MEGA Conference Realignment and lawsuits Megathread: Stories, Tales, Lies, and Exaggerations

Believe it has been mentioned as subtext, but I believe it is important in the future realignment scenarios to be really aware of what VENU SPORTS brings to college football.

-Still pending regulatory approval ... but expected to launch this Fall with a start up package.
-Sports Streaming Service that is a joint venture of Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros Discovery
-Ownership:
ESPN 33.3%
FOX 33.3%
WBD 33.3%
-Venu Sports will offer the combined SPORTS PROGRAMS from the 3 joint venture partners on one streaming service, and will include
recording and split screen capabilities. Believe you will be able to have an SEC and Bog10 game on your screen at the same time.

Was reading in one thread some further commentary regarding the potential new ACC contract that "is supposedly close to being presented" stating:

-ESPN will be financing the exit of select schools.
-Schools might be headed to either SEC or Big 10 ... but ESPN will be broadcasting some Big 10 games as part of the deal.
-The new ACC contract / GOR will have an "escape hatch" that will enable the P2 to move schools FROM the ACC TO the P2
further down the road if so desired.

This new joint venture and joint programming changes the historic "competitive stance" of these sports broadcast companies and turns them into powerful allies. So to a degree ESPN isn't "losing" a valuable property if an ACC school heads to the Big 10, they are moving to another asset that ESPN is involved with.

Huge change in the way we look at the landscape.
Whatever. Cut and paste from fsu.

All of that would be nice if you showed nbc and cbs who are part of the big ten deal that is JUST starting - fox can’t just give things over to espn as if there isn’t a new deal with two other partners in it that are not part of venu. Their own games shown in venu? Yes.

That may be the case, but FSU is a bad cultural fit with the Big Ten. They would be a fish out of water in that league. And AAU membership is still very important to a lot of the school presidents. They were not happy when Nebraska lost membership.
Yes AAU is important and FSU is very close to getting it. Research is a huge consideration and with their latest budget FSU is almost on a par with Miami in the research category. How much of the decision is MEDIA PARTNER driven .... ie ... eyeballs to the TV and how much is "academic profile" related? Nebraska is something like #155 ranked in academics while FSU is now #53 with a budget that is "AAU oriented".

This ain’t your grandpa’s B1G. Sure, AAU is important. But media rights, eyeballs, DOLLARS are what they’re interested in. That’s why FSU has a P2 spot.

Yes, but it is also hard to predict the timing on AAU expansion. Miami's medical research has been strong for decades, while the AAU only took 6 schools since 2001 before this big group of 6 made it in for 2023.

Never forget, Florida made it in THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS before we did.

Every bit of gossip about the B1G has been consistent- AAU membership for any new member is 100% required. This is non negotiable. People who say that the B1G would add a team that isn’t a AAU member just because of ratings are smoking crack. As for how close FSU to AAU accreditation- just last year the AAU added some Florida schools… and chose USF over FSU. This despite FSU desperately wanting AAU status and doing everything it could to get it. It’s not as close as some are trying to claim. And Clemson isn’t remotely close. That’s why if either team goes anywhere, it’s likely the SEC. Our best chance of getting to the dance is pairing up with UNC, another AAU school that the B1G is drooling over. We give them the foothold in Florida they want.

USF has a research budget of over $700 Million which was a major factor in them getting the nod over FSU at the time. FSU is significantly increasing research spending and is getting close to Miami levels of $400M.

Interesting that Big Ten schools "may have" helped Miami and Notre Dame get an AAU invite last summer while the beggars in Tally were getting passed up by USF 🤔

AAU is not impressed.

I don’t think you are appreciating how selective the AAU is. Since 2001, they have only approved admission of 16 schools, and six of those were in 2023 (when UM got in).

It takes 3/4 of the members to vote approval. If B1G has a requirement of being an AAU school, it’s not too farfetched that a small group of schools could block AAU approval, and deny a school a chance at the B1G. Maybe one of those AAU
schools in Florida knows that if it keeps FSU out, it increases the chances that the AAU school would be next on the list for an invite to the B1G.

Hmmmm……

12 schools since 2001. Including an Ivy.

I don't know much about UC-Riverside, but I know about all the other schools.

Interesting that Arizona State — probably no better a school than FSU — was invited to the AAU last summer.

A difference is ASU could someday be a part of further Big Ten expansion plans

also they pronounce it like "venue" not "vee-new" which is what I thought it was initially.

That is incorrect ... there HAVE been commentaries by some that "AAU is not 100% required ... case by case evaluation ... FSU has been vetted and approved by FOX and the Big 10".

The document is an order from the District Court of Appeal, First District of Florida, regarding the case between the Atlantic Coast Conference (Petitioner) and the Florida State University Board of Trustees (Respondent). Here are the key points:

1. **Denial of Stay Motion**: The court denies the Petitioner's motion for stay filed on June 13, 2024.

2. **Response Timeline**: The Respondent is ordered to file a response to the petition for writ of certiorari within twenty days of the order (June 28, 2024). The Petitioner may reply within ten days after the Respondent's filing.

3. **Pro Hac Vice Motions Denied Without Prejudice**: The motions of Sarah Motley Stone, James P. Cooney III, and Patrick Grayson Spaugh to appear pro hac vice (temporarily for this case) on behalf of the Petitioner are denied without prejudice. The denial is due to non-compliance with Florida Rule of General Practice and Judicial Administration 2.510, specifically:
- The motions did not include all assigned bar numbers and attorney numbers for the jurisdictions where the attorneys are active members in good standing.
- The motions did not include the date and disposition of all other motions to appear pro hac vice in Florida within the preceding five years.
