The Miami Hurricanes men and women tennis teams started play today at the Wide World of Sport complex in Orlando, Florida. The men had five advance in the singles draw and one team in the doubles draw, while the women has three players advance to the next rounds on Friday. The biggest wins came from Andrew Harrington who defeated nationally ranked #71 and No. 3 seed Zack McCourt in the first round, while Sinead Lohan continued to impress with a win over No. 5-8 Carla Tur Mari of Oklahoma State.

The Miami Hurricanes men’s and women’s tennis teams continued their play at the Clay Court Invitational in Orlando, Florida today. While the men continued to struggle a bit, the women really showed up today, taking 12 of 13 singles matches. Yeah, that’s pretty good. The women have No. 1 seed Stephanie Wagner and No. 2 seed Lina Lileikite in the A Singles semifinals, No. 3 seed Wendy Zhang and Sinead Lohan in the B Singles semifinals and No. 1 seed Silvia Fuentes in the C Singles draw. This is the final event for the women’s team this year and they have had a great tournament so far to wrap up their fall season. It’s going to be very exciting to watch them when the dual team season starts in January.
On the men’s side, Henrique Tsukamoto put up the best finish for the Canes. He made it to the round of 16 and went up against the No. 1 seed Hunter Harrington (ranked No. 30 in the country). It was a very close match and Tsukamoto put up a great fight but finally went down 7-6(8), 6-7(6), 6-4. So close! Wilfredo Gonzalez and Kevin Bondar won their consolation matches and will continue play on Saturday.

Four Canes in the finals!
The Miami Hurricanes men’s and women’s tennis teams finished day three of the Clay Court Invitational in Orlando, Florida today. The guys had two members still in the consolation draw, but both went out in super tie-breaks today. That wraps up the guys for this tournament. The best finish was Henrique Tsukamoto’s Round of 16 finish, while the best win was from Andrew Harrington who beat the No. 71 player in the country in the first round on Thrusday. The women were again outstanding on Saturday, with Stephanie Wagner, Wendy Zhang, Sinead Lohan and Silvia Fuentes advancing to the finals of their respective groups. Zhang knocked out the No. 1 seed in her group to advance. The finals will be tomorrow.

The Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team wrapped up their fall season today at the Collegiate Clay Court Invitational in Orlando, Florida. The girls had four players in three of the singles finals and freshman Wendy Zhang came away with the title in her group by defeating fellow Cane Sinead Lohan in the final. Stephanie Wagner and Silvia Fuentes were defeated in their singles finals. But overall, the ladies had a great weekend and now have two months to get ready for the team season that starts in January.
As mentioned yesterday, the guys wrapped up their tournament on Saturday. The best result for the guys was senior Henrique Tsukamoto’s Round of 16 finish. Freshman Piotr Lomacki did not participate in this tournament. The guys still have a couple more events on their fall schedule before they wrap things up and get ready for the team season.

Miami Hurricanes freshman Piotr Lomacki is playing in the USA Futures 30 in Birmingham, Alabama this week. The tournament begins on November 5th and is a clay court event. Lomacki will go up against 8th-seeded Mikhail Fufygin of Russia in the first round. Fufygin is seeded eighth but Lomacki is actually ranked a few spots higher. The draw was made before this week’s rankings came out and Fufygin (#841) fell below Lomacki (#800) in the new rankings. They are scheduled to begin play at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Lomacki is also in the doubles draw with France’s Arthur Surreaux. They are seeded No. 2 in the draw! Good luck to Lomacki!

In his first round match, Lomacki upset the No. 8 seed Mikhail Fufygin of Russia 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the 2nd round! His next opponent will be either No. 1230 Osma Zoghlami or unranked Sora ***uda of Japan. In doubles Lomacki was teamed up with France’s Authur Surreaux and they were seeded No. 2, but they were upset in the first round by Randy Blanco and Jun Nan Tao.
 
Two Miami Hurricanes have received at-large berths for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships! After they lost in the ITA Regionals, it didn’t look like Stephanie Wagner and Lina Lileikite would be playing after the Orlando event. But the ITA announced the participants this week and Wagner was selected for the singles tournament and she was also selected for the doubles tournament with Lileikite! The competition begins Nov. 6, Thursday and ends on No. 9, Sunday. Wagner will go up against Jessica Wacnik, the ITA Northeast Regional Champion in the 1st round. In doubles, Wagner and Lileikite will face Michigan’s Emina Bektas and Alex Najarian, the ITA Midwest Regional Champions. Play starts 9 a.m. Thursday. Good luck to Wagner and Lileikite!

Good day for the Canes! Freshman Piotr Lomacki won his 2nd round match at the Birmingham Futures in Alabama to advance to the quarterfinals! The other seeds in the draw have all lost so he might just advance all the way to the final at least!

The ladies mopped up today as well! The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships got underway at the site of the U.S. Open in New York. Junior Stephanie Wagner defeated the Northeast Regional champion to advance to the 2nd round. She then teamed up with Lina Lileikite and they defeated the Midwest Regional champs to advance to the quarterfinals! Go Canes!

Good results and bad results today from the Canes.

