number.

Even with a cap of 28 who gets left out? I really don’t see us having a number issue this year. As for all these rules, rest assured that coaches will exploit every loophole to be found and coaches will continue to add the players that they want.

We have high risk/reward, potential impact guys with Gerald Willis, Jon Ford and Nesta Silvera. We need experienced bodies.

This is a 5th year player who played against OLs like Wisconsin, Iowa and Ohio State. He has some burst. He'll have the best coaching in America. Short-term depth plug until this year's signees grow some hair on their chins.

Yeah but JUCO kids are a major question mark, you like them cause they are older which is important in the trenches. This is a big pick up, even though it's not high caliber.

But can he play NT? Because as far as I can tell he's a 3tech DT. Thats what doesn't make sense about this. If he was a 1tech, it would make absolute sense, but if he can't play 1tech, how does this help us all that much?

You mention all those high risk high reward players, but all of those guys you mention can play the 3tech spot along with Bethel, Martin, and every DT we are still recruiting (except Coburn). And yeah I think Ford and Nesta are going to play 1tech basically out of need, but it would have been much better to have a grad transfer NT and let them grow more.

The position we have a real strong need at is 1tech. And if he can't help us there, why get him?

He's not small at 6'3, 300 and he's been in a Big 10 weight program for 4 years.

I haven't seen him enough to say where he'll line up, but my guess is Kool liked his get-off. Kool doesn't like big lumbering guys, even at NT.

Butch is a DL master like Saban I didnt think it was possible to do that at FIU

Yep.

But the main point was that there are clearly JUCO DTs out there.

Hope the grad xfer works out, but the grad xfer market for DTs can't touch the JUCO market.

We'll see.

Well its kinda tough to say since we don't know how many EEs are back counted per year. But Richt did say to expect max of 28 players in this class. I'm taking that to mean that is the maximum amount of Initial Counters we have to work with (between 2018 and backcounting to 2017).

You gots beating your chest about guys that help us beat Virginia

Will he help us beat FSU, Clemson, or LSU? **** no I don’t give a dam about this signing and neither should you. You guys make me sick

Start Ford and Willis. Then sub in this kid and Bethel. Then give Nesta and Martin spot duty snaps. This way, we can RS Chatman and Briggs, because they will be needed in '19.

The JUCO route at DT especially doesn't tend to pan out until the 2nd year in the P5 program. JUCO DTs are a huge risk and have enormous bust potential. That kid Hooks, who chose Old Urine over us a few years ago, looked like a can't miss JUCO DT. He missed in a big way.

lol well we are one injury away from getting blown the **** over up the middle with inexperienced and young DT's. He at least brings P5 game experience and a helpful body, something Fines could not do.

Needed depth at a critical position of need. Welcome aboard young man and let's see what you can do. Just from a depth standpoint of running our practices this isba good pickup. Who knows, maybe he comes in and is a freak out there.
