David Gilbert comments......

LOL. Uh, and I hate to point out the obvious, but dont the stats that were just posted pretty much make this thread stupid? Shayon's stats this season are very similar to Gilbert's "great" stats from Wisconsin. So what great improvement was he going to have offered us over Shayon? Not saying Shayon is some kind of superstar, but its not like the numbers show Gilbert was significantly more productive at Wisky than Shayon was this year.

Another stupid thread to find more dumb sh*t to complain about.

LOL, buddy I just posted the actual article for you. These were his OWN words and decision he made with his OWN doctors after the multiple surgeries and reinjuries he suffered on the same foot. That he decided to come back again anyway and play is great. But just because you didnt see him being carted off the field, does not mean he was 100% healthy on that foot. To START. Secondly, "he played so well in 2012", but his numbers were basically the same as Shayon Green's this year, so what exactly is the point of all this? Even if we assume Gilbert was 100%, something HIGHLY doubtful considering the kid had OFFICIALLY QUIT football because of his repeated injuries, what exactly did you think he was going to do over Shayon Green?

From what it looks like to me, you have basically two guys who were playing about the same type of football. When you look at their numbers side by side, what big improvement should we expect from Gilbert? And if there is no big improvement, why would you bench a Senior Team leader who has been here the whole time, for a 1 year transfer, with a history of major injuries?

And for the record, Ive watched Gilbert closely too when he's been in, and I have seen him blow a number of assignments in games. He's no more a master of this "system" than anyone else on that defense.

This thread is another stupid thing to nitpick about and complain about the coaches. Now IF ONLY we had played Gilbert more, things would have been great. But the stats DONT back that up. They show Gilbert's BEST year at UW, was very similar to Shayon's numbers this year. So what objective data do you have to offer to say that the coaches were stupid for starting Shayon over Gilbert? And please dont give me "my data is my eyes", stuff. Because if Gilbert has been out there beasting, I havent seen it, and Ive been looking.

Gilbert, like Renfrow, was brought in here for depth and experience. Im sure they were hoping he would also improve the DL and maybe the pass rush. But when you look at the numbers Shayon put up this year, there is NO WAY ANYONE can assert that Gilbert would have put up better numbers had he played more or been the starter.

It's not only Shayon Green's team but basically all the SR's team that stayed on board and bought into Golden's program.
Golden is pretty much rewarding this group for being good soldiers and is giving them all a chance to be key in the final outcome of their final season.
I think the team has pretty much accepted this and are good with it.
Through this Golden is laying the foundation for the programs culture which will reward loyalty, commitment and hard work above all else. The younger more talented players and those that come in like Gilbert with "Ego's" are learning that it will take more than just talent to play for Golden.
This mindset and culture will begin paying off dividends as the younger talented players mature and develop under it.

Im sure there is some of this, but people are making WAAAAAY too much about this. If Gilbert was out there tearing OLs to shreds and having QBs running for their lives, he would have been playing most snaps. Golden isnt stupid. The reality is that Gilbert did not offer any significant upgrade from Shayon, and so, why make Gilbert the starter? If anything, Shayon knows the system better and the players on the defense better than Gilbert. Im sure if there was such a HUGE talent gap between the two, we would have seen more of the better player. There is plenty to be dissatisfied over on the defense, but this looks to me like a BS issue.

Dude looked like a peg legged pirate returning that fumble last week. ****.....Chick was running faster. I'm glad he gave it up for the program and sacrificed this year but let's not pretend like we had a Outland Trophy finalist on our hands.

That was way too much for me to bother reading. I brushed through some of it, and wanted to address this part with you.

First, you're looking at Gilbert's stats from LAST YEAR and comparing them to Green's stats from THIS YEAR. Why not compare them to Green's stats from last year to be fair? If Green improved from his junior to senior year, then Gilbert could have too. Right?

Second, how do you know what Gilbert's assignments were? Were you privy to the defensive playbook? You saw him blowing assignments, but you don't really have any idea what he was supposed to be doing.

If he was so badly crippled, then how'd he play so well in 2012? He didn't want to play for the new coach at Wisconsin and bought Al's line of bull. He came back home to play his final year and got lost here. There were absolutely NO SIGNS all year long that this guy was hurt or limited. He played immediately and was never mentioned as injured at any point in this season.

Dude looked like a peg legged pirate returning that fumble last week. ****.....Chick was running faster. I'm glad he gave it up for the program and sacrificed this year but let's not pretend like we had a Outland Trophy finalist on our hands.

