Outside contain + tackling in space. The issue is the big plays (20+ yarders and 15 yard penalties) we are allowing. That's imo literally the entire story of our Defense getting killed thus far. Now obviously you can't fully eliminate all that. And you're going to give up long drives where they are hitting short and medium stuff. But our strength is our Dline. And to me, the more plays a team has to run because they aren't hitting 15+ yarders or aren't getting gifted them from our penalties, the more likely one of our DLineman is going to make a big play and put them behind the sticks and kill their drive. I'm confident in our Offense, so what we just don't want to do is gift opponents easy scores they didn't have to work for. We have literally given up like 10 scoring drives out of like 23 total where like 60%+ of their yards on that drive came on 1 play. So half the time teams score on us, it involved a Big play. And there were like 3 or 4 drives where our 15 yard penalties alone accounted for like 25% of their yardage. So we need to heavily focus on reducing those. If we can cut it even in half, it'll make this defense feel like they are so much better. Cause we really haven't been bad on like 85%-95% of the plays we defend....
UF: Allowed a 71 yard TD run on the first play of a drive at the end of the 2nd quarter. This was one of two scoring drive our Defense really allowed all game. They also scored on a drive they only gained 10 yards but were in FG range from an INT, so this I'm not counting negatively against the D. They had a drive in the 3rd quarter that ended in an INT, but the drive went 51 yards and involved a 15 yard penalty (30%). Rest of the plays were just short/medium stuff. And the second scoring drive was when we were up 38-10 and we're putting a lot of subs in. Still was a good drive by them that they didn't get any major big yardage plays nor did we commit fouls... So that was probably the one total drive this game that our Defense was Bad.
FAMU: Allowed a 29 and 34 yard pass on the same drive in 1st quarter. It was 9 plays and went 70 yards, 63 of which were in those 2 plays (90%). Drive ended in a FG. FAMU had one other good drive on us that ended in a FG in the 2nd quarter, but that didn't have any really big plays.
BALL ST: Longest Drive was only 28 yards, so nothing to see there.
USF: On their First FG drive which was 35 yards, 15 of them (43%) were from a penalty. Their 2nd scoring drive came off a pick in short yardage, so it's kinda whatever for our D. Their 3rd scoring drive was 40 yards and ended in a FG, 28 of those yards came on one play (70%). Their 4th scoring drive they didn't have any big plays, but we did commit another 15 yard penalty. But this is exactly the type of drive that we should be more than happy to cause. They took 19 plays to go 66 yards, and 23% of that was from our penalty. You force teams to do that and our DLine will eventually make a big play and kill their drive, like what happened. Their next drive they missed a FG, but the drive went 62 yards and they had a 64 yard play (103%) lol. So again we allow one big play and stop them the other 6 plays before they miss a FG. They had one other solid drive near the end of the 3rd quarter that went 61 yards before they threw a pick that involved a 26 yard completion (43%) and another 15 yard penalty (25%) which was on a 4th down. These couple Big plays and Big penalties led to a lot of points. Ultimately we're talking like 5 plays here.
VTECH: Their first scoring drive came off a turnover. But it only went 30 yards and involved a 25 yard TD pass (83%) on 3rd down. Their second TD drive was early in the second quarter. The drive was 64 yards, and involved a 55 yard TD pass (86%). Their 3rd TD drive was probably their best full on drive because it was just 5 plays and 4 of them were 16-20 yards. They had a 2min drive before half they picked up 34 yards and got a FG. 20 yards came on 1 pass (58%). Their Next TD drive went 45 yards, and we committed a 15 yard penalty (33%) on a 2nd and 17 that was incomplete. They proceeded to get three 15+ yard plays to get a TD. We kept that drive alive for them.
CAL: Their first TD drive went 89 yards and involved a 57 yard TD (64%). That drive was starting good for them as they hit two 15 yarders before then as well. Their second TD drive went 56 yards and involved a 51 yard pass (91%). Their 3rd TD drive went 75 yards and involved a 66 yard TD pass (88%) on 4th and 1. That is just unacceptable. Their 4th TD drive went 80 yards and involved a 56 yard pass (70%) followed by a 20 yard pass to set up a Rushing TD. Their final scoring drive was a FG near the end of the 3rd quarter that went 55 yards and had a 20 yard and a 22 yard scramble by medonza on a whiffed sack. Cal had one play >4 yards in their final like 17 plays on offense.
