October 1st UPDATE: Canes Freshman Piotr Lomacki defeatedDuke’s 11th seeded Bruno Semenzato today 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(5)! According to @CanesMensTennis, Lomacki served for the win at 5-3 and 6-5 but was broken both times before finally getting the win in a third set tiebreak. Lomacki now advance to the 64-player main draw. He’s the first Cane to play in the All-American main draw since former All-American Daniel Vallverdu (was seeded No. 3 but lost in 1st round) in 2008.

October 2nd UPDATE: Canes freshman Piotr Lomacki went up against top seed Lenz of Baylor hn the first round of the ITA All-American Championships today. He took the first set and almost came up with the upset but fell 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Despite the defeat, Lomacki had a great tournament to be the first Miami player tn get to the main draw since 2008!

On the women’s side, Stephanie Wagner/Lina Lileikite advancf to the second round and will play again later today. Clementina Riobueno/Monique Albuquerque will also play. In the singles, Wagner got through to the second round!
 
The Canes finished their run in the 2014 ITA All-American Championships. While they were not able to get into the later rounds, there was still some positive results to look at. Freshman Piotr Lomacki became the first men’s player from Miami to play in the main draw since 2008. He had an unfortunate draw in having to play the top seeded Julian Lenz of Baylor in the first round. He played extremely well, taking the first set and getting to 5-5 in the second but Lenz took over from there. In consolation, he then had to play No. 16 Dane Webb of Ohio State. He was defeated in two tough sets. After seeing his play during the last month, Lomacki just may be our No. 1 when the team season comes around.
As for the ladies, Stephanie Wagner lost in the round of 16 to No. 2 Robin Anderson of UCLA. Wagner/Lina Lilekite won through the qualifying rounds to get to the main draw. They lost in the first round but then made it to the finals of the consolation. No.3 Clementina Riobueno/Monique Albuquerque was upset in the quarterfinal by the No. 5 seed in a very close third set tie break. With two tough doubles teams, the women’s team is going to be tough to beat in the team season.

The women's tennis team may be the best thing the Miami Hurricanes have going right now. tough as nails coach, Sweet Sixteen eight years in a row, NCAA runner-up in '06, 2013 ACC tournament title, 2014 ACC regular season title, etc.

Canes freshman Sinead Lohan wins two titles at the Bedford Cup State of Florida Championships! The singles final for Flight A was held this morning and Lohan defeated Florida’s Peggy Porter 6-2, 6-4 in the final! In the afternoon,Lohan and Wendy Zhang took the doubles title in Flight A by beating Florida’s Stojic/Wookcock! Great weekend for the Canes freshmen!

Good question. Coach Rincon is a great guy and I've heard assistant head coach ****son is a great recruiter. (Just what I've heard) Rincon has been head coach for 10 years now (this will be his 11th) and they have missed the NCAA tournament five of the ten years. The last few players he recruited were maybe a bit too small. He's gotten some big-sized recruits this year. Lomacki seems like he has the potential to be very good. The others I'm not sure of yet. Really hoping Langmo and Clark will surprise this year. Clark was the runner up in his bracket at the Bedford Cup last month so that was promising. But this team is still too young. The seniors Gonzalez and Tsukamoto don't have what it takes to lead the freshmen to the NCAAs this year I'm afraid. I'm just hoping they don't fall out of the Top 75 rankings this year. NCAA may be two years away. And I hope they prove me completely wrong this year and get there.
 
I remember when the men's team was always top 15 with at least 1 or 2 All-Americans every year. Of course, back then they had 7 full scholarships to offer (I think now it's down to 4 or 5 under NCAA Title VIX, which isn't even enough to field a full team). Offering a recruit a 1/2 scholarship at Miami is still more expensive than if a kid walks on to a state school where he lives like Florida, UCLA, Virginia etc., and that is where Mario is at a huge recruiting disadvantage compared to state schools.

And yet Southern California, a private school, has won 5 of the last six national championships. It can be done.
 
