Head Coach Candidates

Looked at Bryce Drew record, did pretty bad at Vanderbilt. Is there something else there?
The 2019 season for Vandy was supposed to be centered around Darius Garland, and he got injured and was out for the season in the opening minutes of the fifth game of their season. Once he was out, they didn't really have a good PG option and the offense cratered when they played anyone with a pulse.

When they had a healthy Garland, they showed some good signs. They were 4-0 with a win over Liberty (eventual 12 seed who won a game in the NCAA Tournament) and at USC (not a good USC team, but still a road win against a top 100 club).

Obviously you can point to roster construction on not having a good backup for Garland. From the first four games of the season, Drew wanted to play Garland 35-37 minutes a game.

Call Jay Wright offer him a sweet deal, if he says no call Pitino see what he says. He can do a quick turnaround coach for 3 years then retire.

Then Chris Jans would be a great hire.

Then go Will Wade!

I spoke with Rick. His reply, "Go Johnnies"

Kick the tires on another coach, because he aint leaving NY.

Mike Repole will pay that man anything to retain him.

Now if you want a solid ******* coach from the Big East, I suggest looking at Shaheen Holloway at Seton Hall. **** good coach, but seems to be loyal to The Hall. He turned down an offer from Louisville to stay, but money talks, and Seton Hall doesn't have the money Miami does for hoops.

Halloway hasn’t exactly been tearing it up this season

Thank NIL for that...

This season isn't indicative of his ability to coach and/or identify /develop talent.

His best player, Kadary Richmond (preseason All American, etc.) portalled to to Saint John's to get paid. The Hall couldn't compete with Saint John's in NIL, hence his departure. Nor could he attract top talent from the portal because of it. Money matters.

How about last season?

- Seton Hall got jobbed by the selection committee, only to win the NIT
- He performed well enough to be offered the Louisville HC position.

How about in 2022?

- He coached St. Peter's to the Elite Eight

Truth is Shaheen is extremely loyal to Seton Hall. This goes back to his playing days. He turned down offers from Blue Bloods to play in Newark.

Pretending he isn't a solid choice is laughable. Miami may be able to do better, but he is a really good coach.

Can’t hire a guy with a losing record in the year you’re hiring him. 6-12, 1-6… not good, even though I believe the Big East has been the best league in basketball the past few years.

Miami is not a place you just walk into and get money thrown at you in basketball. It took Jim and Chris years to cultivate financial support for basketball, and the next coach is going to have to put the work in to keep it going. If he couldn’t do it at seton hall I’m not sure there’s any reason to believe he could do it at Miami.

If he took St. Peter's to an Elite Eight, he can absolutely win at Miami.

The Hall got screwed out of an NCAA at-large last season; went on to win the NIT.

Again, Louisville (top 25) just offered him the HC position. That should tell you something about his pedigree.

He turned it down, because of his loyalty to The Hall.

Agree to disagree. That's fine. Just know I'd take him in a NY minute if he's available when Pitino retires.

No doubt he’s a good basketball coach. Unfortunately, in todays world - unless you’re at a school that has made an unqualified commitment to supporting the program with all necessary resources - being a good basketball coach isn’t enough. You gotta be a CEO and networker and fundraiser and facilitator.

At the end of the day they’re having almost as bad a season as we are… and our coach quit because of it. That’d be a heck of a leap to take and not the upward career trajectory that I’d be looking for.

IMHO, they are a better team than Miami.

If Halloway had the financial backing, The Hall would perform much better. I mentioned him because he is a solid coach that will thrive with proper NIL support.

Not sure who you guys are targeting / planning to target, but you’re going to have spend to compete.

100% agree. The problem is the coach has to drive the NIL for Miami basketball. There’s money to be had, but the coach has to go get it. The AD support for basketball is mediocre… it got much better under L but still isn’t close to where it could be with someone who is willing to continue to do the work that L started.

If Halloway is not doing that at Seton Hall, there’s no reason to believe he’d do it here.

Above Average offense and like legit an all time worst Defense out of a power program. Holy ****....

I see what you're saying. I have no clue what he's doing over there in that department.

Who do you think is a good candidate to replace L?

Rick Pitino 🤣🤣

Seriously it’s a tough question. Just a guy who can coach is not enough. It either has to be somebody who brings so much credibility and respect that the money flows just because people want to be around him. Or it has to be a superbly talented up and coming comer who can coach, network, fundraise, and basically be HC/AD combo for basketball.

Within my circle of friends in the basketball industry, the Kimani Young name is coming up way too much for my liking. We can’t be thinking about handing over the keys to the program to what would be a first-year HC, can we? I’m sure Pitino and Hurley are pushing for the guy but c’mon!!! Would make much more sense to let Kimani gain some valuable experience at a mid major level. Let him prove his mettle there before giving him the head job of an ACC school.

Rad could get Kimani for less than a big name established HC like Jans. I'm sure that's a factor if indeed Young is being considered.

That being said, he probably could get Caputo for a similar figure. Or a guy like Turner or Wardle. Young will certainly generate more buzz but is he the best choice?
