MEGA Frenk Out - Who Next?

The fact that our fanbase continues to blame Dr. Shalala for the OB, ignoring the fact that the ignored a voter referendum, and engaged in widespread corruption to ace the University out of the OB, and open up the parcel for the Marlins is mind boggling. Once again, in case you didn't know: Dr. Shalala had NOTHING to do with the OB situation. The voters in Miami approved a bond to renovate the OB, the City dragged its feet and when the Marlins picked up steam for their building, gave Miami a lowball estimate on the renovations, knowing full well no rational adult would take that offer, opening the path for the Marlins.

It happened on her watch. I don't remember her being out in the public campaigning for Miami's cause. She rolled over, and that makes her weak and ineffective at best.

But OK, let's not belabor that. Let me just give you the benefit of the doubt and we'll pretend it's not her fault at all. Tell me this then...

It's March 3rd, 2008, and you're Donna Shalala. You've just lost your storied stadium, even though it was not at all your fault. What do you do about it from there? Do you take it lying down?

I'll tell you what Donna did.... absolutely not a god**** thing. She took it and rolled over. Did she use the momentum and get us a new stadium? Nope. Did she sue the city? Nope. Did she talk about it in the media so that the people who were responsible would be accountable? Nope. All she did was sign a 30+ year lease at Dolphins stadium and here we are, to this day, with no field of our own, and no justice. Something was taken from us and we got nothing in return. And we're just supposed to accept that because she taught a class and some students liked her and she was a nice lady.

What would you have had her do?

I should have specified athletic department but I figured that part was common knowledge.

Which is why I clarified right off the bat. I’m not blaming you for that, although most of your posts are vague horse**** that you attempt to explain after the fact.

Still doesn’t explain you brain-dead rhapsodizing about how much the hillbillies and cornholes loooove aTm and Nebraska.

The charisma and energy of a doorknob. I remember the first time I heard him give a speech. You would have found more energy in a cemetery than in that room that night.
A lot of people knew he was doomed from the moment they met him. He isn't a dynamic person, and you need that in the role. Maybe at a school like Harvard, where you can be a pure academic, but not at a place like Miami.

If I were in her shoes, I would have fought. Hard. Get on TV, get in the papers, and tug at the heartstrings of the people of the city talking about the historic site that is the Orange Bowl, all the great history there, etc. I would take the city/county to court over the referendum. Sue the Marlins. Hold up the demolition for years tying them up in court.

And then I would fundraise on the back of that. "Save our stadium" is a nice rallying cry.

And if at the end of that, you end up losing, you take the goodwill and the money and you build a new stadium using the money you've fundraised and whatever settlement you get from the city.

One thing I would NOT have done is just take it lying down and sign a lease with Stephen Ross or wayne huizenga or whoever the **** owned Dolphins stadium at the time.

I hate FSU but Miami could take a page from that book from time to time... sometimes you gotta stir **** up and fight back. Miami was criminally quiet and complacent during that era and it cost us something we can never get back or replace.

I’m not mad at you.

Your words sound awesome.

She DID campaign for Miami voters to approve the referendum.

But beyond that, I’m not sure how she could have “gotten us a stadium”.

It seems simple. It is not. Not one single UM president has “gotten us a stadium”, even though George Merrick faves us the land to do so.

How would you rate the UM president who sold our stadium dirt (now Lake Osceola) to the guys building the Rickenbacker Causeway?

So unlike Rell you don't actually have an explanation. Sounds good.

She did.

The people voted.

And then the corrupt politicians, the Latin Builders Association, and Samson/Luria ignored the public expression of support and they consummated their back-room deal.

We're good, no doubt. It's just a friendly debate at this point... I mean the milk has already been spilled. The Orange Bowl is gone, Donna Shalala is gone... **** it's nearly 20 years in the rear-view at this point.

To answer your question.... I mean, sad as it is to say, I don't think Miami has every had a good university president, at least not as long as I've been alive. Certainly not Tad Foote, Donna Shalala (IMO of course), or Julio Frenk. Miami has accomplished the things it has in spite of its leaders, not because of them.

I would love to see us, for once, get a real visionary in that seat who can take the amazing potential that Miami has and LEAD. Make us great. That includes the football team. I don't care what anyone says, football is a hugely important part of the university's tradition and DNA, and a great university leader is going to see that and do something about it.

So ****** Shalala was followed up by even ****tier Frenk. Sounds like our football/baseball coach hiring. One ****** hire followed by a ****tier hire.

Then sue. Fight. Tie them up in court for years. Get a stay on the demolition while it's ongoing. Talk to the media about the historic Orange Bowl, all the super bowls and national championships. What the historic building means for the city.

Make it an issue. A very public issue. Fight it politically, and fight it legally. Fight it financially.

If there are shady deals going on, the cure for that is to shine a bright *** light on it.

the commissioners who approved the deal were paid off by Samson. also the county would have never built UM a stadium. DS tried to get a combined FIU/Miami stadium at tropical but FIU wanted their own on campus stadium instead.

Seemed like a real nice guy who had a very laissez-faire attitude about things.

Hopefully for the alums they get someone to justify the expense of going here. I know athletics isn't really the top priority for a president, but it would be nice if part of the new president was a fire breathing dragon who demanded excellence on whatever field.

I see you found my joke offensive. I've made the same joke about Rudy and his resume/"affiliations"

I dont find it offensive. I think there's no place for politics on this board. idc what the new president does outside of turning around the school academically. it's a disaster esp at what it currently costs.

I hope the new president turns academics around

Look, I do not disagree with you, in theory.

But we were not an equity partner, we were a tenant.

And the **** new tenant was the Marlins. We lose that battle 101 times out of 100.

I hate it. I hate the Marlins. I hate Luria. I hate Samson.

But those ****ers cut up the body in the dark. No witnesses. No warning. No evidence. We know what happened, but Donna couldn’t stop that freight train.

And for the record, while El Herald was powerful enough to bring down Gary Hart in ‘88, they are pretty powerless in this millennium.