The ITA Regional Championships are set to begin October 16th at the University of Georgia for the men and from October 17th at Georgia Tech University for the women. The regional championships is basically the qualifying tournament for the ITA Indoor Championships held in November at the Billie Jean Tennis Center in New York. The singles and doubles champions from each of the 12 regions will qualify for the national tournament. Unlike the All-American, the Miami Hurricanes have had some great success in this tournament in the past. The Canes boast two men's singles champions (Connie Falk '91 and Mike Russell '97), two women's singles champions (Megan Bradley '04 and Audra Cohen '06) and one women's doubles champion (Lisa Gregory/Ronnie Reis '86). The Canes men will be sending eight players to the tournament this year. seniors Wilfredo Gonzalez and Henrique Tsukamoto, sophomore Bernard Tefel, and freshmen Nile Clark, Christian Langmo, Andrew Harrington, Piotr Lomacki, and Alexander Fahnehjelm.

The ITA southeast regional tournament got underway today at the University of Georgia in Athens. Eight Canes from the men’s team are taking part, with three players in today’s qualifying rounds and three teams in the doubles draw. The women are also playing the regional tournament at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The draws were announced today.
In the men’s qualifying tournament, Alexander Fahnehjelm, Andrew Harrington, and Nick Clark took to the courts. They needed to win two times to get to the main draw. Harrington and Clark made it to the second round, and Harrington won his second match as well, while Clark lost a very close match to just miss the main draw. In the doubles first round, Wilfredo Gonzalez/Piotr Lomacki lost their opening match, but Fahnehjelm/Harrington and Clark/Henrique Tsukamoto both won to advance. On Saturday, they will play the 2nd and 3rd rounds of doubles, the first round of the singles main draw, and the qualifying singles consolation.
Meanwhile, the women announced the draws today and there are eight singles players and three doubles teams representing Miami. Seven are playing in the singles main draw while Judith Bohnenkamp is entered in the B singles draw. Stephanie Wagner is seeded 4th and Lina Lileikite is seeded 16th in the main singles draw, while in the doubles, Clementina Riobueno/Monique Albuquerque are seeded No. 1 and Wagner/Lileikite are the No. 7 seeds. It was a rough day for the Miami Hurricanes men's tennis team today. At Day 2 of the ITA Southeast Regionals in Athens, Georgia, The team only managed one win out of eight singles matches and went 0-3 in the doubles. The only one to survive the day was freshman Piotr Lomacki. He is seeded #9~16 and advanced to the second round. The next two rounds will be played on Saturday, with Lomacki first going up against North Florida's Lasse Muscheites.
The women's team did a bit better, with four players advancing to the singles second round. Of the four seeded Canes, #10 Lina Lileikite and #14 Monique Albuquerque were upset in the first round. #4 Stephanie Wagner and #16 Clementina Riobueno advanced, along with freshmen Wendy Zhang and Sinead Lohan. Top-seeded Clementina Riobueno/Monique Alguquerque had a disappointing end to their tournament in the doubles round of 16, while #7 Stephanie Wagner/Lina Lileikite continued their recent success by advancing to the quarterfinals.

Canes Freshman Lomacki is looking more and more like the real deal. He won two matches today, beating 4th seed Wagland of Georgia to get to the quarterfinals. It looks like Coach Rincon is going to have to play him in the No. 1 singles spot when the team season starts because the others are not showing much yet.
Wagner and Lohan are also in the women's quarterfinals and Wagner/Lileikite are in the doubles semifinals.

The 2014 ITA Southeast Regionals came to a close for the Miami Hurricanes today. Freshmen Piotr Lomacki’s run came to an end in the quarterfinals where he lost to Florida’s Maxx Lipman. On the women’s side, No. 4 Stephanie Wagner and freshman Sinead Lohan were defeated in the quarterfinals. Wagner and Lina Lileikite were also defeated in the doubles semifinals. This means that the Canes will miss out on the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships again this year. For the men, Daniel Vallverdu was the last to represent Miami in the tournament, back in 2008. For the women, Anna Bartenstein was the last to play in the tournament in 2011. Hopefully next year we will finally see some Canes win the Southeast Regional and represent Miami in the national tournament.

The Miami Hurricanes’ men’s and women’s teams are taking part in the 2014 Collegiate Clay Court Invitational at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Florida this week. The competition will be held from October 30, Thursday through November 2, Sunday. The event is hosted by Florida State and will include schools from all over the country. The big news about this even is that ESPN will be televising about 20 hours of the event on ESPN3 during Thursday and Sunday.
