Yeah not too impressed. Technique looks fine but he's getting beat off the line too often for my taste. Shows some decent makeup speed but can he do that vs ACC receivers. He looks like he'd be abused by good slot guys. He won't see the field next year and hopefully Chevis & the strength staff can get something out of him but I'm not counting on it.

Footage of Ewald from earlier in the season against St. John Bosco. He's #8 on Chaminade's defense.

- Ewald's effort on the 3rd & 4 at the 4:03 mark was interesting.
- Defends a comeback route at the 5:34 mark.
- Long run for St. John Bosco at the 9:03 mark shows Ewald trying to chase down their running back in the open field.

Looks like he has no clue how to play the ball in the air unless the play is in front of him. Better in off coverage or zone. Gets lost in man.

I will say, at this time last year I had about the same overall feelings towards OJ and I'm no DB guru. I don't think Ewald is very good and I think ultimately what OJ had at this stage that Ewald doesn't is the ball skills and probably some more athleticism.

I know nothing about him personally, but having the dog mentality and being an alpha competitor (like OJ) is probably the only way the kid can come in and surprise me.

We need Hanks and/or Pickett if we actually want to salvage this DB class. I see Pickett as more of a Safety. I used to be all in on him at corner but I just don't see the fluidity.

Oh, and better hold onto Antoine. That kid is a dog and could be day 1 contributor if his injury isn't bad.

I was going to say the same thing in comparisons to oj. I was pretty down on him from the few televised games I watched. Saw him get bodied on a contested ball and then take a play off after that. The only one I’m unsure of in terms of position is Fitzgerald.

I was way off so I’m not judging db recruiting until they get on campus.

Fitzgerald should come in and play CB.

But I'm not on the staff. The staff hasn't proven 1 thing related to DBs so confidence for me is low.

I don't get the "salvage" comments at all

Stubbs and Antoine are literally two of the best DB in the country.

Part of what separates Frédérique and Ewald is that, if I remember correctly, OJ was a late bloomer who had a growth spurt whereas Ewald has been more on the national radar as a recruit for a much longer period of time.

Frédérique’s speed and athleticism weren't really questioned, but he was considered by many to be a developmental project and a likely redshirt candidate. With the benefit of hindsight based on how he has played, concerns about him being raw were clearly overstated.

The biggest knocks on Ewald seem to be ball skills, athleticism, speed, and ceiling. And the biggest question I have is whether he represents the type of corner multiple regimes have prioritized, including via the portal, which is why our secondary is in such desperate need of revamping.

I said when he committed that regardless of my opinion of his ranking, no one would really object if Ewald were to end up as the CB4 in our class. Hopefully we finish strong, flip our premier targets at corner, and somehow hang onto Merritt.

If Ewald is at the top of your corner class, it's a disappointment. Not enough athleticism. If he's lower in the ladder, he should be OK. He has length and knows how to play. We need as many corners as we can get.

We all know this but do the important people inside the program recognize this also? I mean you’d have to be a moron to not recognize it but I’ve also lived through the last 20 years.

This is as close as it gets to a D$ disapproval. I'm not looking for names, but could we see some surprises still, or is the board the board?
