As if you needed more news today...

Im to lazy to read all 16 pages (so forgive me if this was already posted) but I saw that Manny Navarro posted this on the Miami Herald:

Florida State offensive coordinator James Coley could be on the verge of turning in the garnet and gold for green and orange.

Multiple sources close to Coley told The Miami Herald on Wednesday afternoon that the 39-year-old Miami High and FSU graduate has been in discussions with University of Miami coach Al Golden to fill the Hurricanes’ vacant play-calling position. Coley has told several people close to him he has been offered the job and is now weighing whether to accept it.

Coley, who makes $390,000 to prepare the game plans for the Seminoles before head coach Jimbo Fisher calls the plays on game days, was offered $500,000 to become UM’s next offensive coordinator, a source said. The source said that although FSU matched the offer, Fisher told Coley he is not going to give up his play-calling duties.

Coley was offered the offensive coordinator position at Kentucky in December but turned it down. He has been looking to get the opportunity to call plays on game days.

Former UM offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch left the team over the weekend for the same position with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Coley called plays for FIU in Mario Cristobal’s first season as coach in 2007 and then moved to FSU, where he has worked as the tight ends coach, recruiting coordinator and most recently the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Coley has always had strong recruiting ties to South Florida throughout his career, and his addition to UM’s staff would be a boon two weeks before National Signing Day.

At Miami High from 1998 to 2000, Coley coached future NFL players in Roscoe Parrish and Andre Johnson. He then served as the offensive coordinator at Miami Norland when Dwyane Bowe and the Vikings won a state title in 2002. He was then a grad assistant at LSU under Nick Saban for two years before moving on to the Dolphins with him for two more years.

At FIU, the Golden Panthers finished just 1-11, but the team was coming off an 0-12 season and was in the process of rebuilding when Coley left to join the Seminoles.

Is that directly pulled from message boards or does Manny know the exact FSU source saying the same things to others. Interesting.

No idea. So take it with a grain of salt but I did find it interesting that it was put out there by the Herald. He does say in the article that multiple sources close to Coley told the Miami Herald; but for all I know the sources were some old guy outside of the Versailles window and guys from the WEZ. I also do find it interesting that we are willing to pay him $500K when in the past we refused to pay ****. Also this could be a troll by Coley as some other posters have said to get more money from FSU.

I dont know how true the 500k rumor is. I just dont think coley or miami would release that info. I do believe he was offered but the fact the herald is using the 500k source tells me thwy are using twitter and other sources that may not be reporting to them directly.

Well if i FSU says/leaks they matched the Miami offer and FSU leaks the amount they offered to a source; then we can assume the offer is $500K from Miami

Valid point. Didnt think of fsu leaking it. :fistbump:

Im all in on coley. I wasnt yesterday but the recruuting would be boosted and honestly I dont think anyone knows if he would be bad as a play caller or not.

If Golden wanted the guy and made the offer, it's a win-win. Either he takes the job at UM (which Al wants), or Al just forced the Noles to pay a guy they DON'T want calling plays $500,000.

DMoney, what's your take on Coley? How similar do you think his offense would look compared to Fisch?

Two things tell me a lot:

1) Cristobal vouches for him
2) Saban took him from LSU to the pros. There's no recruiting in the AFC East. It's about intelligence and work ethic.

Didnt saban have the most coaches ever on that staff? He basically took everybody he could find, lol...

YES!

a.) I trust Golden on this
b.) Cristobal knows more about him as a OC and playcaller than pretty much anyone else in the nation
c.) Saban chose to bring him from being a LSU grad. assistant up to an assistant coach in the NFL (it wasn't for recruiting purposes)
d.) Apparently he was pursued by Belichick to be a WR coach in the past
e.) Apparently he is being pursued to be a position coach in the NFL currently
f.) Stoops wanted him as his OC when he left to coach at Kentucky

Those are a lot of things that really assuage my concerns

I was about to aks about Cristobal. He has to know more than most on Coley and has to be in Goldens ear about him if we are going after him. Makes me more comfortable knowing there are people who have worked with him on the staff already that can give their input on Coley and their exprience working with him.

As I told D$ over the phone, what worries me about #2 is that Saban was a cluster**** in the pros. Despite a mediocre record (he was slightly below .500), he's openly admitted that he didn't deal well with the "parity" of the pro game. Why? Because that's when you need tactical advantages in order to compete and he felt a bit hamstrung by it all. Additionally, it's not like he has a fantastic eye for offensive coaching talent anyway or that Coley has been a noted strategist anywhere. All in all, despite D$'s logical #2 observation, I think Coley is still a significant unknown.

That's pretty funny. Al not just closing recruits, but pooping on rival coaching staffs. I like this theory.

Saban didn't fail in the pros due to tactical failures. He had the most robust and expensive staff in the NFL. It was often reported he had 23 coaches and this didn't include the quality control guys he had. Jim Mandich, Joe Rose and Kim Bokamper used to joke that he had a coach for every starting player.

From a Nole friend of mine. TIFWIW....

I actually think Coley can flat out coach. From what I hear, he should be calling plays (and very well may be next year).

I heard he had the winning gameplan for the Florida game, but 'ole over conservative vetoed it. Coley's plan was to run a HUNH to expose Florida's lack of depth on defense. I still believe that would have been a winning recipe.

Coley could be a really good one.

Yep. We wouldve beat them had we done this. Never heard that one before
