It’s because HRS makes it looks worse than it is. The nicer seats/bright colors (especially since aqua isn’t one of our colors), and the fact the everything is all spread out, makes attendance look worse than it is. In the OB, everything was more compact and much of the stadium is metal benches. Other parts were orange seats, which blends in.
But it’s not as bad as rivals / the media make it out to be, although of course we’d love it to be even better. We are in the top 30% of FBS attendance, even in our worst years, despite being in the bottom fifteen in UG population (which is how fandom is typically measured). For comparison, our annually attendance is similar to VT and Oregon, and averages ~15K less a year than FSU (fun fact: their renovation will be decreasing their stadium capacity to be on par with HRS). Also, UCF has never come close to our attendance numbers.
So yes, the issue is not attendance, it’s a PR / visibility problem. People are going, and we know we need the space for the biggest games, so how do we make it looked “filled” for the smaller games? Tarps are one solution, but the school definitely needs to work on this. And it will matter for conference realignment because this stuff matters to conferences. See the SI article below.
