The 2014-15 Miami Hurricanes men's tennis roster is out! After seeing three seniors graduate and one transferring out, the remaining members were down to four, but the roster has six new names on this year's roster! This will bring the number back up to ten. It will be almost a brand new team this year and it will be interesting to see how the fall semester plays out and how Coach Mario Rincon will make his lineup when the new team dual season starts in January. Let's go Canes!

Now that football is over , can we get a preview of the girls tennis team ( don't forget the pics ) .
 
The men's team released their 2014-15 schedule this week. It looks like the guys will have a full season during the fall with ten events scheduled. The fall only has singles and doubles competition so the team will be splitting up and participating in different events. The fall season may give us an idea of what the team will look like in when the team competition starts in January. With six freshmen, it's almost impossible to guess what sort of lineup Coach Rincon will decide on.

The 2014 Bedford Cup, or the State of Florida Championships, will be held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida from September 12th to 15. The Bedford Cup is a fall tennis tournament for Division I men's tennis teams in Florida. It was started in 2011 and this year's event will be the 4th annual tournament. Last year, three Canes participated in the singles and doubles events but none were able to advance past the second round. This will be a great event for some of the Canes team members to go up against some competition in Florida. The members have not been announced yet but will be added to this post as soon as they are announced! Let's go Canes!

The Canes women's tennis team have updated their roster for the 2014-15 year. There are a lot of similarities with the men's team this year. The women's team was left with five members after the seniors graduated and one transferred out. College tennis needs at least six members to field a team for dual competition. So, the women have welcomed five new members to the team this year. The women are in good shape with the upperclassmen, but it's anybody's guess how Coach Yaroshuk-Tews will set her line up. No. 1 is set with Stephanie Wagner who could be ranked in the top 20 in the country when the rankings come out September 8th. The ladies have made the Elite Eight seven years in a row and it will be very interesting to see how the team turns out this year. Fun fact: the ten members represent nine countries!

The fall season finally starts this weekend! For the Bedford Cup State of Florida Championships, the Canes have sent sophomores Bernard Tefel and Daniel Shebshayevich along with freshmen Nile Clark and Andrew Harrington. All 11 of Florida's Division 1 schools are participating.
On the women's side, the Canes have sent six members to the Duke Fab Four in Cary, North Carolina to compete against Duke, UNC, Alabama, Florida, Furman, Oklahoma State, and San Jose State. In a weird twist, Canes freshman Wendy Zhang goes up against former Cane Kelsey Laurente in the first round of the singles. Go Canes!

At the State of Florida Championships in Jacksonville, the freshmen Clark and Harrington both beat players from FAU to advance to the second round on Friday. The sopomores Tefel and Shebshayevich lost close matches in the 1st round. In the doubles, Tefel/Shebshayevich advanced to the second round but the freshmen team lost.
At the Duke Fab 4 in North Carolina, three Canes ladies won their first round matches and three lost out in their first rounds. In the doubles, Riobueno/Albuquerque who are ranked No. 3 in the country easily advanced to the doubles finals.

The guys are in Jacksonville and the girls are in North Carolina this weekend. After two days of play, the big development for the guys is Nile Clark. He has played through to the semifinals of his group which is a pleasant surprise. Tefel/Shebshayevich made it to the quarters of the doubles but forfeited their match against the No. 1 seeds. No reason was given of course.
The women are also getting some good results with Cane No. 1 and nation No. 18 Stephanie Wagner making it to the final of her group. She'll go up against No. 14 Morgan of Florida. Wagner beat her last May in the NCAA tournament. Nation No. 3 Riobueno/Albuquerque are in the final of the doubles tournament. Riobueno also beat nation No. 32 in her group yesterday so good result for her.

Some good results from the tennis teams this weekend. At Jacksonville, freshman Nile Clark won his semifinal match and then battled for four hours before losing in a three-set match in the final. Clark and freshman Andrew Harrington had also advanced to the final of the doubles consolation bracket but had to forfeit because of Clark's marathon match. Sophomore Bernard Tefel won his consolation bracket as well.
The women did even better. Canes No. 1 and 18th-ranked Stephanie Wagner defeated Florida No. 1 and 14th-ranked Brianna Morgan to take the singles title in her group. Clementina Riobueno and Monique Albuquerque held up their No. 3 national ranking with a doubles title in their group as well.

