DAY 9 PRACTICE THREAD - WITH DAY 9 INTERVIEWS

Dallas Crawford: "I usually don't think, I just react to the plays..."

I really think this is part of what we've been missing--guys with instincts who just know how to ball...and who, just as importantly, are put in a position to maximize their abilities. It's why I hope we get guys like Carter and Grace and Choc tons of PT this year.
but....according to many here, our coaches don't put our players in the best position to succeed. Is Dallas playing within the system?

We ran the same four-man front last year in passing situations. Only last year we were trotting out an undersized freshman and sophomore at the ends and Kamalu and Chickillo appear to have gained good strength this past offseason. Can't wait to see Chad Thomas work his way in there...

First group DLs running the 4-3 third down: McCord-Kamalu-Chickillo-Muhammad. Backing them up: Harris-Pierre-Thomas-Muhammad (again).

I've been screaming for that 4-3 alignment for a while. The backup crew is not half bad either.

I,m wondering if this 4-3 experiment may evolve into the surprise of the year. Staff must feel good about the DT position.

Is it too much to ask that this group doesn't stunt every time? Donofrio had some sort of boner for stunting aqm and mccord that he just couldn't quite satisfy despite running this play seemingly every....single....time they were on the field. The element of surprise was gone for this maneuver about midway through the second quarter of the UF game. Yet we continued to do it, over and over again, crashing our undersized and youthful DEs into the waiting mitts of offensive lineman that dwarfed them in size and experience.

did you forget about the play where McCord came screaming around the end and had a sack fumble to basically put the nail in the coffin against UF.

Tired of hearing about Grace's weight. He works out like a maniac and makes plays consistently in practice that only further reaffirms what we knew we were getting when we got him.

Gimme an undersized playmaker any ****ing day

Agree with you, this kid is going to be special. Kid makes plays and has elite speed.

I was a little worried about his size when he was a junior in high school. But at this point what other proof do you need? He makes plays seemingly every day. His weight is meaningless right now. Now you want to start talking. NFL and all that other crap, well then fair enough. Speed at LB is something we've sorely lacked. Explosiveness. Figs was supposed to be one of those guys. Grace is definitely one. Look at the impact Burgess has at Louisville. Grace is much better IMO. The weight thing is splitting hairs at this point.

Burgess should be on this team, that's on Al because they wanted bigger LB's.

Yeah...except for the fact that he was commited to UM for a while before he decided to go elsewhere.

Nope. That further bolsters my point. Despite the success of that play, Donofrio decided to stunt him inside the rest of the season. Let our speed guys do their thing on the edge in passing downs this season.

Having AQM run into guards and the center on nearly every 3rd down was one of the most frustrating things I have ever seen from UM.

I'd argue that watching him attempt to backpeddle and cover jitterbug slot receivers running 5 yards out patterns on him all day was even worse.

Other than that, our staff utilized him perfectly.

Agree. Stunts are nice, but we overdid it.

How many here will trash Golden if Kaaya starts and struggles? 75% of the posters? 80%?

easily 75%

There's nobody on this board that wants Golden gone more than I do ...and I can't speak for everyone...but I'd be a lot more upset with Golden if he starts Heaps.

I'd even go as far as to say I might give Golden somewhat of a free pass this year if he actually shows the testicular fortitude to make the right decision and go with Kaaya over the retread.

I think it will be a rough year no matter who starts. Also, let's not forget what the defense looked like last we saw it. Who starts at QB isn't even the biggest question mark on this team.

How exactly would it be showing balls to go with Kaaya? Much like yourself plenty of people would give him a pass if he went with Kaaya.

Your whole notion of the right decision is ***ed up anyway. The right decision is picking whoever is the better player for the Louisville game. Not for the future of the program. Not because one guy is the anointed one. Pick the guy who plays better in camp and the guy who you think gives you the best chance at winning. Thats doing the right thing.

I could give a rats *** who wins the job as long as it's the right choice.
And no reason to think that Golden and Coley won't arrive at the correct decision.
FUnny how cats that haven't watched a lick of practice except for the short clips posted here think they have it all figured out.

You'll be the first to destroy Golden if Kaaya struggles.

It's amazing the conclusions people jump to when reading practice reports and player/coach interviews. You might as well grab tea leaves and try to figure out the future.

Bank on it, Heaps will start against Louisville. I've never thought Golden was intelligent, far from it actually (although he thinks he's the smartest fellow on the planet, that or clinically insane since he thinks people aren't smart enough to see through the bs he tries to sell a lot of the time), but he's not dumb enough to start a true Frosh on the road with the national spotlight on both teams.

It'll be something along the lines of "we're four years in and we're depending on a true freshman"

So what if Golden starts Heaps and he's, well, actually pretty good?

Or, perhaps we can consider it's camp talk. Let's see what happens over the course of the season, no? There's a good amount of evidence that our players have not consistently been in the best positions to be (a) aggressive and (b) therefore able to play up to their max potential.
