DC Candidates

So woke just means Black?
Woke literally means that someone is informed, educated and conscious of social injustice and racial inequality. But certain news outlets and political faces use it as a negative narrative for progressives political movements.

“Stay woke” isn’t a new term. But I’m off my soap box back to football.

I appreciate your insider info. It just sounded like we could've made this happen, but Mario was making a decision that may not help the program. But, I have zero first hand knowledge, so I'm just forming opinions based on the different Cane pundits.

So, NYCANE (what part of NY?), what's your latest take on the DC position? As of this morning, what do you expect to happen and when?
if I had to guess, I would probably stick with Fitz.

JT will be the next DC book it.

You’d have to stupid to take this job. 3 coordinators have been let go with 2 of them being on defense.

Mario is going down the same path Golden went down. He didn’t have an extensive tree and no one from the outside wanted in. He had to promote guys like Hurlie Brown and Beard. Then get Randy Melvin from FIU.

That's my biggest concern. If a guy like Banks (I know that ship has sailed) wants to bring in his own guys, then either have the guys you want to retain, become analysts, or give them their walking papers. With 8 mill a year, MC can't afford to not be cutthroat with his staff.

I know I'm the only guy on CIS that believes this, but I still maintain if Golden had traded in Donuts for a real DC, he (Golden) might have grown into the position. I'm pulling for Mario, but he better get this next DC hire right or he will not survive it at the end of the 2nd season with the DC.

Now that we know how MC is going to handle that side of the ball. I don't mind if we rolled the dice and hired Fitz. He was a relatively successful HC, and unlike Offense, the defense is more about discipline and controlled aggression AND fundamentals, than it is about "outsmarting the other guy."

If it's gonna be Fitz, then let's roll with him and start building for the future. I think we could (and have done) do a lot worse than give Fitz the DC keys.

I worry about lack of play calling but the guy competed for big 10 titles and won 110 games at NW which is a borderline Ivy League school and in Chicago.

Yeah, if we end up with Fitz, it could be a lot worse. Fundamentals, disciple and aggression is far more important for that position than flashy or innovative approaches. I'm not so worried about calling plays since he was a HC in major CFB for a good while. If it's him, then fine. Let's go all in and start rebuilding this D.

Mario usually hires outside of his coaching tree. At FIU he hired OCs from Toledo (Satterfield) and New Hampshire (Cramsey) and DCs from UCF (Collins) and UConn (Todd Orlando), so I don't see the comparison with Golden's hiring decisions at UM.

we just need exactly what you said. Look at OSU, the combination and discipline. that's all we need not these Manny and guidry all blitz madden defenses.

That's my point. No one can. But I think I've offered the best evidence. Guidry was hired prior to those other moves were made. If one had to draw a conclusion, I think the most likely conclusion is that Guidry was in some way influential in Mario hiring the LB coach and promoting Taylor.
That is understandable, but nevertheless nothing but speculation.

If this is the case it’s a massive mistake on Mario’s part that could doom him long term. He needs a DC that’s fully empowered to change the defense too to bottom.

Yep, ended up being Richt's and Alf's downfall. HAnging onto guys for whatever reason. Mindboggling to me that Mario is willing to die on this hill to save guys on a side of the ball that was trrrble last year at the expense of missing out on a competent DC.

Coordinators always want to bring in their own guys. Something has to give. Mario won't have the luxury of a Guidry or Dawson hire where neither (IIRC) brought along 1-2 of their guys to bring in as position coaches.

As much as I want mel tucker or Jim leonard I'm fully expecting to end up with a hire like Andy Avalos, Tim Walton, Derrick Ansley etc
