DC Candidates(post 2024 season)

Whole defensive staff needs to be gutted, and if that
Means JT so be it. All of the defensive line was terrible. Mesidor playing DT all season was laughable.
Hence why JT and Guirdy didn't get along. JT wants his DE's to rush the passer not stunt every down.

Initial thoughts:

I at least try to talk to Morgan Scalley (Utah). He is supposed to be the head coach in-waiting, but if Whittingham ends up prolonging this impending retirement and Scalley gets antsy, we should at least attempt a borderline ludicrous offer and see if there’s any shot. Get some Poly’s too.

I’d entertain the following:

Tony White (Nebraska) - bag, do it.
Pete Goulding (Ole Miss)
Tony Gibson (NC State)
Bryant Haines (Indiana)
Wes Goodwin (Clemson) - If Dabo falls apart
Tim Banks (Tennessee)
Bill Brechin (Miami OH)
Vince Kehres (Toledo)

I want to poach, not reach. But I do like these last two MAC guys a lot. Kehres was Mount Union’s HC and went 95-6 from 2013-2019. He knows how to win, two natty’s, son of an hall of famed. The guy can coach, and his defenses have bailed out Candle numerous times.
That's an interesting list. I'll pass on Golding as I've never liked him. Tim Banks is a no brainer and Wes Goodwin has done excellent work. Bryant Haines is an intriguing name. I'm not familiar with Brechin or Kehres.

What about Ryan Walter's? He's an excellent DC with HC experience and he's available as he just got fired from Purdue.

Ryan Walter’s would be an expensive home run. Are we spending enough money? Hired coordinators from Houston and Marshall. We’d be getting a fired hc from a p5 school. And he will have double digit suitors

Dawson and Ward both benefitted from each other, Ward was a day 3 pick before coming here, Dawson got a QB who could properly run his offense well, the dude can coach, he made crapbag Clayton Tune look good

TrumpyCane wants to know why this is hard for people to admit?
People want to feel vindicated. That's been the theme here since Saturday

Is Oklahoma keeping Venables? Id take him as DC

I think this is the type of hire Miami needs to make.

People can s*** on Mario, and it's deserved, but there's a system in which he works really well and that's when he brings in mature, seasoned coordinators that can run their sides of the ball autonomously. The guy needs to hire alpha coordinators who can recruit.

If you told me we somehow retained Dawson, got a Venables type, and landed a good QB in the portal I would have high expectations for next year.

He needs to hire a head coach of the defense. Same thing with other offensive head coaches. To a degree of course

Dude, saw this posted right after I wrote mine. I agree 1000000%

The posted "rumor" was about Lance guidry and Jason Taylor not getting along because of differing defensive philosophies. Nothing was said to imply it was Mario & JT not getting along.

Go Canes
This exactly, JT and Mario have a mutual respect for one another. JT puts in a lot of work on field and recruiting, his body of work isn't appreciated like it should due to the type of system Guidry runs.
This a a system issue and not a JT issue, he's frustrated as he should be because he knows a thing or two about what a successful defense is supposed to look like, he's a competitor and passionate about his job and these kids, so he has every reason to be ticked off.
Trust me we don't want to lose JT because we will feel the impact especially with these kids.

I'd be curious since they're on the older side how much Knowles and Kelley recruit in person. Because one of the knocks on Mario's that even the coordinators have equal recruiting responsibility as far as traveling. And I know some coaches don't really do it that way when it comes to the coordinator level they'll give coordinators less travel responsibilities sometimes

Not gonna be a popular name and people would burn it down on here because of where he comes from but an elite elite “football coach”

Vince Kehres at Toledo. Long time Mount Union D3 HC and went 95-6 there as HC and won 12 national championships on that staff.

They’ve been top 25 in yards per play each of the last 4 seasons. Between 13th and 23rd and 34th in PPG this year, 27th last year, and 29th 2 years before that.

Maybe not as DC but if you move on from Nicholson and need a LB coach/co-DC.

I believe JT is handcuffed by Guidry fascination with stunting DL every 3rd down lol

Nobody should feel safe including JT, What if the new DC wants to bring in his Dline coaches?

Well that's a possibility and I would hope JT could still be utilized in some sort of fashion. JT loves Miami and is content staying. It's not an end all if he was let go but it would definitely sting.
IMO I don't think he's going anywhere.
