FYI ... Duke ...

DL recruiting has been horrid and that is the reason our D is trash right now.

2009:

Dye ( mid 4 star) - couldn't cut at DE moved to TE
Green (low 3 star) - came in as a LB, knee injuires have taken away the little explosion he had
Porter (high 3 star) - hasn't been healthy his entire career
Robinson 9 (low 4 star) - couldn't pass a conditioning test until this year

2010 (this defensive class as a whole is what is killing us):

Perry (high 3 star) - was extremely raw coming out, high risk, high reward type, just never clicked for him
Tallman (low 3 star) - was a reach to begin with and is no longer on the team
Jeff Brown (2 star) - another reach, rape and off the team
Glenn (4 star) - never made it to campus
Delmar Taylor (low 3 star) - reach, never made it to campus

2011:

Chickillo (high 4 star/5 star) - in a perfect world he would have shirted last year, forced to be the anchor of our DL as a true sophomore
Grimble (4 star) - I thought he was overrated coming out. Lacked explosion for DE and is too small for DT. USC just gave him to us because they knew he wasn't that good
Pierre ( low 3 star) - kid would be at Temple if we didn't hire Golden
Williams (high 3 star) - the fact that he can't see the field right now says a lot, the crazy thing is this is actually what you want from your young DL if you had elite upperclassmen
Corey King (low 3 star) - kid was headed to FIU
Smith (unranked) - no other D1 offers

Please tell me any coach that can coach around this. Now add in the fact that you have freshman playing a ton because basically the entire 2010 defensive class is gone:

Devonte Davis
Jeremy Davis
Keion Payne
Tallman
Brown
Glenn
Taylor
Nelson
Williams
Latwan

The ones left:

Perry (moved to TE)
Rodgers (JAG)
Cain (JAG)
Cornelius (JAG)
Gaines (JAG)

Just a complete whiff of a class by Shannon. Just looking back (not counting Latwan and Seantrel who were gift wrapped to us well after NSD) we closed with Gaines, Cain, Cleveland, Brown and Taylor during that last month. All 5 were reaches. 2 never played a down and the other 3 are complete JAGs. Again no DC in the country can recover from this as fast as some of you claim.

Just so I'm clear on the logic here, we would be a top 20 defense with Randy here? And since Porter is our best player on D, its safe to assume we would be much higher with him out there?

Yup. Ol Blue ain't coming back, just gotta let him be

is in a boot. (Glad to make your morning.) Ben Jones is also banged up and was on crutches (for the 2 people that care about this).

Also, Tano and I watch the live games together and I think he's remarked at every game that "we have a ****ing linebacker [Shayon Green] playing d end." I kind of disregarded him, because at least in pads and on tv and from my vantage point at Joe Robbie, Shayon seems fit for the job.

Well, I saw him today w/o pads and you know what, "we have a ****ing linebacker playing d end."

I don't want this thread to devolve into whether the defense's ails are a result of scheme (D'Onofrio) or players. That topic has been discussed ad nauseum on this board. But, next time you wonder why our D-line is getting mauled at the point of attack and being pushed back 5 yards, and you wonder why we can't stop the run game, just remember, "we have a ****ing linebacker playing d end."

This isn't intended to disparage Green. Dude is seemingly a hard worker and giving 100%. But, he should be at LB. Physically, he's closer to E. Johnson and Perryman, than he is to Chick.

We have too many players on this team that were recruited at one position, and moved to the "next weight class," so to speak. For example, we recruit TEs to play OL (Cory White), DBs to play LB (Cornelius, Armbrister), LBs to play DE (Green, Cain), and so forth and so on. (And I'm sure I'm missing some other examples.) Sure, it works on occasion (Eric Winston), but when you talk about fielding a physical team, this isn't optimal. I think with Golden this **** is done - as it appears he prefers a big team - but this is hampering us right now.

THIS!!!

dont forget our start DT didnt have a single D1 offer and only got one after he lost 30lbs to come here

Porter would make a huge impact. Him and smith playing together would stuff the run very well. Porter would have made a big difference in the Notre Dame game and K State.

Pass rushing would still be a concern but Porter comands a double which could possibly open up lanes for other players.

Porter has played a two gap scheme all his life so he understands and plays in this scheme very well. This season was the first time he ever played the 3 tech position which is a one gap assignment. He talked about how he struggled early with the one gap assignment because he did not know how to uses his hands and overcome having short arms
