DAY 5 PRACTICE THREAD

It's very obvious when WRs don't listen to a QBs calls... Kaaya has their attention when speaks. Good sign. Yearby looks great

Really have no idea why he hasn't been getting more pub.

Yearby is going to be a difference maker from jump street.

We have so many talented players for the first time in a long time. Another person not talked about is darling.

Funny how Gadbois was saying he was the going into beast mode this preseason and how is that turning out so far? Can some one confirm how he's doing?

Our Dbs are the strength of the team. Corn is going to be a solid starter at some
Point in his career and he's 4th or 5th on the depth chart. I'm sold
On Antonio Crawford, he has elite
Speed and he seems to be
Processing the game much faster.

Yearby is so quick. So quick. He and duke make up the best backfield
We've had here more than a decade IMO.[

Antonio has stepped his **** up this off-season, he's standing out. I don't really see us losing much alternating between Howard, Gunter, Burns and Crawford, with Elder being just a hair below those guys.

I've always felt that a good nickle is almost as important as a starter. There's quite often someone hurt, and you need to spell a guy every once in a while. We can definitely use them all.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes returned to the Greentree Practice Fields Sunday for their first practice of #CanesCamp in full pads.

Saturday's practice was also Miami's first morning session of this year's preseason camp, and it proved to be a productive day for the Hurricanes under the bright South Florida sun.

“It was good, physical and spirited,” head coach Al Golden said. “We got a lot done. I am happy with the effort so far.”

Quarterback Jake Heaps found sophomore wide receiver and Miramar product Malcolm Lewis for a huge touchdown, an 80-yard score that brought loud cheers from the offensive sideline.

“He’s polished,” offensive coordinator James Coley said of Heaps. “He comes in with a lot of experience. He’s very fundamentally sound. He’s a guy that has been playing for a while…he’s been fairly accurate, making great checks on the line of scrimmage.”

The senior signal caller credited Lewis for making another huge catch. Heaps believes the entire receiving corps has been strong so far and will be a big asset to Miami’s quarterbacks.

“Malcolm has made some big plays,” Heaps said. “He’s had a great offseason, he’s done some good things - and so has this whole receiving group. Whether it’s with me or someone else, these receivers are making plays, and you can see it.”

Miami's young quarterbacks also looked good Saturday, as freshman Brad Kaaya found Walter Tucker for a 10-yard touchdown. Fellow freshman Malik Rosier hit sophomore Stacy Coley over the middle for a big gain and redshirt freshman Kevin Olsen connected with freshman Braxton Berrios for a 25-yard gain.

“I have no idea if he’s a freshman or not,” Coley said of Kaaya. “He acts like he’s a senior. He’s very sharp. We threw the playbook at these guys, and they have responded…I’ve been on them pretty hard. They’re very focused. Brad has been extremely accurate, and he’s been throwing the ball really well.”

Running back Gus Edwards made sure the passing game wasn’t the sole focus Saturday. The sophomore is known for his strength and power, but Edwards showed excellent burst when he sprinted for the pylon during goal line drills for a touchdown.

Tight end Standish Dobard also snagged a touchdown in a goal line situation. The sophomore picked up six points for the offense when he weaved through traffic to make a touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone.

While the Hurricane offense provided several highlights, Miami's defense made plenty of noise on Saturday morning.

Freshman Chad Thomas picked up a sack after an impressive inside rush, but he was not the only former Booker T. Washington standout to get to the quarterback on Saturday. Freshman Demetrius Jackson also used his athleticism and quickness to record a sack.

“Demetrius Jackson has been a really pleasant surprise for us,” Golden said. “Not a lot of football background, but he has put on a lot of good weight. And Chad [Thomas] has made a difference.”

Miami's defensive backs also continued their streak of impressive play early on in #CanesCamp. Sophomore Corn Elder snared his first interception of the week, while junior Deon Bush made an athletic play to break up a pass intended for Dobard.

Saturday's practice was the first practice for freshman wide receiver Darrell Langham. A 6-foot-5 native of Lantana, Fla., Langham donned No. 81 and was participating in a limited number of drills. Langham, who was in a helmet and shorts, was in the first day of the NCAA five-day acclimatization period. He is scheduled to be integrated into full pads by Miami's ninth practice of #CanesCamp.

The Hurricanes will hold their sixth practice session of #CanesCamp on Sunday. For the latest information on Miami Hurricanes Football, follow @MiamiHurricanes on Twitter and the official blog for Hurricanes Football, www.theufootball.com.

Start Heaps vs UL...backup Rosier for first 3 games then redshirt (assuming Heaps makes it through game 1 unscathed)...Williams back from injury by Nebraska and is backup QB or starter depending on Heaps play...redshirt Kaaya and unleash that beast on college football next year.

Next years depth chart:

Kaaya...Rosier...Lawson (we are somewhat thin here until 2016 if Olsen is pushed out as seems to be the case)

this makes no **** sense at all. If Kaaya is the goods and you don't want to ruin him by starting him in a hostile environment week 1 then he should be the back up and get a series or two if the opportunity presents itself and continue to allow him to do that and compete to eventual supplant Heaps. There is no reason to redshirt him at all unless they just don't think he's better than Heaps.

I'll never get why people are so **** fascinated with redshirting players that are good enough to play now instead of just letting them get game reps even if they are in garbage time. It's not the 90's anymore players aren't hanging around for 4 years and definitely not for 5 years if they are really good. They'll be in college for only 3 years whether it's as a true Jr/Rs Soph (ala Manziel, Willis, etc) or at the very least a they're gone in 4. No one is staying around for a RsSr year anymore so why waste a year on the scout team for a quality player.

If the qb competition stays close then give the team to kaaya. Kid sounds like the truth but it's still early.

This is a first but I agree with NVA, if the battle is even or even if Heaps is ahead by a razor give it to Kaaya, the upside is much greater IMO.

‏@mattyports Golden clarifies he'll cut QB race to two after first scrimmage, which is Wednesday.

Has it been more than 2 thus far?

Heaps and Kaaya have pretty much gotten all the worth while snaps. What and how much of an opportunity has the other 2 QB's gotten. For it to not already be cut down to 2 QB's?

I am not trying to be a smart *** here either. I just can't put it together from what i have seen posted over the past week. That it is more than 2 QB now.

I think its obvious from the tweets/guys there/coach speak that those two have separated themselves anyway. Coach Coley made it pretty obvious today that Rosier is behind mentally, and he didn't even want to talk about Olsen..lol

Most fans are not scrutinizing the details of the practices the way we are. I think the clarification is largely for them and also to make it "official."

Both Olsen and Rosier have taken reps with the 1st team so far. So, technically, it has been open to all 4 but it's been pretty clear after the 1st practice that it's been a 2 horse race. Wed will just make it official and allow the coaches to split the 1st team reps amongst 2 qb's and not 4

Legit scuffle before Oklahoma drill. Courtel Jenkins and Corey King. Jenkins heated, gets coached by Jethro Frankin: "Take it out on [drill]Matt Porter

Now Ryan Mayes goes after Braxton Berrios. Two are quickly separated. First full-contact practice of camp, y'all.

Tensions running high

Good to hear.

Time to eat.

If Kaaya beats out Heaps but it's close, meaning you'd feel comfortable starting either one Sept 1 but Kaaya is clearly the more talented guy, who starts?
I think golden goes with the older guy.
Is Golden going to make that call or will he let Coley choose his guy?

Well, Golden's title is head coach, not "guy who let's his subordinates do whatever the **** they want."

After 3 years it is pretty clear the buck stops with Golden on every aspect of the football team.
