A few things on Frenk and this situation:
- This isn't really all that surprising. The destination is the surprise, but him leaving UM isn't. Nobody and I mean NOBODY inside the school thought his contract would be extended.
- The BOT soured on Frenk a long time ago. If it wasn't for Covid, he would've been gone awhile back. I've said it before on this board, but I know for a fact that a very prominent member of the BOT remarked that Frenk's hire was a big mistake, in retrospect. This was from a shaker and mover on the board, who's words weren't just representative of his own opinion.
- Frenk's presidency was considered, by and large, a failure. Yes, UHealth started making big money (not really due to him though) and our med program is stellar, but the rest of the school languished. The law school is an unmitigated disaster. Non-STEM programs have gone the wayside. When Frenk assumed the presidency we were considered the best or close to second best academic program in the state. Now we're at third running miles behind UF and close behind FSU.
- Frenk had minimal influence on sports. One good thing about him is that he knows what he doesn't know. He knew he was completely out of his depth when it came to college athletics. In this area, he's deferred heavily to Rudy Fernandez and a handful of other BOTs.
- I've heard way more through the grapevine about Rudy than I have of Joe Echevarria. That doesn't mean I haven't heard stuff though. The impression from people I've spoken with, that have worked close with Echevarria, is that he's a proven leader and is extremely competent. I've heard bad things about Rudy (albeit not all bad), but I've heard nothing bad about Echevarria (albeit I've heard less about him). This is a guy that spent almost four decades at Deloitte, was CEO for four years, and serves on a bunch of boards (New York Mellon and Pfizer). Reading through his biography, he also has major political connections, far more then Frenk ever had.
- Don't be surprised if UM ends up removing the "interim" title from Echevarria. I was told awhile back by someone who would know that UM has been intentionally moving from the traditional academic model of leadership to a more corporate model. This is a guy that fits that bill perfectly. Not to mention he's served in various other high profile positions in the University, and is well liked with the people that make the decision. I think the school will conduct a formal search, but if he wants it he'd be a major candidate for the role.