After a successful weekend in North Carolina, the women's team will host the Miami Fall Invite from Sept 19 Fri to Sept 21 Sun. Teams from Baylor, Auburn, Pittsburgh, South Florida and North Florida will take part. This is the first tournament on the newly renovated tennis center. If you live near by, go check it out!

The men's team will be split into two squads this week.
The Farnsworth Ivy International will be held in Princeton, New Jersey. Play starts Sept 19th and ends Sept 21st. Senior Henrique Tsukamoto and freshmen Nile Clark, Alex Fahnehjelm and Andrew Harrington will be in four of the 8 singles draws. Tsukamoto will team up with Fahnehjelm while Clark and Harrinton will team up again this week.
The Fighting Illini Invite at Olympia Fields will be held in Olympia Fields, Illinois from Sept 19th to Sept 21st. Senior Wilfredo Gonzalez, sophmore Bernard Tefel, freshman Piotr Lomacki and freshman Christian Langmo are participating in this tournament. Lomacki and Langmo will be making their debuts as Canes.

They were able to win three out of four matches, with senior Wilfredo Gonzales getting his first win of the season. For the weekend in the tournaments in Illinois and New Jersey, the Miami guys finished with a record of 14 wins (one walkover for Clark) and 13 losses (one walkover for Harrington) in singles, and two wins and seven losses in doubles. Senior Henrique Tsukamoto and Sophmore Bernard Tefel tied for the most win with three. The ITA All-American Championships are next with freshmen Piotr Lomack chosen for the qualifying rounds. I'll wait to review the men's fall season after it's done in November but to be honest things don't look to good right now. I was expecting a bit more from Gonzalez and Lomacki. Really need these guys to be No. 1 and 2 in the singles lineup for the team dual season but still anyone's chance.

The Canes wrap up a very successful tournament and now the four upperclassmen will head for California to take part in the All-American Championships starting this weekend. The women looked very good this weekend and it looks like we have two very solid doubles teams. Of the freshmen, Wendy Zhang seemed to impress me the most. At least three of them need to be fighting for spots in the lineup. Top Ten Recruit Yolimar Ogando has not made her debut yet so really need her to step into the lineup.

In college tennis, there are three major singles titles during the season; the ITA All-American, the ITA National Indoors, and the NCAA Championship. The first of the three, the ITA All-American Championships is starting this weekend. The All-American is one of the biggest tournaments in college tennis with a pre-qualifying round followed by the qualifying and main draw. For the men, the tournament will be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Canes freshmen will be the only Cane to represent Miami in the tournament this year. He was selected for the qualifying round which begins September 30th. The women’s tournament will be held in Pacific Palisades, California. Of the Canes women, Stephanie Wagner was chosen for the main draw, Lina Lileikite is in the qualifying draw, Clementina Riobueno/Monique Albuquerque are in the doubles main draw and Wagner/Lileikite are in the doubles qualifying draw. The pre-qualifying will be held September 27th-28th, the qualifying round will be held September 30th-October 1st, and finally the main draw will be held October 2nd-5th. Of the three major titles, the All-American is the only tournament where no Miami Hurricanes man or woman, singles or doubles have ever won the title. Maybe this year will be the year for the Canes to break that jinx!

September 29 UPDATE: At the ITA All-American Championships qualifying tournament, freshman Piotr Liomacki defeated Indiana’s Daniel Bednarczyk 7-6(4), 6-3 to advance to the second round. He will play Tulsa’s Alejandro Espejo Tuesday 9:30 a.m. At the women’s tournament, Miami’s Lina Lileikite will go up against 3rd seed Romy Kölzer of Clemson in the first round. Stephanie Wagner/Lileikite will also be playing in the doubles first round against Top seeded Colton/Campbell of Vanderbilt. The women certainly didn’t get any favors in the draw for the qualifying tournament but they are more than capable of pulling off the upsets and getting to the main draw. Go Canes!
