DAY 7 PRACTICE THREAD

Matt Porter @mattyports
Thurston Armbrister jumps a slant on Malcolm Lewis and picks off Jake Heaps. Big party on the defensive sideline.

Heaps is a turnover machine but Golden is going to start him, smh

D gets a pick and "Heaps is a turnover machine"....Offense breaks a nice run and "our defense STILL sucks"....yep, season must be around the corner.

If you've read up on Heaps then you know that his team last year wasn't exactly talented... Taking a look at his Freshman year which probably which was probably his most talented team, isn't all that concerning.....

Tired of hearing this. I've seen QB's carry some **** teams with barely any talent. Until he shows me, my hopes are not high on Heaps from history.

Couldn't agree more. Getting named the 127th out of 128 most efficient quarterback at the division 1 level isn't an easy feat to accomplish...you have to earn that designation.

He's a retread who's advisors did a good job identifying an opportunity where there's skill position talent and a lack of viable upperclassmen QB options to earn him a second chance and a final look at the college level. I'm 100% skeptical on him until proven wrong with his play on the field against real competition

Gonna say it again...if this is anywhere close you go with Kaaya til Ryan Williams is ready.

So you're skeptical of Heaps based on past experience, but you're sold on Kaaya, who has no experience? Not even a scrimmage?

Duke Johnson said today that reading coverages is easy for Heaps as it comes naturally to him while Kaaya has had some difficulties with it.

Yeah but who has thrown the most interceptions and bad passes out of the two...... Heaps.... I'm not sold on heaps he throws behind or high too much.

Where did you get this from?

Very true. And how dare Heaps throw a pick when he's only been playing with his receivers live for 2 days!

No idea how you arrived at that interpretation...I'm not sold on any QB on the roster right now, and that includes Williams. It's the reason why I'm not holding out unrealistic expectations for some miracle run this year.

Of the available options Kaaya represents the one that has, at least as of now, a future benefit. Something worth investing in and giving him the experience now with the hopes that by next year we can hopefully start making some real noise.

As opposed to going with a 1 year retread with a horrible track record who has already bounced around a couple schools.

That's what I'm saying.

So you're in "play for next year" mode before the season even starts? How about letting it develop beyond a week of practice before melting down?

We have no clue who will start or who will even separate a little during scrimmages. Kirby Freeman looked good in practice with no rush on him and no game situations to monitor.

No...I'm saying none of the options are great so go with the with one that looks like it might be worth spending the most time on.

In the act of doing that...the kid might just surprise us all and turn this season into more than what someone like myself is fearing.

The two ideas are not mutually exclusive...and the fact remains that there are no other great (healthy) options on the roster right now which makes it even more logical.

So I'd rather let THAT develop. I'm not juding Heaps or Kaaya by a single throw they make in preseason against a defense that I'm not expecting to be appreciably better than it has been...I'm basing it on what I think is best for the program BOTH now and tomorrow.

Maybe you ought to listen to the most talented guy on the team... According to Duke Heaps can read a Defense while Kaaya is having problems (only natural for a true freshman).... If this was against FIU or Savannah State start Kaaya but they're playing Louisville.... Truth is we're not winning a N.C. this year why burn Kaaya's freshman year? Let the kid learn, develop good habits and next year it's all his.... Kaaya from what I've read has worked very hard to get to this point, why throw him into the fire and rush things? If Kaaya is that much better then Heaps than by all means play him, but if it's close let him sit and learn....
