DAY 7 PRACTICE THREAD

So you're skeptical of Heaps based on past experience, but you're sold on Kaaya, who has no experience? Not even a scrimmage?

No idea how you arrived at that interpretation...I'm not sold on any QB on the roster right now, and that includes Williams. It's the reason why I'm not holding out unrealistic expectations for some miracle run this year.

Of the available options Kaaya represents the one that has, at least as of now, a future benefit. Something worth investing in and giving him the experience now with the hopes that by next year we can hopefully start making some real noise.

As opposed to going with a 1 year retread with a horrible track record who has already bounced around a couple schools.

That's what I'm saying.

Maybe you ought to listen to the most talented guy on the team... According to Duke Heaps can read a Defense while Kaaya is having problems (only natural for a true freshman).... If this was against FIU or Savannah State start Kaaya but they're playing Louisville.... Truth is we're not winning a N.C. this year why burn Kaaya's freshman year? Let the kid learn, develop good habits and next year it's all his.... Kaaya from what I've read has worked very hard to get to this point, why throw him into the fire and rush things? If Kaaya is that much better then Heaps than by all means play him, but if it's close let him sit and learn....

Keep listening to what players and coaches publicly tell the media...it's all truth and a great indication of everything that goes on behind the scenes.

It's clear you know more than they do. Tell us moar...

Not true smart ***....but I do feel confident in saying it's almost never in a coach or player's best interest to tell the media the 100% truth on anything. Can't say I blame them either.

Couldn't agree more. Getting named the 127th out of 128 most efficient quarterback at the division 1 level isn't an easy feat to accomplish...you have to earn that designation.

He's a retread who's advisors did a good job identifying an opportunity where there's skill position talent and a lack of viable upperclassmen QB options to earn him a second chance and a final look at the college level. I'm 100% skeptical on him until proven wrong with his play on the field against real competition

Gonna say it again...if this is anywhere close you go with Kaaya til Ryan Williams is ready.

So you're in "play for next year" mode before the season even starts? How about letting it develop beyond a week of practice before melting down?

We have no clue who will start or who will even separate a little during scrimmages. Kirby Freeman looked good in practice with no rush on him and no game situations to monitor.

No...I'm saying none of the options are great so go with the with one that looks like it might be worth spending the most time on.

In the act of doing that...the kid might just surprise us all and turn this season into more than what someone like myself is fearing.

The two ideas are not mutually exclusive...and the fact remains that there are no other great (healthy) options on the roster right now which makes it even more logical.

So I'd rather let THAT develop. I'm not juding Heaps or Kaaya by a single throw they make in preseason against a defense that I'm not expecting to be appreciably better than it has been...I'm basing it on what I think is best for the program BOTH now and tomorrow.

so kayaa is the best qb option on our team worth investing in? How did you come to that conclusion? Plays of the day? We know you don't care for the perspective of the players and who can trust the spin coming from the coaches. You have a media pass! Why didn't you say that upfront?

The afternoon portion of this two-a-day ... as expected ... has been delayed by lightning. We'll get going in 30 minutes, at the earliest.

OK, and now the all-clear alarm has gone off. So there's some kinda malfunction or ... y'know what? I don't care anymore.

Ya'll need to just calm down and PM Whoop. He told me who the starter was gonna be a week ago......

Seeing a little pattern at camp over the past couple of days: lots of throws to Duke out of the backfield. More than usual, it seems.

About time.

Exactly. Now, if we could just find a precise route runner to do work from the slot position and an above average pass receiving tightend, we would have the necessary tools to be an efficient short to intermediate passing team. Just move the chains.......

Tired of hearing this. I've seen QB's carry some **** teams with barely any talent. Until he shows me, my hopes are not high on Heaps from history.

You are making too much sense, patience and let it play itself out. At the very least there is real competition, not a bad thing.

Coaches have their own agenda, but a player? You think Duke cares whether it's Olsen, Heaps or Kaaya? He's got one thing on his mind and that's winning football games... The way I read his comment is, that Heaps gives them the better chance of winning right now.... Who knows in a week or 2 with a little more experience under his belt Kaaya could be Duke's guy? It's not about this year because truth be told we're not quite there yet, but we're a whole lot closer today then we were a year ago.... You play for the Win but you've got to keep an eye on the future....

If you've read up on Heaps then you know that his team last year wasn't exactly talented... Taking a look at his Freshman year which probably which was probably his most talented team, isn't all that concerning.....

Thurston Armbrister jumps a slant on Malcolm Lewis and picks off Jake Heaps. Big party on the defensive sideline.

Heaps is a turnover machine but Golden is going to start him, smh

"Interception waiting to happen"

Stephen Morris 2.0

Tired of hearing this. I've seen QB's carry some **** teams with barely any talent.

Could you name a few?

Couple changes: RT Trevor Darling, RB Gus Edwards, TE Stan Dobard, LG Hunter Wells in orange.

Just because heaps is here now there aint no need to act like he is a good qb.

Byu is a good program. The 2 years before heaps got there they were 10-3 and 11-2. Heaps fresh year they go 7-6 and he was average at times.

His soph year at byu he started the first 5 games. They went 3-2 and he played like ****. In the 5 games he had 57% 9tds 8ints.

They benched him and they won 7 out the last 8 games and finished 10-3. He got mad transfered and thats when byu changed the offense.

actually, generally players tend to want the most experience QB to play when its a tie between a veteran and a rookie. players are always in the win now mode especially a player like Duke who is most likely playing his final year of college ball. now does duke have a preference for who plays QB? we'll probably never know, but it wouldn't surprise me if most of the team is hoping Heaps takes the reigns as generally you would expect a senior to make less mistakes than a freshman

Joseph Yearby is back at practice, taking handoffs and cutting and such in the walkthrough #Canes are currently conducting.

Also, TE Beau Sandland lost his orange jersey (offensive team leaders) to Stan Dobard.
