DAILY DEBATE: Should Francois Mauigoa move to guard?

I would not move our best Olineman to another position. The NFL can do what they want and will.
He is not the best OLman on the team. He'll he struggle last year at times as the starting RT. He got called for holding ALOT!! I bet he can play better as an IOL and that is where his future is at the next level.

How’s he our best lineman? Because some rankings said it? He’s our third best olineman at best. Rivers didn’t allow a sack last year (I believe) and Cooper is a pit bull. He has the most upside maybe, but he’s not the best right now

Francis was our 5th best olineman last year pretty clear. So he’s at best 3rd right now depending on what carpenter and the lg is.

Think yall should go back to that Louisville game and just watch all francis snaps, very very bad. U watch that and the unc game for example and u start to understand why we max protected so much for our tackles..

Then u step back and don’t see this top 10 oline everyone thinks we have lol..but im optimistic for development i trust mirabal

He’s the best pass blocker on the team and was 2nd team all conference.

Agreed; but we’re talking about him playing T vs. guard. Maybe ya’ll r having amnesia about calling Rivers a JAG after the failed experiment at T. It was stated his $$ position was G, which was proven to be the case.

He was our starting left tackle all last year. I thought he did a really good job.

His future is at guard. Does he know that? If he does, I would leave the decision in his hands as a coach and it's my job to figure it out if he makes the move. My job is first to win at this level, then it's to set them up for future success at the next level. The one caveat I'd put on giving him the decision is that if I can't find an answer this fall, I'll find it by Spring as I don't want to hurt the team by moving him when I don't have his replacement. I'm going to make his wish come true when it's the right time.

i haven't read the other posts ... but i think bell can play the right side due to the size and length (pause) ... then i kick mauigoa inside

We’ve had a lot of movement over the yrs, but wasn’t Rivers at LT once upon a time & struggled mightily?

I’m just not seeing what options on the roster to put at Tackle. McCoy doesn’t have the feet to play T, & Bell is an unknown. So imo, no. I know Francis had some rookie moments at Tackle, but he’s a true Tackle, & he held his own w/ limited collegiate experience imo.
Idk bro. I think McCoy looks ready at RT. For me, it doesn't matter. I trust this staff completely at OL.

Also, let’s not discount this fact that @JHallCanes observed:

Jalen did look like a totally different player in 2023 vs. other yrs. & even though he didn’t get drafted, Cohen next to him was absolutely crucial. Cohen & Lee were money for us.

Now, Francis has some growing to do. Do I think his real $$ position is guard? Yes, but…I’m looking at the current construct, & the only other potential T I see outside of Samson is Bell. So would our OL look like

LT-Rivers
LG-Mauigoa
C-Carpenter
RG-McCoy
RT-Samson/Bell

Is that the vision if we were moving Francis inside?

The two players who are asked about moving positions are the best 2 returning players. Bain and Mauigoa. It’s comical. It’s time to stop sacrificing the best players on the team, bc the coaches can’t recruit positions next to them.

The part that gives me solace here is that our OL group and these decisions are in great hands. Trying to get the best 5 on the field but mitigating risk while maximizing reward

People were justifiably very concerned last year with LT heading into the season

I think Jalen’s strength was in the pass pro so that’s something I tried to keep in mind

respectfully disagree with Mauigoa being our top two best returning players

Obviously dude has all world potential though

Curious who you got over him that was on the roster last year?
If we were talking about pure performance I think a case could be made that Cooper and Rivers were better than him last year. Kiko on defense. X. Bain as you noted. Porter has to be up there

But if you want to add potential and who I am most optimistic about I think Bain and Mauigoa would be my top 2 if that makes sense? Just need to see Mauigoa clean up his issues from last year. He was the most penalized lineman we had and struggled with speed at times. All things I would say are normal for a true freshman though

So maybe not a disagreement but I don’t think Mauigoas performance last year was unquestionable like Bains was

RG is Anez Cooper but yea I think this would be the move IF Mauigoa is willing to move.
