How do we get Bud Foster?

Funny thing about VTech and Foster is they used to be a heavy cover 2 man team until they started getting shredded. They started playing more zone in 2003, and they've continued to build on that.

A lot of guys were running cover 2 man back then: Shannon, Stoops brothers at OU, Brian Van Gorder at UGA, etc...

I understand people's frustration. I want a stout defense more than anybody. Even back when everyone was complaining about Patrick Nix (myself included), I was more concerned about our sagging defense.

Bill Walsh always believed that you could scheme a good offense with less than ideal talent, but defensively you needed the horses. I think that's a bit of an oversimplification, but in general I agree that it's more important to have standout talent in order to field top-tier defenses. Creative guys like Mike Leach and Chip Kelly can come up with ways to score 40 without a slew of blue chip guys, but it's much harder to do that on defense.

For me, I don't have to look much further than the 2009, 2010, and 2011 recruiting classes. Those are our upperclassmen. They're supposed to be the bedrock of the defense. There just isn't a ton of talent there.

Shannon's recruiting fell off a cliff on the defensive side of the ball. The 2009 and 2010 classes weren't very good to begin with, but the high rate of attrition compounded the problem. The 2011 class was a complete mess. We had ONE guy committed when Golden took over, and not even that mean Miami leans. And the dead period started soon after Golden was hired. Anyone who follows recruiting knows that you don't put a class together in one month. It's a multi-year process. We already have 2015 and 2016 kids committed.

The 2012 class is the first full class. From that class (Redshirt Freshmen, true Sophomores, and one JUCO) we pulled our best pass rusher, and our ENTIRE starting secondary. The 2013 class has impact players in it, too. The 2014 class looks even better.

Indulge me as a take a glimpse into the future. This is of course ALL speculation, but who cares? I bolded the 4 and 5-star guys (projected guys as well).

We're another recruiting cycle or two away.

Great post, CAA! Unfortunately, we live in a society that demands instant gratification and generally doesn't understand that it takes time to build a successful team/organization/franchise. As many people have said, football is more about the Jimmies and Joes than the Xs and Os. Certainly, Xs and Os make a difference and there are some guys who are better at the Xs and Os than others, but you can not scheme around the dearth of talent Shannvo left Coach Al. Let's not forget that Coach Al was recruiting with his hands tied be hind his back until a couple of weeks ago as well.

Yep.

I forgot to mention this. Does anyone honestly think the NCAA sanction cloud and constant negative-recruiting had no effect? I think guys like Eddie Goldman and Jaynard Bostwick said the looming sanctions were the deciding factor. We could use those guys.

I'm sure there are others behind the scenes that we'll never know about.

This defense was ranked 116th in the nation last year because of the roster not the scheme. They are where they are this year because of the scheme not the roster. Once the roster catches up and we have depth the scheme is going to give opposing offenses nightmares. Quitcherbitchin

Did you read my next post where I said I want dno to succeed? If not try reading all of a threads posts before you come in throwing jabs..

Negged

I read your stupidity. I've heard it before. Yeah, yeah, yeah... you want coach d to succeed blah, blah, blah. Maybe Golden will change things up and go after _________. The flavor this week is Bud Foster. Maybe Jimmy Johnson will come aboard if Al asks him nicely enough.

Lol getting your jimmies rustled about what fans say on a internet message board?? Go outside and take a deep breath bruh... Last time I checked we don't make any decision on these matters.. All just wishful thinking

Jimmies rustled? You're incapable of rustling a Jimmy. Your cliche BS won't change any of the stupid you've posted in this thread.

Once the defensive roster has the depth this scheme is going to be a nightmare for opposing offenses. Amazing how the agenda driven village idiots come out of the woodwork after a loss.

Bud Foster doesn't have a god**** thing over Coach D.

lol doth think anyone is agenda driven anymore. this D sucks and the scheme just doesn't work down here. time to move on and adjust to the talent we have or were gonan continue to be bad.

Al will at least wait until we have a legit D line til he makes a decision on coach D. That us our biggest hole and it's not even close. Ohh yea, and our ****ing dirt leg kicker! I would bench Goudis and have O'Donnel take over all kicking duties. Bosher did it.

Al will not fire his best friend. I would be willing to bet a lot of money on that.

well there is a guy on another thread saying he will put up as much as 5g's to that bet.

D'Onofrio may agree to resign, but Al will not fire him. No way.

People also don't realize that Golden has called from zones to be tighter, and for more man coverage, and D has said "We just need more depth on our zones, we need to keep it in front" which is what actually has burned us

Golden says we've been playing a lot more man. Whether that's true or not, I don't know, but it seems like it to my untrained eye.

👻🎎🐥🐮👯👎🙌👽😵😳

Would love to have him as our D coordinator? This guy is one of the best in the business. Always has a consistent top D and gets his players in positions to MAKE plays. He attacks and plays aggressive. This is what we are really lacking. I know a lot of it is the personnel but you can't tell me over the past 15 years Va Tech has had better athletes.

Get him and we win a title sooner than later.

He is THE best in the business and that is backed up by stats and facts for the past decade.

Golden made a comment a week ago that most of you seem to have missed, said he has spoken to Bud Foster about taking "another job" (read between the lines there if you want)

Anyway, Golden said Foster answered him that his family loves Blacksburg and he is happy where he is. So I doubt Foster is going anywhere. Not ambitious enough to want to take on a new challenge.

he can't fire him for running the defense he wants to run.. that would be ridiculous..

Lol exactly. People fail to realize this is Al's scheme.

It's not about the scheme, it's about execution. We have guys on this defense who have been in the system for three years and are not making improvements. That is coaching. I don't know how you get it fixed, but that's the challenge this team has to face

Get him a team that has a stadium and a fanbase that fills it.

Foster is an animal. A master of his craft. A true artist at the top of his game.

Sadly, I believe he's hanging around and set to take over for that old sack of bones when he retires soon.

I don't think so. Beamer has his son named "Associate Head Coach". He wants his son to eventually take over from what I've been hearing hence why Foster has been going on interviews every offseason for the last few years.

We actually have been TECHNICALLY playing more man after rewatching some of the games. The question is, what does it matter if you are playing straight man or zone if either way you insist that your CB's line up a constant 5-10yds off the ball? the underneath routes are going to eat you alive. Any 12yo worth his salt in the video game world would bring everything up ESPECIALLY against teams like VA Tech who can't move the ball on anyone.

Not defending Al or anything, but a head coach can change their defensive philosophy and it has happened, the question is if Golden is smart enough and not stubborn to do so

My ugh wasn't a knock on Foster. Foster is great.

I was ughing because people fail to realize D'Onofrio is here for the long haul. And even if he left we'd still run his scheme because it's Al's scheme.

if they do not win they will both be gone. Who is going to fund anybody who does not win? They got rid of Coker and he won a NC and played for another.
