Golden on the offensive line

less of this zone and stretch running and more downhill power running

I would love to see that. Our run plays take too long to develop. Hit that **** up in there at a hundred miles per hour. Let Duke get a small crease then just gash people downhill.

We have a smash mouth type OL.. If they need to move someone off the ball they can. (big boys) It seems like we struggle with zone/stretch blocking. Problem is we have a zone back & lack a power one.

Before anyone tells me how awful our short yardage run is believe me I know.. If you look though most the time we have guys pulling, etc. Fire off the ball & create a new LOS.

The thought that Duke can't be a downhill back has become a prevailing myth

It's truly nonsense isn't it? Duke is at his best when he's slashing downhill.

Maybe it has to do with them being PUSSIES! They did well the first quarter then got intimidated for the rest of the game. They kept letting the DL talk **** and take cheap shots at Duke without any repercussions. The only player on offense i saw getting in the face of the DL and LBs was Duke. Our OL is suppose to fight those fights for him and protect him. I dont give a **** if we get penalized but we need to man up and start some **** when necessary.

Crazy but our greatly criticized DL played big boy football and our heralded OL played like lil ****es

I never got why some fans think that are Oline is hearalded. I haven't seen a good oline from us for years.

Both of these are complete and utter bull****.

The first is typical Internet machismo that if the players DID react they way they say wanted would be on here having a ****** stroke that their penalty potentially costed us the game!!

The second is lazy critical fan fall back when all it takes is a few quick clicks to bring up the numerous preseason articles and mentions that counts the OL as one of the strengths of the team.

It's possible but not likely that we will ever have a more talented top 6 OL at Miami than we do this year. If we can't excel there with both the run game and pass pro then yikes.

I'm with this guy. Are all of you saying there aren't at least 4 NFL players in that rotation?

True but one of those guys is only a soph and only one of those plays inside(LInder). I'm still on the fence with Felancio. We are very good in pass protection, especially at the tackle position. We just struggle against the better teams in run blocking. Yes we will have our breakdowns there against the bad and so so teams but overall out run game is effective. It only gets exposed against DLs that are, well littered with NFL talent.

So a bunch of new(productive) bodies at DT and Jethro is a forgotten target. But we keep trotting out the same group of OL and expect different results?

Maybe they just aren't as good as they were hyped.

What do you mean by "as good as they were hyped?" The players?

Basically. Or the unit as a group for whatever reasons. When its the same guys over and over again "underachieving" at some point it just becomes "achieving" doesn't it?

We ran for 300 yards against FAU they said. Our run blocking is fine they said.

I was talking about perception more than anything. I think Duke can do it all. Would be nice to have a big body softening up that defensive belly though.

True. I think it's a matter of getting our guys in the right positions, coaching them up, and allowing them to develop in those positions. I think too that we need to help them out by using more of a power running game rather than stretch plays.

FWIW its a good group with some solid NFL talent on it. But when your mid round NFL talent goes up against 1st round NFL talent, I guess the results should he obvious.

I do think Flowers is our lineman with the biggest upside, and it doesn't help that our weakest link is at center.

Still at what point does the blame fall on the players?

I think it was just being too predictable. Even in early downs, in shotgun, UF was just blitzing the opposite side of where Duke was positioned because when given the hand off he would run straight into blitzing DB

Its the reason most running teams and even power teams like Bama really gravitated towards the pistol because with the back still behind the QB you dont tip off what direction the run is going like in shotgun. Majority of time if the back is to right of qb, that rb will be given handoff going left. We did it enough where UF would just slant their line and blitz a safety and we are basically running into teeth of defense.

Good point, not the most difficult thing for a D to plan for.

The Soph has like 10+ games under his belt. He's not the "young sophomore" that most OLinemen usually are at this point. He's also extremely talented. I think Feliciano plays in the NFL. I don't know how long or if he'll star, but I think he's an NFL lineman.

You take two Tackles - one with 10+ games and the other a senior - who likely end up as 1st or 2nd round draft picks, you add in two interior linemen who will likely play in the NFL, you sprinkle in a highly experienced Center (albeit with size limitations), and you have two highly experienced rotational players (one who has a slew of starts under his belt)...

That's a good situation. Whether or not they get results is also up to what the coordinator is asking them to do and what their unit coach is doing with them so they can execute.

Maybe I'm just talking out of my *** but you think there's any connection with Morris avoiding the middle of the field and our weakness at center? I know QBs hate middle pressure for obvious reasons but I don't know, seems plausible.

Or maybe that's a huge reach?

our offensive line played fine.

our run blocking is fine.

if the majority of tackles against our run game is coming from their secondary, that's not on our o line. that means they're bringing people up to stop the run and daring us to pass.

that's what happened on saturday. they dared us to pass, hoping to create turnovers, but we continued to play it safe since we got the early lead.

Maybe on certain plays, but I think, up to this point in his career, he just hasn't made a lot of second reads. The middle of the field is a cluster**** of zone defenders and is probably the area that requires the most anticipation. I'm holding out hope he breaks out of that for the rest of the year and shows what was being talked about in fall camp. I really don't care too much what he does against Sav. St. or completely inept defenses. We already know he can smoke those.

He's got one more step before he becomes the QB everyone hopes for and has predicted. Even if he doesn't, I just hope he plays mistake-free so we can be in ball-games.

Playing it safe is something that Golden does that I'm not completely cool with. And when he did decide to take a chance against UF, Morris threw what could have been a devastating interception.

I agree in general but I think playing "fine" is less than what people hoped/expected from a group like this coming into the year.

I'm not speaking definitively on these guys, don't get me wrong.

Dead on.

When watching the game, had Duke merely juked, and then reversed from the direction the play called for, he would have had wide open fields. We were telegraphing our direction of runs, and they were all over them.

Kill yourself. (for those first 2 sentences)

I wasn't knocking Flowers, as he is probably our most talented OL we got, but the statement was rather about the fact he is far from a finished product. Linder will get drafted, SH obviously after that its kinda hazy to be honest with you. Bunche is a great swing guy but his play lately has questioned whether he can be an effective guard, cause while he is an adequate tackle in college, he isn't one at all in the pros. Felancio is one of those guys that lets wait and see. I think he is solid but I just don't see what you see thus far. He is a kid that was asked to play earlier than he should have and surprised by holding his own, but hasn't really improved all that much since then. We will see, still a long season to go but the early returns say we as a fan base, myself included, overrated these guys.

I don't think he was happy with that decision by Coley to air that out on 3rd & 25.

He was very complimentary of Coley after the game, but I think he referenced that play as one that probably shouldn't have been called.
