Most head coaches were coordinators but they’re not all still coordinating their side of the ball still. Nick Saban and Kirby Smart aren’t calling their defenses.
There’s advantages and disadvantages to having a CEO type of coach. On the bad side, you have to trust he’ll make the right coordinator hires and if he does, it’s only a matter of time before the coordinator leaves for a promotion. On the positive side, you won’t get stuck with a system that may not be effective because the head coach is glued to HIS system. The best coaches know when to step aside and let the assistants do their thing.
