Coach D; One Players Perspective

Every last player on this defense was recruited by Al Golden to play football at Miami.

What has killed coach d imo is the failure to recruit n elite DT, until then we wont kno how good his D can be.
Virginia Tech doesn't need elite DTs to field top defenses. Only Miami.

because, shocker, VT recruits guys for their system that they've had in place for how long? That's exactly what golden and D'Onof are trying to do here... run their system and recruit to it.. once it's implemented they just need to get the pieces that fit, like VT does.

this dude is gone. I imagine this guy posting in his velcro shoes with a onesie pajamas on drooling on his bib

I'm not sure why this should surprise anyone. The worst coach in history had players on his roster who thought he was a decent coach lest they admit to themselves that the guy the signed up to play for was actually totally incompetent. It's a coping mechanism. Just like the child who gets physically abused but still thinks his parents love him because the alternative, in his mind, is worse.

This just isn't the truth. When you're playing for a ****** coach you tell everyone about it. I played for a **** coach my first year of college. Everyone on the team were very outspoken about it. The same thing goes on everywhere.

some were recruited some were desperation schollys...

I have stated where I have been to a few practices...the D is still making mistakes which includes Perryman etc...but they are quicker and seem to be playing as a team.

I really feel if Morris was getting the 1st team reps the D would look much better...williams is doing what other teams do to us...short routes using the TE..we all have seen the highlites..TEs are getting big plays.....

But he is getting pressured a lot more than Stephen ever did at practice the last 2 years...two good things from this...our front 7 is improving and Williams will not be surprised in game one that a defense can actually penetrate....Morris always **** the bed when pressured...Williams and Olsen are seeing this daily now...

Guys we can discuss this all day until we kick off against UL...if Dorioto is that bad ( past says yes) he is doing a great job of hiding it...he is very passionate and works hard out there..so at least he is earning some of his pay.....I will wait until spring game to make any predictions on 2014 numbers by this D...as all of us should...

Without a stud RB the Defense gets a little break but we should see some sacks, takeaways and pressure where Williams and Olsen make mistakes...

Va Tech has had stability in their program and coaches for decades. They haven't changed coaches every five years. Beamer and Foster have been there since 1987. We've gone through six head coaches in the same period.

I've been to clinics where Frank has spoken. Now the funny thing is he stills uses an overhead projector at least he did 5 years ago. Frank really understands field position. He can tell you from any point on the field the odds of scoring a touchdown or field. He does a wonderful job of recruiting kids who fit his system here in Virginia Tech. He'll always have smaller, more athletic kids at tackle who are very quick off the ball. He also takes high schoolers and converts them. The Van Dykes were safeties coming out of South County. They're playing linebacker. Both boys can't stay healthy but they were really excellent high school football players who could run.

If Foster were DC at Miami the last 3 years the defense would have been top 20 and not the siv that it has been. And, Foster would have NEVER had Shayon Green covering a GOD**** Slot Receiver with ZERO Adjustments during a game.

Uh oh. A well-reasoned, rational post.....that means you'll be getting attacked soon.

It's funny though, because when the 2011 class initially signed everyone was praising Golden for the great job he did securing good players in only a couple months.

Eddie Johnson
Kevin Grooms
Gionni Paul
Antonio Kinard
Jalen Grimble
Thomas Finnie
Ricardo Williams

All of these guys were sought after by D1 programs.

Chickillo
Dorsett
Perryman
Pierre
Scott
Dallas
Gadbois

These were all guys that Golden wanted.

The only desperation signings from that year were Ryan Williams, Wells, King, Armbrister, D. Smith.

I'm a big believer that a lack of talent/experience has held us back since 2011. No excuses in 2014.

He wouldn't have had the safeties to run his scheme especially with Bush injured.

I agree. Great 2011 class considering the circumstance.
Eddie Johnson was a heck of a find. To bad he couldn't follow rules and that Golden doesn't bend them for anyone.

These players and coaches (and your son) can go **** their own faces until we stop routinely allowing 500 yards against teams like Pitt and UVA. Only then will they all be crossed off the official list of ****boys.

First; its a data point. its factual information that sheds some light on how the players might or might not be thinking. Its worth considering when you reflect on how the team might or might not perform.

Second; I agree that its not particularly surprising. It would be hard (even dangerous) for a kid to say something otherwise. However, if they felt otherwise they wouldnt say anything at all. They would bite their tongue. Ultimately, I would rather the message my kid relayed be the tone of the day vs. doubt and resentment as that would bode even worse for the coming year. Point being if the players felt as bad as some posters do about Coach D then you wouldnt hear any support.

Third; These are elite, albeit impressionable kids, who had choices to go to other schools. They presumably help in recruiting other talent. They are used to winning. I want them praising the coach not *****ing about him. Thats how you attract new talent.

Fourth: "These players and coaches (and your son) can go **** their own faces"Not sure what to make of that comment. These kids, coaches and my kid want to see the U win more than anyone. I KNOW they arent happy with results on the field. I will leave my personal opinion out when I reflect on that comment but my bet is you wouldnt make that comment directly to the player my kid was talking to, or my son for that matter.

I don't necessarily agree that what your son told you is factual. We've heard plenty of second-hand accounts that paint a completely different picture. I do agree that it's better for everyone involved that the tenor within the program be one of positivity.

And as far as saying these things to you, your son's, and the player in question's face, I have just one thing to say:

Meet me somewhere

Rok...I have heard players past and present that play for this Dorito..and they all say its on them or players...

has one player past or present said different?

I have heard of ex players that are no where near this team ***** and go off??

Not defending coach D...he has shown me ( us ) nothing on Game day Nothing..

We should've never fired Randy then, as there is now no timeline on acquiring "pieces."

Guys like Zook and Dooley just should've told their ADs that they needed their pieces, and uh, they'll get here when they get here.

What was Randy's track record as an HC turning around other programs?

the same as our HC......None of them ever won their conference. Turning around Temple, gtfoh..they went down to the mid majors and still couldnt win that conference, they had more money than any other school in the conference.

The Temple angle has completely gotten played out, it's like over valuing a good win. Kinda like beating OU in 07, OSU in 11, and UF last year. All accomplishments and note worthy, but lets not act like we beat them at their very best. Golden did an admirable job at Temple but lets not get carried away here. Like you stated for all the credit some give him, he never won the conference. It's just like people continue to bring up M Wilkerson to showcase his talent evals, but in the meantime not one camp offer/signee has even really sniffed anything of substance.......

Meet me somewhere

I get it.

I even said in my first note you can argue its sketchy since I left names out. (I figure if every time a kid on the team tells a classmate something and it ends up on a message board that’s not a good thing). I was just reporting what my kid had to say. Its fair to say he has a particular slant in that he is at the U, loves the team and wants to be on campus AND watch a winner. (i have asked the kid to inquire what players think about Coach D)

There probably are kids who feel otherwise, it’s a big team. I just didn’t hear any of that side and if I did I would have tapped that out too.

Lastly, maybe I wasn’t clear, I wasn’t so much challenging if you would say that to a kid on a team (that you root for) or his classmate. I was questioning whether that was appropriate to do so. I just think many forget these are just kids. When I am on campus and I see players it reminds me that is what they are….Kids.

That was my point. #canesfam
