How Does Golden Move Forward?

This is a pro Penn State article but shows how close they came to hiring Al... http://pennstate.scout.com/2/1364879.html This changes things - He LIED. He really was in play until this past Wed or Thurs.. How do you trust this guy and accept him my school? So much for his BS about "Its the U".

I'm now not sure this is fixable...

Gasp. He lied. Or issued a non-denial denial. Surprise surprise in the world of big-time college atheletics. Name a coach who hasn't done this at some point in his career. I'm not saying it's "right", but being a used car salesman is in the DNA of coaches, it's a skill set. So, Relax. Of course it's fixable. Al has to get his mind right, recruit, fix his defense, win games, and all will be well. Who knows, maybe losing out on the Penn State gig will be the best thing that ever happened to him. He was beginning to look the the college football coaching equivalent of an adrenaline junky, a first-responder. A guy who would run into a burning building of a program, "fix" it, and moving on. Now he really has to rise to the occasion. This is an opportunity for him to go where he hasn't gone. So maybe it will work out.

I know one thing, when he get's in front of his players he'd better have his mind right, earn back the trust of his players, or they will see through it. But, they know he's the same guy that was with them everyday, and the same guy who ran on to that field when Malcom got hurt. People can forgive, they can move on. We'll see.

I have no clue, to be honest. It must be hard as **** to move in any direction -- forward, backward, or sideways, when you are as fat as he is.

Good take Gonzo. My question is can he do this now? He lied - understand all coaches do, but this really isn't sittin well with fans and alumni. It happened right in the middle of recruiting season, after a really bad *** kickin in a bowl, with a defense led by his best man that gives up 500+ yards to many... Perfect storm??? This will not be quick or easy - IF he can fix it.

He put himself on the hot seat.

If he had gotten rid of Dorito, a lot of the venom would have subsided. But nope, he wants to go down with his best friend.

I agree partly in that SOME of if it would have subsided, but he would still have to make a reputable hire, not a stooge who is just a change of face as if the fanbase(loyal, rational, or not) are idiots.

- Keep current recruiting class in tact?
- Keep Valentine?
- Fill out remaining spots with quality?
- Mend relations with ****ed off fans and alumni
- Keep the current team and get their buy in?
- Fix a broken defense?
- Address Def staff issue?

Lots of questions... I really believe addressing the Donofrio issue must happen or that cloud will remain...

He moves forward by owning up to his own statements of making this program solid again and by putting a ****-colored jersey on Ohnofrio.

At present he's merely proven that he refuses to apply the same standards to his pet assistants than he does on the players.

If he doesn't correct that, IMO there will be no moving forward. It will impact the players' respect for him which in turn will hinder recruiting.

When you talk, you'd better be prepared to back up your talk or after a certain point no one will believe wtf you say anymore.

That point is now, as in right now, actually as in the first 24 hours after the last debacle with every passing day a day too late, to make the appropriate correction, or at least the elephant-sitting-in-the-kitchin-sink correction.

If that correction is not made, so much for talk. He can continue to talk all he wants, but to me The U, while he's here, will have become nothing more than a jobs program for his buds.

Period.

Golden is going to have the last laugh.

He's making millions off UM. He'll fail here, but he's a smart enough guy to learn from the experience. The jump from Temple to UM was too large, and his background (UVA, BC, etc.) hadn't prepared him properly for UM either. He's failed here because he wasn't equipped to adapt to this level of competition. But I expect that three or four years from now, when he's at some other school, he'll be one **** of a coach.

Like Al Davis would say "Just Win Baby!"

Win in:

Recruiting
Developing the players
Games next year

Everything else will fall in place

This. I really don't give a FCK about the sleezebag at this point as he showed the past weeks how he don't give a fck about miami either.

Failure at THE U is not the road to another HC and a real school. He has shown to be stubborn, narrow minded, and married to his BFF. Those are not attributes for new jobs. If he wins big here then he will be a HC a major school, if not here has killed his career as HC. Al needs to show something on the field justify his attitude. He needs to beat FSU and win ACC. Otherwise, the only the his has proven is that he did okay with a ncaa investigation. He might get a job at another school that is in trouble and needs someone to take the crap for it.

Moving forward, Al must reverse the bleeding on defense AND beat FSU. To protect his BFF, Al has stepped out on the ledge and will be pushed off if he fails. Hopefully, his statement the NO CHANGES were needed was based solely on the fact that he was still hoping to get the PSU job and now he is going to sweep the trash out of staff. I don't care that he lied, I care that his defense stinks and he is blind to it.
