Objectively, yeah: our resume consists of fewer losses and a better record, two last possession losses: 1 to a team that took UGA to 8 overtimes in their house, and the other to a 9 win Cuse team also at their house-- both games went down to the wire.
As to the quality of the teams vying for remaining cfp spots (consideration that shouldn't be ignored-- see fsu post qb injury last year), if we subtract the understandable disappointment of being that close to getting further than we have in such a long time (nt just from fans but also some media that may have 'the U is back fatigue') , we can see, ironically, that the same reason we're disappointed for not separating ourselves more by defeating teams that we assume we should in order to be considered elite, is also the reason we shouldn't assume that we're far from teams ranked higher than us, or that we consider elite : to put it more bluntly: parody isn't just between us Canes and the teams we assume we should beat, but also between the teams that we assume are better and us, in the sense that they too struggled against teams that they were expected to beat, and if that makes us comparable, then the scale would tilt according to record...
A quick view at higher ranked teams' losses compared to ours ...: Northern Illinois beat ND, Georgia tech took Georgia to 8 overtimes in their house, Bama struggled with USF then lost three games -1 of which by 3 touchdowns to a .500 ou team, Ohio state lost to Oregon (who struggled with middle of the pack teams themselves) and then lost to Michigan, who's more 1 dimensional this year than Georgia tech, etc.
Perhaps we're comparing our team to our late season expectations; and our collective disappointment over how close we were to securing a spot has us misinterpreting that as being farther away than we actually are... And when you couple the removal of that with a better record, and national draw, I can completely see the committee putting us in...
