DC Candidates

We don’t need a great recruiter type guy. We need and X and O, proven DC.

NIL is handling the recruiting portion for the most part and then throw in the portal.

Mario needs to get this right
Disagree a tad. Yes recruiting doesn’t matter like it used to but it still matters some. Relationships will always have some meaning. Especially hiring somebody that’s from a different area or part of the country. It allows you to get kids to listen that normally wouldn’t have taken you serious in their recruitment if not for that connection.

100%.. it “doesn’t matter” if our package is substantially better than someone else’s and the kid is just chasing the bag. But clearly that didn’t work with innis and Jj.

If the bag is equal or close, kids still going to go to the program that he has better relationships with/ feels like he can get developed more (Pickett)

Johnny Nansen: https://texaslonghorns.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/johnny-nansen/3446

He fits the description: 25 years of coaching experience. 2 years calling plays at Arizona (2022 + 2023). Also Samoan so replaces Big Joe in that regard.

Can someone dive his 2-years as DC at Arizona?

Dude has extensive background in the west coach, basically worked for half of the old PAC12 schools

In 2022 (his first year as DC there) the Arizona defense was REALLY bad giving up 36ppg, ranked in bottom 10

But in 2023 there was a HUGE improvement, dropping to 21ppg and ranked 30th

In 2023 they were average to below average in terms of penalties a game, and average to above average in creating turnovers

He'd be LB coach too so I'd imagine D-Nic would be out. Assuming JT stays and coaches the DL, I'd like to see us hire dedicated CB and Safeties coaches.

If I had to say It’s the one out of left field , lacking a lot of play calling experience but plenty of football experience. They’re also a great recruiter. So it would make sense aligning with Mario. I guess we’ll see.
Understand Mario’s infatuation with recruiting, but less important in NIL age where money beats loafers. Don’t care about a great recruiter when need a play caller who can scheme and actually get players lined up.

Recruiting will always have a place. Having connection’s and relationships with kids from other parts of the country allows you to get interest that normally wouldn’t be afforded to you. Nil is the king now but it’s much easier to get to a negotiation stage if there’s a prior relationship. It’s like CFB’d version of networking. Just look at our latest hire. You don’t think there’s a method behind that ?

Recruiting is, and always will be important, but it is just not about high school kids anymore

Recruiting your roster
Recruiting high school
Recruiting the portal

Its all still recruiting

Programs have more slots for 'coaches' to assist with all of the legwork (or whatever they need these extra bodies for)

The marketability in South Florida should always beat out these SEC towns, so NIL value is an easy recruiting tool. Even if we aren't paying players as much as those schools 'up front', Cam Ward has shown that your play will prove your worth, and in all honesty, thats what we want.

We sure as **** do not want kids coming to UM and getting a big check and sucking ***....

But at the same time, all of that **** gets players in the door, we definitely need 'GOOD' coaching as well.

No question relationships remain important, but still believe NIL money has and will impact recruiting. Again, point is dont care if the DC hire is a great recruiter or not. Let’s get an adult in the room who can coach.
