Right. And I could be wrong about this — I readily admit that, but this smells like another Gattis situation to me.

Gattis “wasn’t happy,” either.

We “stole” him from Michigan. Come to find out, they let him go for good reason.

It’s always weird to see a coach who, on paper, has had success; and yet, he makes a lateral move to go somewhere else.

Maybe I’m an idiot. But something seems off here. I thought it was @JayCane20 who said he wasn’t sure about him.

Regardless, I appreciate you answering.
After what we just had? This guy would be a massive upgrade!

Sure. But it’s been well established that Mario is a below average head coach.

He needs to be surrounded by elite coordinators and players if we’re ever going to win a title.

Banks is solid. Is he good enough to help Mario overcome his deficiencies? That’s the important question.

Hopefully we'll find out soon if he gets the nod. His DBs played well so that would definitely help in DB recruiting and development, curious who he would bring as assistant's.

I like Tim Banks and he’s done well at Tennessee. Been going up in rankings year over year since he got there. When he got there they had nothing. Basically all of their LBs transferred out in 2021-2022. Lots of friends that are Tennessee fans have texted me saying they hope we take him.

2 concerns with him. 1) his secondary has been the issue since 2022. Improved a lot this year with transfer corners. He’s supposed to be a secondary coach/specialty. I’ve seen too much of that with Manny and the LBs and then Guidry and the DBs

2) Ties into 1 - under no circumstances can Willie Martinez follow him unless it’s as an analyst. Yes, he has ties to Miami. Horrible recruiter and reviews of his coaching ability are equally as horrendous.

If he wants to/can bring Ekeler and/or Rodney Garner… please do. Another highly regarded staff member that I would think he brings along would be Levorn Harbin “Coach Chop”. Instrumental recruiter and has gotten rave reviews since analysts have been allowed to assist coaching. His background is Valdosta State, Georgia Southern, Tuskegee, Louisiana, and has been an analyst at Auburn and Tennessee. Also was Auburn’s director of recruiting at one point. You definitely would want him to follow and coach on the DL.

I think they would avoid a bidding war and turn the defensive coordinator job over to William Inge (on the 2023 Washington staff and their current LB coach)

Reading through the thread a bit, and see some names that may bring a defensive prowess that would most likely improve our defense, but......

How or why did we end up with a coach that had 0 experience at the P4 level in the first place?

Was it difficult to lure a top notch D coordinator to coach here? If so, will we end up in a sim situation this time around? And what are the reason? Mario? Miami? What??

We need something so long as Mario has a massive buyout.

Why do their fans want us to take him? That scares me.

Just like @Genghis Cane said.

Something seems off here when people are wanting us to take their guy willingly.

Santucci was my choice before Banks name came up. I’ll stick to it but I may be swayed toward Banks, either by one of you here or by Mario just hiring him and seeing what happens overtime.

Tennessee fans are the most delusional fan base along with the Gators. But they’re salty about his big game defenses like Georgia and Ohio State. Allegedly calls off the dogs and goes into a more conservative shell. Tried to leave McCoy on an island with Jeremiah Smith but I don’t think they expected what they got. That’s a day 1 corner and Smith roasted him.

They were 67th in scoring D the year before him (under Derrick Ansley and Jeremy Pruitt), 97th year 1, then have been 30th, 22nd, and now 8th.

Reminds me a lot of Manny. Very aggressive 4 down front. Lots of press man. Pry at VT runs the same defense and Manny adapted his system to that at Penn State. Same thing Bob Shoop runs as well. All will look alike.

Shoop would be an excellent Safety/nickels coach that is familiar with the scheme.

And Mario as well... Surprised by some of their comments.

One even said "There is no comparison between Knoxville and Miami. Coaching for Cristobal is almost a sure fire path to a Head Coaching position. Miami would probably pay more too. If they make an offer, Banks would be crazy not to take it."
The cost of living pay increase is the difference but they don’t realize that. This is his contract at Tenn
