I'm an advocate of Al Golden. Even if he doesn't bring this team back to greatness, I appreciate his loyalty to the "U" and to the players even after the administration deceitfully failed to mention the Shapiro scandal -- but ultimately, I am already sold on his ability to have Frank Beamer-Like Results i.e. perpetual 10 game winning seasons and the occasional BCS game -- here's to hoping he can take us a step further...

If you don't have faith in this regime, root for whoever wins the national championship in any given year -- the rest of us are sick of your constant complaining and whining.

B.S. Al has done great things and sticking by us is one of them. Sure the administration sukered him -- we can fire them too if you like. But I graduated from Suntan U. The chicks by the pool were great but after graduation the degree meant little until it became THE U! Don't want no Frank Beamer. Heck I don't want Bobby "I only one two NC.s in 30 years" Bowden. Win 2 NCs in five years, leave some studds, and move on to NFL is fine with me. If we are going to be VT, then shut the program down and be done with it. We need to be THE U! Howard was the last throw of the dice. They came up 7. We cannot survive with okay teams; we need in the hunt teams and must play for title every couple years at least. Otherwise, we will be the Harvard of the South but only as to sports. Does Harvard still have a football team -- or better does anybody care? Couple more years of this and we will be drawing 5,000 for games.

Suntan U was an amazing place for fun, education not so much and at best football was fair at best. Under the circumstance of the quality of the education, getting back to the level we all want is more difficult and may not be able to be realistically achieved. The purpose of the U is education, football is a sidebar and that will never change as today that piece of paper means something.

For me its quite simple. If coach Golden doesnt make a change at D coordinator this offseason and dorito runs his same back peddling scheme next season then I will begin to call for Golden's firing...repeatedly.

My issue with Golden is purely his coaching.

He's a great recruiter. A great CEO. A fantastic face for the program.

But he continues to trot out an absolutely pitiful defense for the 3rd year running. Something needs to change in that regard.

So great CEO's churn out ****** products? ID rather have a ****** CEO with a great product!! Hold up what did I do there?

there is no argument left for the player vs coaching debate wrt the defense. it is obvious that the defense is getting poorly coached and constantly worked by opposing OCs. that will not change no matter who is on the depth chart

I'm sorry but when you have the 2 worst defenses in school history (not sure about this year's but it was pretty much just as bad as last year), then there is a major coaching problem.

Why is everyone's solution to fire Donofrio? How about we give the guy a chance to play guys they recruited for the system they want to implement instead these jags that they felt compelled to play because how they stuck with the team and were good sports through it all.
And why are we not allowing them the opportunity to correct the mistakes they've made. 3 years in and I'm sure they learned a lot. Golden and Donofrio are not dumb contrary to popular belief. Maybe they came in a little to sure of themselves and their system that worked for them at Temple but maybe they also have it in them to tweak it some.

Are you serious? 3 years is MORE than enough time to field a decent defense. The performance of the defense of the last 3 years is unacceptable. Giving up multiple 500+ yard games to mediocre teams is completely unacceptable. I'm surprised he's even lasted this long. D'No needs to go.

Our problem is clearly defense, and we know who's been in charge.

Golden represents the University well, speaks well, and I believe is a good man. But Bobby Bowden kept his non-performing Coordinator (son) and it led to the ouster of Bobby.

Sure wouldn't like to see that happen at the U, but the numbers don't lie, and if Golden can't read the numbers, then he's not as bright as I thought.

Bobby was fired 3 years after he let Jeff Bowden go. If the Nolies had been able to do better than 7-6 in 2 of those final 3 years, Bowden might still be around.

In order to fire a living legend, it takes about that long. The talk of BB "retiring" started in earnest when he was forced to fire his boy.

Actually it can get better. There is no problem with the underlying defensive scheme. The problem is D'Onofrio is trying to employ it with the wrong personnel. I don't support his stubborness to maintain the scheme he wants despite the lack of quality, athletic players to employ it. It's wrong. But to say the defense could not be successful with the right players is incorrect.
