Canes #11/13 (Coach/AP) - 2.20.23

What I noticed about our Defense is that we actually play well when we trap & pick up at 94ft.

Where we find ourselves in trouble on a game to game basis is we let one guy get hot & takes until they’ve scored like 15+ points in a row until we send Ben Joseph or H-Bev at’em lol, but when we decide to intensify on-ball pressure we usually do a pretty good job in forcing bad shots & turnovers.

We also don’t have a traditional rim protector, Omier does as good of a job he can do while not being a traditional Big, but considering we’re not a really big team overall it’s just something we’ll have to work around throughout the season.
Your last point is the best point as to UM’s defensive issue; no rim protector. We have some good perimeter defenders in Miller, Joseph and Wong, but everyone is beat sometimes and without a ruin protector, when we are beat its a layup. Our size hurt us against Maryland and will likely hurt us a handful of times in ACC play. But come tournament time our speed and guard play should help us overcome the lack of size. We can also hope 1-2 of the taller freshmen work themselves into the rotation and can help us in the 2nd half of the season.

And this is why the voters CONTINUE to be crap.

There are 60 voters. You get 1 point for a vote at #25, you get 25 points for vote at #1.

Even though we just beat UVa, ON AVERAGE, every single one of the voters is voting UVa higher than Miami by 3 to 4 positions.

Ridiculous. And don't feed me some line of bullcrap, the season is nearly half over. These votes aren't legally binding, they can always change it up next week if they get more data and Miami drops a game or UVa starts to look amazing again.

#14 is great for now, no hate at UVA being 1 spot higher, shows the respect voters have for the Hoos & Bennett.

Canes are in a great position for it not even being January, now go stomp the Golden Domers in South Bend.

I’ve got no issue with UVA remaining a top 15 team, it does nothing but make our resume look good come selection time.

All we have to do is continue to win & not have too many bad losses as we get into the 2nd half of the bulk of the ACC schedule & the rest will take care of itself. We don’t have to scrape & struggle to get respect or favorable seeding, we’re proving we’re a legitimate contender & even without having a pristine record by the end of the season we’ll be in position to make a deep tourney run.

I think we’ve gotten over the hump of being worried about being a fringe low seeded last 4 in type team; as long as we handle our business & get to the ACC Title game we’ll be a top 4 seed in whatever bracket we get placed in.

Virginia beats Baylor on a neutral court and has the same record as Baylor (and Virginia’s losses are both better than Baylor’s loss to Marquette).

Baylor ranked higher than Virginia.

Miami beats Virginia AND has a better record than Virginia.

Virginia ranked higher.

Pollsters are irrational and highly biased. The influence of efficiency rankings that totally disregard actual wins and losses is a big problem as well.

Yes I did. And while I acknowledge that "end-of-year" matters the most, in order to build resume, and build SOS and SOR, we need teams (including ourselves) to be ranked and rated correctly.

Per the 32 coaches (COACHES!) who voted, they consistently (on average) votes us SIX spots lower than UVa....

Fvck off.

The writers CONSISTENTLY voted us 3 or 4 spots lower than UVa. The coaches CONSISTENTLY voted us 6 spots lower than UVa.

It's bullcrap, and you pollyannas are going to continue to talk about the next game and the next month.

Why, lord, do we have so many pvssy fans?

Exactly. Not to mention how much the pre-season poll incorrectly establishes the assumptions that continue to dominate, even halfway through the season. I've been talking about this since watching it all play out in 1983, when Miami opened the season unranked and had to fight to get to #5, before winning the national championship (and we would have never even had the chance to PLAY FOR the national championship if the current "top 4" system existed back then).

No polls until AT LEAST one-quarter or one-third of football and basketball seasons have been played. It makes so much sense, but we're still going to have a bunch of apologists telling us to wait until March for some respect and equity...

Very true.

Still, I don't have much of a problem with where we're ranked. IMO, we'd have a fighting chance against any of 13 teams ahead of us. By the same token, any of the 11 teams behind us in the Top 25 could beat us on a given night, not to mention some very good, unranked ones as well. The beauty of college hoops!

Let’s not get carried away yet. We have a very nice team but will have to rely on some freshman at a very key position. The teams ahead of us generally are strong but some of them have not played close to enough games either so being at #15 sets us up with a win at FSU to be fringe top 10.

I guess all ratings systems, including both analytics and human pollsters, suck. Well except for AmherstCane's own ratings, those are flawless.

BTW, there are rating systems that look ONLY at wins and losses, too. But God forbid you try to inform yourself. You're better off complaining about something on the internet than trying to understand and contextualize it.

I cannot believe it took me until today to mute this meat head lol

While I don’t want or expect a late season collapse we want to be ranked as high for as long as possible because if we lose 2-3 late and early in the ACC it can be viewed as a hiccup.

If you are 15th in country and lose 2-3 and lose early in the Acc it’s viewed as “we told you so” and we get an awful seed.

So hopefully we rip off a few more W’s and if we get to about 17-3 we are a top 6-8 team.
