I don't think Miami deserves to be in the playoff. They had an opportunity to go out and earn something themselves, which no Miami team has done the last 20+ years. I cannot think of a game since the early 2000's, where everything was on the line and Miami delivered. It sucks. I feel for all of us that we've had to deal with this s*** for decades. I watched this team the entire year and said to myself, "Go out and take it today. Make the country really pay attention". And they never would. They would coast through most of the games and turn it on when they felt threatened. Sometimes it wasn't enough. No killer instinct. No discipline. Assuming your talent is enough, like it's been for years.
That being said, what I think Miami deserves is not the same as letting an even less deserving team get in. If the #12 spot is filled with bad teams then I'm not stubborn enough to say let them have it. So here's how I see it:
Bama
I don't even know why Bama is in the discussion. One more loss than Miami. Two losses to 6-6 teams, one of which was a blowout. How is that not instantly disqualifying? You can't get boat raced by a 6-6 team and make it in over a team that won more games than you.
Ole Miss
This one is pretty straight forward to me. They have one more loss than Miami. They lost at home to a 4 win team. They lost to a common opponent that we blew out. And they get in because they beat Georgia? That seems to be a theme. Anyway, it's really tough when you have one more loss and a common opponent you lost to.
USCe
If you erase the Bama game because it was a close loss to a good team, I think their big wins (@ Clemson, vs Missouri, vs Texas A&M) are equivalent to ours (@ Louisville, @ Florida, vs Duke) and I think their losses are slightly worse. Losing at home to LSU (8-4 with no signature wins) is equivalent to losing on the road to Georgia Tech (7-5 with no signature wins). Getting blown out at home to Ole Miss (9-3) is not equivalent to losing by 4 points on the road to Syracuse (9-3).
I know I'm biased but it's tough to make a case for these teams to be clearly better than Miami. I think Bama and Ole Miss shouldn't be in the discussion. I think you could make a case for USCe by saying they took care of business in the end and Miami didn't. We'll see how it goes but one things for sure, Mario better get to work in the offseason keeping the momentum on offense and fixing these defense.
