How talented is this team really?

We have enough talent to not let the 100th ranked offense in the country curbstomp us at home with a championship game on the line.

Yea but where is that talent? its not on D, our best players r suppose to be DLineman so we can be elite and guess what they r not.

Let's put it this way, I love watching defensive tackles. Throughout the Canes' heyday I focused on them every play. This season I haven't watched 5 plays, after the Florida game. Nobody is worth paying attention to. IMO, if the big guys aren't special, reality eventually catches up with the rest of the team. You can completely ignore the record or where we are ranked. It's inevitable.

Virginia Tech, on the other hand, those defensive tackles were fun to watch. Lots of penetration. It allowed the defensive backs to play quite tight to our receivers because the plays would be shortened. Sure enough, they were burned a couple of times, and it could have been more frequent if we had ever explored the middle of the field. But I sensed very quickly that Virginia Tech was comfortable playing the defensive backs that tight, because they realized we wouldn't send the receivers over the middle.

I still have no idea how Virginia Tech was dismissed as a weakling. They entered last week's game second in the nation in defensive yards per play and third in yards allowed per rush.

We have nice small and midsized talent. That's nice but it doesn't threaten the top programs. Notice how Alabama's defense actually improves and looks more physical in the bowl game? They've swamped Notre Dame, LSU and Michigan State in bowls the past three seasons, allowing virtually nothing and intimidating those offenses. Can you imagine our little powder puff defense in those games? I always love the hype toward UTough.

When we're ranked in the Top 10 in preseason, then the talent will be there. It's that simple. USC may look like a disaster last season and early this year, but their talent level was not a myth and it allowed the quick resurgence. Same with Florida, as soon as next season. Anyone who laughs at them is a fool. Meanwhile, we were #27 preseason based on merit, and lack of dominant talent. Next year it will be somewhat higher, as our roster improves.

I should have mentioned defensive tackles a hundred more times. They are always the trump card, along with special talent at quarterback and the skill positions. I seldom visit the recruiting board but this year I'll want to know about defensive tackles, so there's reason to pay attention to them next year, or soon. I realize there may be another year of transition with stiffs at that position. It's a process, after all.

On a scale of 1 to 10 I would say our overall talent level is a 6. The talent level of our front 7 specifically is abysmal and brings the overall number down a bit.
We have AJ Highsmith playing major minutes at S for Christ's sake. We have Jimmy Gaines starting at MLB and T Cornelius, Shayon Green, and Justin Renfrow also starting and considered the leaders of the defense. Our two best Safeties are true sophs and our best defensive player Deon Bush is a shell of himself due to injury.

On offense the QB depth outside of true frosh Kevin Olsen is a joke. Half of our WR corps is hurt. Apparently we have only one TE that is capable of being a receiving threat and he ***** the bed half the time. Our best player (Duke Johnson) is out for the year and the overall depth behind him is laughable.

To make matters worse our Senoir QB has had a bum ankle/Achilles for most of the year and our Senior RT who is supposed to have 1st round talent is a glorified fluff cake. Meanwhile our starting C gets raped by any DT with a pulse. So yes I would put our talent level at about a 6 right now.

A lot of rationalizing in here. We're talented enough that we shouldn't be allowing 500 yards of offense to horrible ACC offenses. That's all that matters.

No rationalization you and the rest of the simpletons can't comprehend worth a darn. This post had nothing to do with whether we are good enough to do anything. I asked how talented is thiis TEAM really. I never said defense and I never asked what they should or should not be capable of. You guys want to turn every thread into a coach d bash fest. I am in no way defending him. I am asking in general how talented are we. Total roster. Maybe we should break it down by position.

We don't have studs on the D-line, so let's go ahead and employ a 2-gap scheme, which requires your players to be more talented. Good call. That alone makes our D-line look worse than they are.

Then let's tell the rest of our defensive players to fully engage blockers. Let's not use our speed anywhere on defense.

Avoiding blocks and getting penetration is not our brand anymore.

Also, we're gonna play loose coverage. We'll give you 7 yard completions cause we're scared of being beat over the top.

We know what you were hinting at, **** breath.

If guys are getting beat by good routes. If the other team is just blowing us off the ball and running it up our *** then those are things you can point to and blame talent for. When simple crossing routes and swings to RBs are going for 15-20 yards a pop or guys are down field making a catch and not a single defender is in the camera screen then I have a tough time blaming it on the talent.

so who is to blame when 3 guys collide and miss a 3rd and 16 and the guy scores...I think that is on the players, but not sure

For me, it is the players, except when if happens repeatedly then it is on coaches. Hitting each other seems to be our most frequent defensive play this year. It happens over and over again. Maybe Selio put a bounty out on our own and we don't know it.

Mind set and game situation. On 3rd and 17 down 7 with 3 mins left we have a chance to force a 50 yard FG. We would get the ball back with good field position and we get the ball after half. Instead we were content to sit back and give them an easy 8-10 yards and 3 points. I just can't get with that line of thinking from a defensive coach.

Bottom line. We know we don't have Bama talent, but too much talent to let bad offenses slice through our defense without much resistance.

No u really don't know what I was hinting at. You just want everything to be about the defense. Hey that is fine. There are 300 other threads about that. Is it really that hard to think someone is asking about something other than the defensive coaching. Your last comment told me all I need to know about you though. Have a good day

One more thing. I'm not rationalizing anything. Dorito is an absolute dumpster fire. We may be a 6 in talent but the way he coordinates this defense is pathetic.

Coley? Meh. Stemo's limitations notwithstanding his route tree is garbage.I was very concerned about replacing 3 very good offensive coaches. As you can see the play has been offensive.

Basically we have been reduced to playing a modified prevent defense between the 20's. Do you guys remember the garbage this clown rolled out with 16 seconds left against NC? It literally took a great heads up play by Cornelius to avert what would have been a total disaster. D stands for douchebag.

Obviously that is where you are wrong, we got blown out because we didn't have the talent to stop their QB, simple as that. He had a great game it happens.
Talented enough to win the coastal and 10 games with a soft schedule.. Talented enough to not get raped by VT worst offense ever at home with them having 8 turnovers against Duke and BC

R u retarded? Look at Logan's career. Vt only put up 40 points once im against a d 1 opponent in the Thomas era. That was against us. He had two career games against Miami and didn't have one great game all year. It wouldn't be a problem if it was an outlier and the only qb that did it to us, but every ******* qb goes off for a heisman performance on us
