Fernando Mendoza

Even though Ward wasn’t an “eval” we’ve gone after a QB once in the portal and hit a grand slam. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt here until proven otherwise

I kid.

I’m just not to the point of giving Indiana benefit of the doubt yet lol. Same thing happened when FSU wanted DJU last year, and big surprise, he still sucked. (I would take Mendoza over Emory, to be clear. It’s the allocation of funds that even makes it a discussion imo)

As for Karnley, you serious? I don’t remember which of the threads it was in since they’re all so **** off subject now lol, but yeah most people wanted zero to do with him. Especially when his PFF grades and some highlights of him getting cooked got posted.
Cignetti's staff is very solid with evals IMHO. Say what you want about IU belonging in the playoff, but he just got IU there playing a B1G schedule primarily using 13 kids he recruited to James Madison along with some portal pickups.

I think the current CIS narrative is Mendoza is jonesing to come to Miami (because any offensive portal kid that doesn’t want to come here is clearly an idiot) but the Miami staff is too stupid to bring him in.
I'd def be bummed if miami didn't kick the tires on him. I think he's a solid qb with a ton of starting experience and he doesn't turn the ball over. Emory is a question mark. Bring mendoza in to compete with Emory. Let the best man win. Doesnt seem likely though. Hopefully the spring will have some decent qb options

A year from now some of you will also try to say you never said he was a statue and the next QB who can’t move unless he’s running in a straight line is totally different, same as Will Rogers.

I never said Mendoza was a statue, though I freely acknowledge he is not as mobile as Ward.

As for last year, the other QB I hoped that we would recruit (assuming Ward went into the NFL draft) was Kyle McCord.

It seems Mendoza stock and public perception has raised a lot since Arnold, Moss, Mensah, etc have dropped off the board.

His 44 sacks (#1 in the country) with his average time to throw being 2.5 seconds...scares me and gives me reason to pause. I'd have to look way deeper into this (is he missing open reads, are his wrs so bad they are never open?, etc).

Mendoza isn't high up there on my list, but if the option is blindly trusting Emory, then you absolutely take Mendoza.

I am curious, how would yall rank these random qbs for Miami?

Mendoza
Ewers
Beck
Avery Johnson
Rocco Becht
Julian Sayin
Air Noland
Josh Hoover
Sawyer Robertson

I was at Ransom from 94-97 (football seasons). We played Palmer every year and we were 3A. Our district was us, Coral Shores, Marathon and Archbishop Curley. We played 4A teams like Gulliver and Belen and 2A teams like Florida Christian, Dade Christian, Palmer and Westminster Christian and Miami Country Day.
Okay they may have changed the classifications after I graduated. My last season was actually '93 and I couldn't play in the Oar game because I blew out my knee the week before at Dade Christian. I remember the '94 game at Ransom and it was pretty lopsided. My senior year was the last time we won it for a lot of years.

I know Mario flipped a player from the NFL before, but taking away Darnold from the Vikings was not an option this year.

Maybe we can try for Mahomes in the next portal window.

With you on McCord. I remember someone here saying they’d take Emory over McCord which was….something.

Regardless of ALL THIS. My point has never been that Mendoza sucks. I think he’s fine. My main skepticism is that he’s good enough to lift a team that needed superhuman efforts to win 10 games and lost a ton of skill production, and if bringing him in was going to put a dent in the NIL budget that would prevent us from bringing in the necessary supporting cast I’d spend it elsewhere, personally. But I also have literally zero insight into what that looks like, I just know big numbers were getting tossed around for him.

I know 96 we came into the game the game 8-1, ranked around 5th in the state and thought we were going to be absolutely destroy you guys. We scored on the first play of the game and then didn't score the rest of the game. It was cold, raining and windy and we won 7-6. We beat Cardinal Newman in the playoffs and then lost to Frostproof and Travis Henry in the second round. He had like 250 yards when they pulled him at halftime.

I remember that game. I was on the sidelines as an assistant. Yea we were on the RE1 yard line and ran out of time before the half or we would have taken the lead. How do I remember this stuff?
