Coach D; One Players Perspective

They are a team--they are supposed to support each other. If the players like him then they should play harder for him. Caution, you show a class full of slow learning 5th graders a simultaneous equation and how to solve it, they WILL be excited(well, as excited as anyone can get over a math problem), but that does not mean they will be able to solve it. Personally, I prefer our players be so scared of the DC that they pea their pans thinking about making a mistake.

My kid is at the U. He is a sports fan, journalism type focus and knows a few kids on the team,

He knows a starter on D. He called today and told me this player was very supportive of coach D and reported that was the attitude of the team. Player's opinion, my kid reports, was that plays were well conceived and called but not executed. Full confidence in Coach.

I know this is sketchy without names. I know the "F@ck Manny, Fire Dorito" crowd will hate to hear this.

I also know that's what the kid heard and he is a lot closer to the program than most posters.

Go Canes

Not surprising at all, despite all of the mopery and arm-chair coaching going on. While I do criticize D'Onofrio for stubbornly sticking with the scheme he wants to run BEFORE he had the athletes, depth, and experience for it to be run properly (and he definitely deserves criticism for that), once the players are willing and able to execute it properly, there is nothing wrong with it. If he wants to run this scheme, he should have used it occasionally, and increasingly until he had the personnel to actually run it as the primary defense.

How cute.

I don't give a **** if every day after practice they hold a party for Donofrio and hoist him up on a chair while showering him with champagne and cheers. Until they crack the top 25 defenses in the country, they can take their giant, *** reach-around fest and -- literally this time -- go **** themselves.

Wow, telling the players and team to "go **** themselves". Great fan. I'm sure the players, and rightfully so, would tell you to "go find another team to root for...and go **** yourself."

They'd probably just apologize to me and let me throw for 300 yards.

These players and coaches (and your son) can go **** their own faces until we stop routinely allowing 500 yards against teams like Pitt and UVA. Only then will they all be crossed off the official list of ****boys.

What has killed coach d imo is the failure to recruit n elite DT, until then we wont kno how good his D can be.
Virginia Tech doesn't need elite DTs to field top defenses. Only Miami.

because, shocker, VT recruits guys for their system that they've had in place for how long? That's exactly what golden and D'Onof are trying to do here... run their system and recruit to it.. once it's implemented they just need to get the pieces that fit, like VT does.

The pieces are now in place. And if they're not in place by now then they likely never will be.

I think a lot of the pieces are there, and per our recruiting, if the pieces aren't in place by now, we can recruit them... we can't just "buy" pieces like the NFL, you have to identify, recruit (get them to sign), and develop them. If the juco guys pan out at DT then we'll be a lot closer to having the right pieces in place.

We should've never fired Randy then, as there is now no timeline on acquiring "pieces."

Guys like Zook and Dooley just should've told their ADs that they needed their pieces, and uh, they'll get here when they get here.

Because it's never black and white like that. Coach D just isn't an innovator and it's frustrating, he has what he works with and tries to make it work. Look no further than the Wake game, he has his system and that's it. Last year was a perfect example of how good Foster really is, he had a depleted defense but he worked around his personnel, amd made it work. Our guy just hasn't done that.....

What was Randy's track record as an HC turning around other programs?

What system are you talking about? Bud Foster hasn't had a concrete "system" in at least a few years. When he saw the evolution of spread offenses he realized he had to adjust his defense more frequently and cut back on the creative blitz packages. Look at the way he used Kyle Fuller as a whip LB against GT as an example of how Foster adjusts his scheme based on the opponent. Foster is the polar opposite of dinosaur D'Onofrio.

Almost forgot...negged.

I'm not sure why this should surprise anyone. The worst coach in history had players on his roster who thought he was a decent coach lest they admit to themselves that the guy the signed up to play for was actually totally incompetent. It's a coping mechanism. Just like the child who gets physically abused but still thinks his parents love him because the alternative, in his mind, is worse.

Yep, this is akin to the abused spouse blaming herself for getting abused by her husband.

You drill enough into these kids' heads that they're executing a sh1tty scheme terribly, they'll eventually believe it.

This is not inside info or nothing new - if his scheme is so good, why is it that our kids' fail to execute it year after year after year? At some point you have to look at yourself in the mirror and acknowledge that either it's a sh1tty scheme or you're just not a good teachher.

If you call something your players can't execute, how is it well concieved?

To me, results matter, not intentions. You could intend to schematically outcoach your opponent, but, if the players you help recruit to play in your system fail, you fail.

Almost all the players in that defense were not recruited by AG and Dorito. Who? Tracy and Bush? Who else? AQM? Chick? These are the good players. The rest were here before AG. I'm not a big fan of the scheme, but I still think our talent is mediocre outside of maybe five players.

So if non-AG players were mediocre, what does that make the AG players that were playing behind these supposed mediocre players? More mediocre? AG hasn't found a way to supplant very many mediocre Shannon players in 3+_ years.

Wait until those players get thrown under the bus by Dorito in a 600 yard post loss presser. Then take that poll again.

Va Tech has had stability in their program and coaches for decades. They haven't changed coaches every five years. Beamer and Foster have been there since 1987. We've gone through six head coaches in the same period.
