DAY 3 PRACTICE THREAD

If Kevin Olsen's name was Kevin Smith he would've been a 3 star recruit who signed with a mid major.

He's never really shown anything above average talent.

Bull****, just because he's having struggles doesn't take away what he was as a prospect, lot of top guys who watched qbs said kid was advanced for a junior in high school. Really think Olsen needs a reality check and get his head in the game, he's been on a downward spiral for a little while now.

Interesting. Why can't his football father or brother or his girlfriend set him straight? His brother knows what it takes

Boy will eventually be a 280lb nightmare.

i'm not crowning the dude yet like a lot of you guys, but there are 3 things that stand out from that 6 second clip. one, he sells the play action play better than Stemo did in 4 years here, he looks off the defense with a quick look to the left and then he throws the ball sharply with accuracy and with proper pace. he sure looks the part in those 6 seconds.
Dude there was no one rushing. Smh

To be fair, there will be no rushing when our defense puts pads on either.

I KEED, I KEED!

Chad told the staff that he does not want to be more than 260. he seen what they did to chick, he not dumb.

Weight isn't the reason Chickillo isn't a quick-twitch rush end. His best qualities has always been his relentlessness and strength to set the edge. Chad Thomas has Chickillo's size, BUT the guy has a much quicker first-step off the line and is much more athletic coming off the edge.
Go back and watch chicks high School highlights. Dude was crazy fast.

What happened between then and his freshman year? He never looked fast if you're talking about explosion. His straight line speed is pretty good actually.

I don't really recall any True Freshmen QBs starting and tearing it up.

There has got to be some examples but I thought that kid from Penn State looked great last year (Hackenburg?)... I only saw a couple of their games but he looked really good for a true freshman everytime I saw.

Yeah hackenberg played pretty well. The thing is that the redshirt year does wonders for a QB. Most of the time when a true freshman plays well its a dual threat who can use his legs if things break down, they don't NEED to be a great passers right away. Pocket passers need that extra year. There are tons of examples of redshirt freshman QBs who light it up but not many of true freshman. That doesn't mean I think Kaaya should redshirt, but he should be brought along slowly and not thrown to Louisville or Nebraska. Maybe by the Cincinnati game he takes over, this kid has the goods for sure.

I remember Chick in the UA All Star game. He looked fast that day!

That is so not true. I love how fans always say this after the fact. He flashed at the Elite 11 camp and was highly recruited b/c of his talent in high school. His name had nothing to do with it, other than giving Miami a leg up b/c of his brother.

Clowney was on the other side, as I recall.

And Chick has always been the same guy. Nice, solid defensive end, always gives max effort. Type of guy you want in your bunker. But if you are looking for him to lead your pass rush you are ****ed. Period.

Sometimes some kids don't see the light or get sidetracked, or the mind and effort is not 100% there. He needs a kick in his *** from someone. Hasn't carried himself very well here. I still like Olsen till today but something is not clicking and the clock is ticking. He needs to get himself in gear.

And thank you PSU Cane. Seriously.

The best I can recall is Manning. It took him a few games before he started. If memory serves, he was forced into the role due to injury. And even he struggled that year, though he of course showed flashes of brilliance.

Manning looked like crap as a freshman.
Todd Helton looked better.

I've never seen a true freshman excel as a starting qb.

Hackenberg is a good example. He played great and had a mediocre year, but it set him up for this year.

If it's close you play Heaps and let Kaaya play in mop up or whole half against our two patsies.

If Kaaya is way better then you go with him.

I'm hoping for Kaaya to be the man.

Nothing wrong with that comparison, KW had the entire toolbox coming out of high school and then got Patrick Ramsey'd by our pathetic protection...spent the first season on his *** so much he couldn't stop hearing footsteps..

For DEs, explosion is the key (quick-twitch). And so he looked fast against high school competition in Tampa. Big difference between that and college...

You'd be willing to burn Kaaya's redshirt so that he can play in mop-up duty a few times?

I think it should be cut and dry. If Kaaya proves he's the best quarterback in the competition this summer, then the job should be his. No questions asked. But if the staff goes with Heaps (hopefully not to just defer to his "experience"), then Kaaya should be redshirted and Olsen should be the backup.

They should go all in or all out with this decision, no hedging.

He finished 10th out of 11 QB's at The Elite 11 camp.

On top of that he looked terrible at The Under Armor game.

In reality, he was no better a prospect than Stephen Morris coming out of High School. He just has a better name and a football family background.

If Kaaya is all we think he is he won't be staying for a fifth year (or maybe even a fourth) so the redshirt is meaningless anyway.

Maybe has full command of the offense at the end of training camp

Maybe he has it in week 9

Maybe week 6

But if he's got it in week 9 and he provides the team with a better chance to win than the incumbent, then you're killing two birds with one stone. You put the current team in the best position to win and the future teams would be led by a QB with more game experience than if he simply sat out the entire season.

That would be history repeating itself.

Please. Stephen Morris was a low level Qb prospect. He didn't sniff the elite 11.