First the good! Piotr Lomacki won his match at the Futures 30 in Birmingham, Alabama today to advance to the semifinals. This is a great result from a college player. Lomacki has advanced as far as the semifinals of a Futures tournament two other times but he has never gotten to a final. His next opponent is ranked No. 212 in the world so it will be a tough task. Stephanie Wagner defeated the No. 2 seed at the ITA Indoors in New York and has advanced to the semifinals as well. Wagner and Lina Lileikite made it to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw but were defeated by the No. 4 seeded team to miss a spot in the semifinals. If they had won, they would have faced former Cane Kelsey Laurente of Oklahoma State in the semifinals. Laurente was the No. 2 player for the Canes last year until she was suspended for reasons unknown right before the NCAA tournament and finally transferred out. That would have been an interesting match.

Now the bad. The rest of the men's tennis team are up in Gainesville for the Florida Invitational this week. For the first day, all eight Canes went up against a Gator and every single one of them lost. Only Christian Langmo was able to win a set. It was bad. Even in doubles they fought seven matches and manged to win only two. While Lomacki is going to be good, the rest of the team looks like it will struggle to get the Canes into the NCAA tournament this year. It does not look good.

The impressive results by Piotr Lomacki at the Birmingham Futures and Stephanie Wagner at the ITA National Indoors finally came to an end today. Lomacki was defeated in the demifinals by the No. 212 ranked player in the world and Wagner was defeated by the No. 5 seeded player in the semifinals as well. Still it was a great week for them and should give them great momentum going into the team season in January.

The rest of the men's team in Gainesville continued to struggle. They dropped five of seven singles matches and won only one of six doubles matches. Something needs to happen or the men's season is going to be brutal.

Former Cane Dani Vallverdue cut ties with World # 6 Andy Murray yesterday. Vallverdue has known Murray since they were in the same tennis school in Spain and he had been one of Andy's coaches during the last 5 or 6 years. Apparently they had a falling out over Murray hiring Amelie Mauresmo (former world #1 WTA player) and they finally ended their working relationship over it. Sad to hear.
 
Shutting down my Canes tennis site at the end of the year but hopefully I will still post Canes tennis stuff here. Thanks to everyone who supports all Canes sports!

Former All-American Dani Vallverdu has signed on as world ranking No. 7 Tomas Berdych! Vallverdu was let go by Andy Murray a few weeks ago but now he finds himself working with another top ten player looking for his first grand slam tournament win.

Tomas Berdych is 29, from the Czech Republic and has been in the top ten for the last five years. His highest ranking is No. 5. He was the 2010 Wimbledon runner-up, has won one Masters title and was a member of two Davis Cup championship teams.

A tennis forum has a poll for men's tennis coaches on the hot seat. Sadly but inevitably, Miami's Rincon is on there and leading it. He's got to get it turned around this season.

The men's team have started off the season in a very bad way. After defeating Florida Atlantic 5-2 in their season opener, they hosted Central Florida. UCF beat them for the first time ever last year and the Canes were expected to get some revenge, but with Shalala in the stands, they lost 3-4. Then they headed to Waco, Texas for the ITA Kick-off, the regionals for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. They faced No. 40 Drake and thought they gave them a good fight, the Canes went down 2-4. Today they faced No. 61 Tulane. The Canes should beat this team but after winning the doubles point, they were swept in the singles and lost 1-4. They are now 1-3 for the season and with the very tough ACC season coming up later, they will be doing good to make it to .500 and stay in the Top 75 in the country. We can forget about the NCAA Championships this year.
The women are completely on the other side, sweeping North Florida and Florida State to advance to the national tournament next month. They could be national contenders this year.
Not sure what is going to happen with the men's team. They have really fallen. This year will be the fourth consecutive year to miss the NCAA Championships. Hard to be positive about the this team right now.

After a disappointing 1-3 start to the 2015 dual team season, the Miami Hurricanes men’s tennis team’s season got even worse with a 4-1 loss to unranked Florida Gulf Coast. They actually won the doubles point but then it was all downhill from there. Later on in the afternoon, the Canes took on unranked Liberty and struggled to a 4-2 win. This leave the Canes at 2-4 for the year. There’s no use sugar-coating the loss to FGCU. That was bad. Even though this is a team with many freshmen, Miami has no business losing to the Eagles. There was hope that the team could finish with a .500 record this season but at this point a 6-17 season seems more likely. The No. 71 Canes will probably fall out of the next rankings. Nowhere to go but up now.
 
After seven matches, the men's tennis team are sitting at 3-5. All three wins are from unranked (#76 or lower) teams. They have even lost to Florida Gulf Coast which is about as embarrassing as it gets. They started the season ranked No. 52 but they have now fallen out of the Top 75 rankings and at this point it doesn't look like they will be back.

The ladies are at 4-2 and are ranked No. 9 in the country. They have beaten who they are supposed to beat, but they have also received beatdowns from higher ranked teams. Probably an Elite Eight season at best.
 
Miami's putrid season continues. Loses to also-unranked Georgia Tech 2-4 at home. Even their two gimme wins double-header against Bethane Cookman was rained out so they may have one more win this season (Boston College). Headed for a 5-17 season. Just awful.
The women continue to win while their ranking continues to go down. College tennis's ranking computer calculates the team's opponents' records and even though a team wins, it's ranking can drop. Miami hasn't fought many good teams yet this season and so they are bouncing around between 12 and 20. The women that is. The men can barely win anything.
