DAILY DEBATE: Should Francois Mauigoa move to guard?

If we were talking about pure performance I think a case could be made that Cooper and Rivers were better than him last year. Kiko on defense. X. Bain as you noted. Porter has to be up there

But if you want to add potential and who I am most optimistic about I think Bain and Mauigoa would be my top 2 if that makes sense? Just need to see Mauigoa clean up his issues from last year. He was the most penalized lineman we had and struggled with speed at times. All things I would say are normal for a true freshman though

So maybe not a disagreement but I don’t think Mauigoas performance last year was unquestionable like Bains was
On field performance I don’t disagree. But I’m talking about just flat out best. If other schools got to poach from this roster, Mauigoa and Bain are off the board first. I’m saying sacrificing them is dumb. Give them a spot and let them develop.

I gotcha. Was kinda realizing we are probably on the same page in general

Certainly not gonna criticize a guy like Mauigoa that has a trajectory of a first round pick, maybe top end. We’ve been so bad for so long at RT I also hesitate to mess with that and just assume someone like Bell or Samson can fix it if we moved Mauigoa

I will admit that seeing Maui pull and kill ppl like that dude that got drafted by the colts from the domers would be nice. But I’m not losing sleep over where a 6’5 330 lb dancing bear plays. He will produce wherever.

Keep him at RT and let him continue to develop there. I would keep him there for the rest of his career here.

Let Samson, McCoy and Kinsler battle for the LG spot.

It all depends on who the 5th best lineman is and where they are best. IMO Mauigoa would be an excellent guard.

I think we can all agree, at this point, the best 4 linemen on the roster are Mauigoa, Rivers, Cooper, and Carpenter, in no particular order. So who is the 5th best? If that dude is a better tackle, then you put Mauigoa at LG. If he’s a better guard, you leave Mauigoa where he is and that dude starts at LG.

I actually think the ceiling play here is Mauigoa at LG and us developing a stud RT. Let’s just say it’s Bell, for example. IMO a line of Rivers, Mauigoa, Carpenter, Coop, and a rock solid RT in Bell (or pancake) is the ceiling for this group. But really it all depends on who that 5th best OL is to make this decision.

The one guy that shouldn't move is the one guy that HAS actual starting experience at other positions? Make that make sense...
Rivers was rock solid at LT last year. Unless someone blows him out of the water, which is not happening, he is the most consistent guy at the most important position.

Rivers is not a LT, period. We’ve been there & done that. He failed. He’s a Guard

I wish more players can fail like Rivers

Well, a couple of reasons why I made this comment irresponsibly:

1. In the camp report, it was stated that Rivers struggled at T, & his real position was RG. Why did they (posters) say RG? B/c in 2022 when he played LG, he was very JAG-ish. Had some good moments & then a lot of bad moments, as well. ****, the whole OL was JAG-ged Edge.

Now, he was coming back from an injury, & he also didn’t play the full 2022-23 season so that could’ve played a part, too.

2. If u all recall, the hype of “We need u Zion” entered the 2023 season b/c of the 2022 debacle. Rivers was an afterthought, but b/c Zion has remained M.I.A (and I’m still not sure…nvm) Rivers became our best option at LT w/ Cohen coming in to solidify the LG spot.

In all honesty, I forgot Rivers played the T spot, until @DTP brought it up, simply b/c the camp reports were ingrained about him needing to play RG + the horrific 2022 showing.

To his credit, especially being fully healthy, he played very well. I would also assume playing next to Cohen vs. next to Campbell no doubt made a huge difference, too.

Regardless, ur boy was slipping & trippin w/ that post. Lmao

Yeah I guessed you were just joking about Rivers.

I was definitely one of those questioning his position. He talked so confidently preseason last year and it blew my mind that he would dare.

I expected Zion to come back last year for the LT spot.

Glad I got it wrong. Good LT for us. The league will probably move him.

@DMoney I think due to his mauling capabilities he is better suited for guard but he can be great at tackle because at his size he is a beast in terms of athleticism. Samson or Bell should be Lt and Cece at LG

What’s funny? We said when we recruited Samson & Mauigoa, that was supposed to be our Tackle tandem for yrs to come. Now Samson is an unknown, & the idea is being kicked around about Francis being moved inside. Lol.

However, OL is hard to project. I think Rivers asserted himself well at T, last season on the left side. If we kick Mauigoa in, I would assume we would want to play Samson as our right tackle.

Regardless, it’s all about playing the Best 5, this is more of an off season discussion vs. reality. I’m sure the staff knows what they have w/ all these guys, who’s ready & who’s not.