More ridiculous hyperbole. Chick was running faster than him from behind him? You guys will stop at nothing to advance the agenda.

P.S. Despite Golden's 500 Club labeling Chick a bum, he was actually a very good athlete coming out of HS. Everyone in the world wanted the guy. He's no stiff out there. He's being asked to be a totem pole out there, and he's doing yeoman's work trying to be that totem pole.

Well there were blitz plays where I saw him staring at one of his own guys, and then totally freeze up looking back and forth trying to figure out what his assignment was. So, in that respect, you are correct, I dont KNOW what his exact assignment was, but what I DO KNOW, is that Gilbert didnt either, because he didnt cover the back that floated out of the back field, nor did he rush the passer until the ball had been thrown. I saw this several times during the season.

And really dude? You were just crowing about the "great" season Gilbert had last year. He was an ALL BIG 10 type player wasnt he? So now you are going to downplay his stats from last year? Becuase his stats from LAST year, when he was so "great" according to you guys, are almost the same as Shayon's this year. So what does that say about the kind of season Shayon had?

And are you at the practices? Have you watched both players and how they have been playing in practice? Do YOU know how much of the playbook Gilbert knows vs Shayon? But yet you feel quite comfortable jumping all over this rather ambiguous comment by Gilbert which could be taken many different ways, and slam the coaches as if they have made some grave mistake in starting Shayon over Gilbert. But when we compare the objective data, namely the stats Gilbert posted in his "Great" year last year, they are almost the same as Shayon's. So if those same stats were good enough for Gilbert, who was an UPPERCLASSMAN last year at Wisky, to be considered a "Stud" and an "All Big Ten" type player, why arent those stats good enough for Shayon this year?

Can you honestly sit here and say that based on what you saw of Gilbert's admittedly limited play time this year, you felt he was a major upgrade to Shayon? Because I dont.

Seems to me you're the one with an agenda around here.

During the game when he was returning it, I made the comment how it looks like he still has a little gimp to his step. I just rewatched the play and I guess it wasn't as noticeable as I thought but Chick was still gaining on him.

P.S. I've never trashed Chick. Love him and think he's a fine player. Just don't exactly think he's a burner.

We all arguing about 2 jags? One with popcorn for feet and the other popcorn for knees?

The purpose of this thread was to draw attention to the absurdity of Gilbert's statement that he took a backseat because this is Shayon Green's team. So basically no matter how ****** Green played, his good citizenry holds higher value. Thats boy scout ball. Would rather see a younger, more talented player such as AQM whose legs are not composed of cadaver tissue but thats just me.

Well that's not how I took the comment at all. I took Gilbert's statement as one of a competitive kid who would like to see more playing time. He came in with a lot of big numbers and accolades from his time at Wisky, but his chronic injuries had all but ended his football days. I think he felt he would be getting more reps, but his statement was acknowledging that Shayone is obviously a leader on this team and the defense, and he was going to have to learn to take a back seat to that being an "outsider". And frankly, the numbers dont really justify anything different. Shayone isnt a superstud, but he's had a fair season. The big problem for him is being asked to do things that he's not good at, like coverage. But he's been pretty solid against the run.

I dont buy this stuff that Golden isnt playing the best players because someone is more of a "boy scout" than others. Thats bullsh8t. Eddie Johnson saw the field plenty here despite being a straight up GOON who would get into it with coaches. Shayone plays because Golden and Donofrio feel he is a leader of the defense, he probably knows the defense, and is more experienced and they feel is less prone to make mistakes and miss assignments.

I mean this isnt some unique situation. Many coaches will often go with the more experienced player unless an underclassmen is simply a PHENOM. Young players sometimes make big plays, but they can also make big mistakes, and Golden and Donofrio are obviously the type who prefer stability, to wild extremes on the field.

Gilbert's career stats. Looks like he played 14 games last year, started 13 and from those numbers played very well.

Who said he was head and shoulders better than Green? He almost never played this year. Seems like with his talent and experience, he could have been used more and more effectively.

All the Alpololgists are crying about our lack of depth and talent on the DL, but an Honorable Mention All Big 10 player couldn't get any minutes on this team. Kind of shoots that theory down a little.

This. You bring in clearly a talented kid. And golden knew what he was getting it's not like he was pulling a high school kid that may not pan out. This kid was a know commodity, golden brings him in and barely uses him. Just like beau sandland. What are the black jerseys for if golden isn't gonna play the best players? Put the players that give you the best chance to win. If that's Shayon then fine but something tells me that's not really what was happening this year
