MEGA Frenk Out - Who Next?

A few things on Frenk and this situation:
  1. This isn't really all that surprising. The destination is the surprise, but him leaving UM isn't. Nobody and I mean NOBODY inside the school thought his contract would be extended.

  2. The BOT soured on Frenk a long time ago. If it wasn't for Covid, he would've been gone awhile back. I've said it before on this board, but I know for a fact that a very prominent member of the BOT remarked that Frenk's hire was a big mistake, in retrospect. This was from a shaker and mover on the board, who's words weren't just representative of his own opinion.

  3. Frenk's presidency was considered, by and large, a failure. Yes, UHealth started making big money (not really due to him though) and our med program is stellar, but the rest of the school languished. The law school is an unmitigated disaster. Non-STEM programs have gone the wayside. When Frenk assumed the presidency we were considered the best or close to second best academic program in the state. Now we're at third running miles behind UF and close behind FSU.

  4. Frenk had minimal influence on sports. One good thing about him is that he knows what he doesn't know. He knew he was completely out of his depth when it came to college athletics. In this area, he's deferred heavily to Rudy Fernandez and a handful of other BOTs.

  5. I've heard way more through the grapevine about Rudy than I have of Joe Echevarria. That doesn't mean I haven't heard stuff though. The impression from people I've spoken with, that have worked close with Echevarria, is that he's a proven leader and is extremely competent. I've heard bad things about Rudy (albeit not all bad), but I've heard nothing bad about Echevarria (albeit I've heard less about him). This is a guy that spent almost four decades at Deloitte, was CEO for four years, and serves on a bunch of boards (New York Mellon and Pfizer). Reading through his biography, he also has major political connections, far more then Frenk ever had.

  6. Don't be surprised if UM ends up removing the "interim" title from Echevarria. I was told awhile back by someone who would know that UM has been intentionally moving from the traditional academic model of leadership to a more corporate model. This is a guy that fits that bill perfectly. Not to mention he's served in various other high profile positions in the University, and is well liked with the people that make the decision. I think the school will conduct a formal search, but if he wants it he'd be a major candidate for the role.
Football wise, I don't know the immediate effects of this move. It could help us in being more aggressive, in that Frenk was way more passive and non confrontational then the guy now steering the ship (for the time being at least). Echevarria, after all, was an important advocate in investing in the FB program. Nevertheless, we'll have to wait and see.

Pretty good write up. I’ll tell you something negative about Joe, he’s an ***. Not that he’s a bad president/CEO….but he’s a **** to deal with. That said, Frenk had nothing to do with athletics and that has and will remain all Joe and Rudy.

Doesn’t seem like a normal presidential departure given the fact that he’s leaving immediately and it’s less than a year before UM’s centennial anniversary.

Good riddance… he was beyond terrible.

It’s time to throw Frenk’s throne on a bonfire, cut the Centennial Celebration budget in half, and shift that money to a search firm. Plus an environmental company to steam clean the president’s house. Julio probably walks around there like Winnie the Pooh, sitting his bare *** on the sofa while he watches a Real Housewives marathon…

I was really starting to relate to the guy until you got to Real Housewives.

That's interesting. Is he *** in the sense that he's a jerk, or rather that he's the typical high level executive with a big ego and extremely high expectations from those who work under him?

I was told pretty recently (as in weeks ago) that Frenk's was looking forward to and was hoping to stay on through the centennial. He knew he wasn't getting renewed, so he took the best option he had.

Sorry I forgot to put (pause) in there.

Wonder if we’ll get UCLA to give us a credit for the fur coat refrigerator the university spent a couple hundred grand putting into his house for his wife.

How much money were we spending on athletics and specifically, football, under Shalala?

Forget Barry Alvarez. Why wasn’t Randy Shannon given the proper resources if she cared so much? Why did he allegedly have to go with plan C coordinators like Patrick Nix?

Actions speak louder than words. I could care less what she said during class.

Larry Coker was given (by Donna, not Tad) a top 10 salary after he won a a title.

Randy Shannon hired Nix BECAUSE HE HAD NO COACHING TREE.

My flight got delayed to 10 pm, so I’m available to crush all fake myths.

Probably both, but he’s arrogant and talks down to people. Like most his attitude is very different in public or when around people of power.

Hopefully, El Herald will be able to snap a picture of Julio from behind. Then you will clearly see one of Manny Kadre’s boots lodged deep inside of Frenk’s ******.

My prediction? You'll board, sit at the gate for 2 hours, your flight crew will reach their hours threshold, they'll tell you a new crew is coming in from Atlanta, they won't make it, and your flight will get cancelled.

Distinct possibility. Thank goodness I got into the Centurion Lounge on my original departure time.
